I had the day off yesterday--long weekend! Went for 3 laps around stanley park. It was a few digits above freezing, but sunny, and there was a photographer taking pictures of a bikini model in front of a lamborghini... only in Canada(?)

Today's AM commute was frosty but dry.

Hello all, this is my first post! I started commuting to work this August and have enjoyed getting to be part of my environment rather than moving through it in a car. I commute on an old mtb and I'm lucky to hit 20 mph going down hill. Today is now my personal record, cold ride. My commute is only 2.5 mi, but temp was 11 F with a wind chill which made it feel like -7 according to my NOAA app. I was doing fine with the cold except for my hands which started numbing up and aching about 3/4ths of the way. By the time I got to work and tried to thaw I was in a bit of pain. 10 minutes later I ordered some Bar Mits, I look forward to trying them out. I'm feeling a little guilty about how much $$ I have been throwing down to make this lifestyle change but hopefully after this season I will be all set.

Two broken spokes, waiting for the disc brake rotor centerlock removal tool to arrive so that I can replace them proper. :bike2:

It was a nice 60F and with light winds but heavy traffic. I volunteer at Good Karma bicycles in San Jose,CA.

joeyduck 11-18-14 09:11 PM

No buzzer tonight, I was a few minutes early though. But I did get a flash, honk and rev. I only got a partial plate but I think I know where the car spends its days.

It was a nice ride otherwise. Nice remnants of the sunset in the clouds.

It was cold! Good lordy was it motherfreaking COLD! When I left dinner with a friend at around 10:30 it was 21°F with a windchill of 15°. I had to break out my balaclava and heavy gloves.

hardboiled718 11-19-14 05:04 AM

^ Wow I'm glad it hasn't gotten that cold where I am yet. Hovering around mid 30's, low 40's. Still wearing shorts and I'm gunna try to keep wearing them as long as I can.

Saw some cars that got into a fender bender on my commute home today. Not sure how many times I've seen this but it's a constant reminder to be careful out there.

Welcome!

Your commute is a short one like mine, I am roughly 4 miles one way but on a day like today it feels like 10 miles.

22F/-6C thankfully no wind. Lot's of runners out which totally surprised me.

Coldest commute since last January and coldest ever in November, with record-breaking low of 19 F. It had warmed up to a balmy 22 by the time I left for work, so I had no trouble staying warm. It was nowhere near my coldest ever commute, which was about 15 F, and my water bottle didn't even freeze solid. I was tempted to drive today until I remembered we are having our Thanksgiving feast at work, so I figured that I better ride to burn some calories.

mgw4jc 11-19-14 07:49 AM

Record lows in Charlotte too. 14F at 6am at the airport. I think it was around 18/20 when I left for work. My toes were really the only thing that suffered.

I saw gaggle of geese chillin' in the morning sunshine and eating leftover corn in a harvested field. And I wish I could figre out a way to get a picture of my shadow. I think it looks cool when the sun is low and casts a near perfect silhoutte of a biker on the grass beside the road.

It started out at 18° but quickly warmed up. Having something to block the wind helped. I decided to wrap the fairing with some spandex material to smooth out some of the lines. I'm fairly pleased at how it turned out:

Finally back at it, first commute since last Tuesday. After super cold weather for November, the winds have shifted south, and it was actually warmer this morning than it was about 10 pm last night. Unfortunately that also meant I had a fairly strong headwind to deal with this morning. About 33°F when I left the house, and unfortunately it turned into one of my slowest commutes ever. This afternoon should be fun, though. Anything will be better than last Tuesday evening when my light was nearly dead and I didn't have my long gloves.

arsprod 11-19-14 09:20 AM

20F, 7F with the windchill all of which was in my face. As much as I want to whine about our weather at least I'm not in Buffalo!

Hyperbole 11-19-14 09:46 AM

Cold and hostile

Last evening on my commute home after I reminded a honking maniac that I was riding in the bike share lane and not in his lane, I was threatened with being punched in the face by the most stereotypical Brooklynite you can imagine. When I laughed at him he then tried to run me off the road/into the curb while threatening to "run over my ass". So far my most hostile road rage encounter on my bike or maybe ever.

