79/69 :)

I was forced to spend some time outside today... mostly just standing around. I thought that with all to sub-zero crap we've had around here that 17 degrees would seem warm.

I was mistaken.

However it is supposed to get above freezing soon.... and I am committed to riding!

I guess it's not a good time to tell you guys that I live in Hawaii?

Send me a plate lunch or three and I will not be angry or jealous. :)

Ok. Teriyaki chicken or beef?

I never used any sunblock on commute rides in the summer. Even at just over an hour ride home I never did burn, just got some nice cyclist tan lines. :p

I definitely do use it on longer rides, and absolutely on most every ride I did while in Destin last August.

One more good thing about winter commute: headlight will not overheat :D

^^^

No bugs too.

Very true, oh and the reefer groceries you throw in your backpack stay nice and cold that last 15 miles home.

acdronin 02-01-14 02:17 AM

Can I ***** about the 32* wind chill riding at night in the Bay Area or is that just too goddamn cheeky for a newb?

That one always seems to surprise me every spring.

Plz do not use the words like "cold" or "winter" with places like Hawaii or FL.

It's all relative. To someone who lives where it rarely drops below 59° (15C), near freezing temps feel cold indeed. Also remember that in tropical and sub tropical homes rarely have central heat, and people may not own coats, boots or any winter clothing.

If you follow the news, it's not Alberta, Minnesota, or New York where pipes are freezing and bursting, it's places like Houston, where building codes don't factor sub freezing conditions.

That looked like a scene from "The Walking Dead"!

How bout 20 degrees with four inches of snow on the ground? Wanna change places?

byrd48 02-01-14 11:57 PM

Two things you may consider, even though you might only use them a couple times per year: pogies for the handlebars (presuming you have flat bars, not drops) and shoe covers (I've heard good things about the Pearl Izumi Barriers).

acdronin 02-02-14 12:17 AM

Don't do snow, ok, you win:D

The FL panhandle (Destin, Panama City etc.) was having freezing rain and sleet last week. That is just totally wrong.

Like most everyone else, I'm sick of this. Compared to last year, I'm 6 days behind on my bike commuting days.

However, now I'm REALLY sick of it. My new Trek Crossrip LTD has arrived at the LBS! We struck a deal on a tire upgrade and are now waiting on those to arrive. Yesterday left us with 5+ inches of snow with a skim of sleet to finish it off. Tomorrow is supposed to bring a 1/4" of ice with more snow on Fri. & the weekend. Enough already!

PatrickGSR94 02-03-14 10:03 AM

We had a super nice day in the 60's on Saturday, but I didn't get to ride at all with all the other stuff I had going on. Then yesterday was rain and freezing rain in the area, temps in the 20's and 30's all this week.

I swear I cannot get a break on the weather timing.

awesome i was looking at that bike this past saturday while at the bike shop with my son. I was dropping off my commuter for some winter TLC

irwin7638 02-03-14 06:08 PM

I'm trying to be patient. I've lived in the Midwest all but 4 or 5 years of my life and have never seen anything like this past January: 48" of snow and two separate weeks with wind chills approaching -35. I still managed to get out most days, and I am not thinking of an indoor trainer, perhaps some Nokian Extreme tires, but not an indoor trainer. For once February may seem to be a relief.

Well it's not as cold as it's been but we got a fair bit of snow again. I'm hoping that the temperature goes above freezing tomorrow and it all begins to melt by Wednesday.

Not quite, more coming Wednesday. Then again (maybe) this weekend. New York is a winter wonderland
