Snow melting, can spring be far behind?
For everybody who got hammered in the northeast last night, here's some hope from the south. We had 2-6" of snow Wednesday night, then it got up into the 40s yesterday. Bike commute was pretty good this morning, except for a few minor issues. Some of the snowmelt refroze last night, so there were a few icy spots. And some of the roads were plowed 6-12" past the fog line, which meant there were snow blocks on the shoulder where any leftover snow on the road had melted.
Daffodils survived the cold snap, but it'll still be a few weeks before they bloom.

Here in MN we might see 40 early next week. I'm not super excited though since the slightly warmer weather usually just brings more snow followed by more cold weather. I'll get excited when the trees start to get buds (April-May).

Winter is long enough here that I mentally break it into segments.
January gets it's own segment because it can be so brutally cold and I mostly ride in the dark. By February I'm starting to get some daylight on both ends of the commute and though we can get really cold weather in February too, the temps tend to moderate and the side roads start to thaw. The parks in Minneapolis usually quit maintaining the skating rinks by the 2nd or 3rd weekend of Feb. On March 1st, fish houses can longer be left on the lakes overnight.
I like snow and February often turns out to be the best winter month.
Usually by Mid March (or not long after) we've had at least one extended thaw where a lot of the snow melts. We may get major snow storms and cold weather after that but those come in between warmer stretches.
April is often a mixed bag. 70 or 80 one week, then snow the next but it's possible it won't snow at all.

I can only hope. The 5 day fcst is cold, but 10 day starts to warm up, back into the 40s. That'll melt yesterday's snow. Even Manhattan has snow now, and that is usually cleared.
Maybe I'll take a Citibike downtown on the way home. I can't take it all the way as I'm beyond the coverage zone.

It's supposed to get quite warm next week. Hopefully we've seen the end of single digit and especially subzero weather. I've had enough.

I actually like winter, but I also miss going fast. I think we've got a while yet - there was some melting today, but by this evening, it was cold enough for the car exhaust to make frozen trails on the roads again.

Here in Arkansas, spring seems to have just started on Thursday with temps in the 50s and going to be in the 60s tomorrow. It was kinda a rough winter though.

We got a bit of snow yesterday to freshen things up, and this morning it's bright and sunny. Frankly it's beautiful out there. Some more snow tomorrow but no bitter cold weather in site. Spring looks to be a ways off yet for us but I won't mind a few more weeks of weather like this.

High of 30° yesterday and high of 32° tomorrow. I literally had to dust my bikes today. I'm thinking the roads should be ridable tomorrow at least until it snows again on Tuesday. Spring seems a long long way away.

You guys got nothing. Winters in Colorado could benefit from a serious course of antipsychotic medication. Just yesterday our high of 60F occurred at 0435. Our low of 36F occurred at 1035 on the same day. To make it even worse, the temperature at my house at 0830 was 57F. Dropping 20+F or more in a couple of hours is not out of the ordinary around here in any time of year.
In the last 30 days, we have gone 60F to -15F back to 60F over 5 days. Lots of places have the "if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it will change". Few places I've been will whipsaw you like Colorado Front Range weather.

I haven't seen what the road surfaces look like since late January.
The 5 day forecast for the past 2 weeks has had warming temperatures on day 4 and 5. The days move every day, but the warmer temps stay on day 4 and 5 while the guy tells us it's going to warm up.
It was -1° this morning. According to the previous forecasts, we should have been a week into 40+ weather.

While there is still snow everywhere in NYC, the roads are pretty much clear. Even my local street which was a sheet of ice yesterday is dry today. The thing is though it is still cold. Only the sun and the heat of the cars is melting anything. Later this week they say, but as mrodgers says, it'll probably change before we get there.

With all the potholes opening up, I think road construction season is here right now ----- along with more snow. We are getting about 2" per hour, for the last few hours. Thunder Snow! It' snowing so hard, that I can't see the houses behind me.

They chip sealed some potholes near my place last fall and they had returned to their previous state within just a few months of winter weather.
