broken sks fender
My rear fender broke the other day while out on a ride. I was hearing noises but could not see any problems( did not look to hard, either). When I stopped at the store, and was putting the lock on my bike I noticed the rear fender was in two separate pieces. I do not think that is the way it was made. Anyway, I am either needing new fenders or having that one repaired in some way. It broke at the piece that attaches to the back of the seat post. Has any one had one break and then repair it? If so did that work? The fender is a very long one with a rubber piece attached at the end. The fender was also two years old , but I do not think that should be an issue.

broken sks fender
Maybe you bashed it without noticing. Always good to stop as soon as you hear any unusual sound...

What model and size?
I'm replacing my P35s and P45 with the longboard versions. Since I roll my bikes through the apartment and the back room at work standing on their back wheels, I haven't used the longboards on the back, so I have no use for them. PM me if interested. |
What type of SKS fender is it. Is it one of those with stays that attach it in several points or a "quick release" type that just mounts in a one or two places leaving the rest of it flapping in the wind to vibrate and break off where it's mounted??
|
It is not a quick release type it is thin wire rods that run from the fender to a screw that attaches in the same place as the rear rack.

It broke at the piece that attaches to the back of the seat post. Attached just to the seat post ? .. I suggest from that description .. it's not one of their Full fenders , just buy a new one. I have SKS. full. thermoplast* mudguards that are 30 years old .. Not able to supervise the job, maybe Hot melt glue? the stuff* is a thermoplastic tube with a foil core |
My chromoplast, normally SKS, fenders get glued multiple times and end up being used in practice as raw material. Currently I glue them with quality epoxy but urethane glue (such as Gorilla) worked for me fine as well. You need to overlap the material and contain the glue with tape. The epoxy sold at hardware stores is of mixed quality and as a minimum avoid those 5-minute epoxies. I glue the material to get fenders of any length I want and, when needed, I deform it using a heat gun.
|
If they broke right above the little metal tab, I'd suggest you drill a couple of small holes above the break and run a zip tie through them, then around the seatpost, and call it done.

OK nomenclature fumble ..
they're talking about the Struts .. and breaking on either side of the arch bracket that the struts bolt to .. |
when my plastic fender exploded overnight in the garage, I epoxied (jb weld) a piece of aluminum sheet metal underneath. It's still holding better than new with an extra dose of ugliness. I have a set of berthoud hanging on the wall, but I haven't talked myself into installing them on this particular bike.

Thank-you for your help, I will repair them this weekend using this information. I appreciate your help!!

I had a Planet Bike Cascadia fender break at the mounting bracket. I sent them an email with a photo of the broken fender, and they promptly shipped me a new one at no cost. My broken fender was less than a year old, however.