Then both of my hands went numb due to the cold. I could barely use my keys to open my door.

dramiscram 11-19-14 09:59 AM

No commute this morning, no commute tommorow either, one of my daugthers is going thru a serie of medical tests for a digestive problem so we'll be spending a few morning in the hospital in the next weeks. I missed the bike ride but as I love the kid a lot more than the bike ride...

spivonious 11-19-14 11:29 AM

Another cold ride in this morning (about 20F). At least the wind has died down. Only 10-15mph today versus 25-30mph yesterday.

It's supposed to be downright balmy this afternoon, with a high forecast of 32F.

To those with cold hands - get some gloves! Frostbite is serious business.

joeyduck 11-19-14 11:38 AM

I feel bad for those of you suffering the cold right now. I miss it dreadfully. We are above freezing (about 40-50°F today) and expecting rain.

I was so out of last night. I feel asleep on the couch and my wife told me to come to bed, I opened my eyes and responded. I have no recollection. My son woke up crying and screaming for me at 3. I did not hear him, nor do I recall coming into his room and sleeping with him. Come time to get up I thought it was the weekend.

The commute was fine this morning, once I got everything figured out. I was even early!

The car that honked me last night was not the one I thought it was, which disappointed me a bit. I wanted to go talk to the guys boss and explain his employee's behavior.

I have seen several people with inadequate rear lights and I have been letting them know they are nearly invisible from the rear. I also called some guy with three strobes dance party last night.

taverre 11-19-14 12:44 PM

So far so good this morning although I'm anxiously awaiting my bar mits. Still in the teens degree wise with I think 18 this morning. I'm still a little nervous on the ice but hesitant to pull the trigger on MORE cold weather bike "essentials" such as studded tires. I may try making a front wheel with studs and see how that goes.

timvan_78 11-19-14 05:11 PM

I left at least 15 mins late (organizing all my blinky lights), so I had to haul ass to make it on time.
Hauling ass + warmer today = super hot by the time I got to work.

Sending positive vibes your daughter's way!

Todzilla 11-20-14 06:54 AM

Commute was very cold by North Carolina standards. A bit below freezing at 7:00 a.m., but I am determined to commute at least once a week in winter months.

I was perfectly warm except my toes which are like oversized frozen tater tots. Really don't want to have to get special shoes for winter biking, since our winter is about two and a half months, typically.

Damn kids, don't they know we have important things to do like ride bikes?! Best of luck - nothing's worse than a sick kid.

Ride home last night just sucked - mid 30's with winds gusting to 30mph. While standing still at one downtown intersection I thought I as going over for sure. No ride today because of work commitment - I can honestly say I'm glad, I need a break

mgw4jc 11-20-14 07:21 AM

About 36F for the ride in this morning. Big change from yesterday's 18. Gonna be in the 50s for the ride home. That will feel hot.

Good ride. One guy passed too closely this morning. I think he didn't see me in time because he was tailgating. The car in front of him passed safely, but because he was following too close, he probably couldn't see me until he was right there and then just barely made it by.

dramiscram 11-20-14 08:36 AM

My wife was home early (she works on the night shift) so she went with our daughter for the morning test so I was able to ride the bike to work.

traces of snow on the ground , big tailwind. Tonight will be another hard ride with projected 50-60 kmh headwind and snow flurry. Fortunately there's a hockey game tonight on the radio for me top listen on my way home.

KCBikeCommuter 11-20-14 08:42 AM

Still plenty cold on the commute this morning. 19F (-7C), but at least the winds were light. I was warm enough except for my hands. I probably need to invest in a set of ski mittens, because my ski gloves just aren't cutting it. It's a 19.5-mile ride, and I know I'm in trouble when my fingers start getting cold within the first 5-miles. So I'll pull my hand into a ball inside my gloves to warm them up, which really does help... but I'm hoping the entire time I don't need to hit the brakes quickly. Should be above freezing for the ride home, which should be nice.
