Hauling A Big Load Home
 

Near the end of the day, I meet with a customer (A national known chocolate company.) and as I was about to leave they gave me "a sample". I was expecting a Chocolate bar but instead they handed me a large box filled with, you guessed it, Chocolate. Not until I got back to the office did I notice how heavy this box is. (30LBS.!!!) No way was I going to leave it behind so I strapped to my rear rack and off I went. I know, I know. Too much weight on top of a rear rack but it's chocolate. My question is this, what would you do?

The answer is obvious.. you eat as much as you can stuff down your gullet and use it as rocket fuel to get the rest home ;)

My rear rack can hold about 125 lbs (typical for Dutch bikes) so 30 wouldn't have been an issue.

my cheap $20 nashbar rack is rated for 50 lbs. I don't see the problem

Actually hell my seatpost beam rack is rated up to 25lbs.. can't really imagine an actual installed rack having trouble with 30.

My wife would kill me if I didn't.

Photos or it didn't happen! I wouldn't know what 30 lbs of chocolate looks like.

It wasn't solid chocolate. It was 30 LBS. of milk chocolate with centers. (Raisins etc.) Yes, they were very good.

You made it home without incedent? You did the right thing!

If I didn't have a rack to carry it home, I would have duct tape the box to my back or sent it home by cab if I couldn't access any duct tape. I love chocolate and 30 pounds, sounds like a gift that I could live with.

I would kill myself if I left that behind, but one of my racks is good for 50, the other 60+. Granted, the handling is not stellar at that load (esp. on my SS), buuuut... bring the chocolate home! :)

Could you have hidden some in the office and brought some home?

I strap the propane tank for my gas grill on the rack when I need to refill it so I don't see the problem. The fact that it is chocolate just makes it better. :thumb:

No problem, I have carried 21kg/46 lb dog food bags on my rear rack many times, and I always carry some bungees just in case.
Above that weight, I'd probably leave it at a secure place and go bring my trailer.

I would also suggest to use tie down straps instead of bungee cords for securing heavier loads. They are more secure. I carry a couple straps with me most of the time just in case.

Nope. The fridge is stuffed with all the Chocolate. (Like that's a bad thing. LOL) If anyone wants to become my virtual friend, please let me know and I can send them all the virtual chocolate they can store on their computer's hard drive. Actually, it's slowly being given out to friends and acquaintances as I speak. One can't have enough friends when one talks about chocolate, right?

I could only agree if you were the "Healdsburg Kid" then I could get that thar chocolate ;)
