Good answer, but I think he meant The One Percent. (We had an Occupy Boston encampment here and I think teddywookie posts from the People's Republic of Cambridge).

I gave the poster credit for having more intelligence than to think that having a garage or a few bikes makes a person a financial kingpin or a member of The One Percent.

Bike commuters ARE one percent of the commuting population in the U.S. Is that what you meant?

I really like them. Very adjustable and stable. How much room they take up depends on the bike's bar width. If you're using them for long term storage and not daily usage, loosening the stem bolts and turning the bars really slims them down.

In my apartment, where they are safe: 1 in the bedroom, 1 in the loft and 3 in the living room.

In the living room.

We have a large apt with 2 living rooms. The front living room is poorly lit, chilly in the winter and too warm in the summer. A perfect bike room/mud room. Most of the bikes (we have 7 each) live in there and can roll right out the front door. We also have a sunroom and sometimes a bike is kept in there on a trainer. There is a walk out basement too. That's where my bf has his bike shop (man cave) with a shop quality repair stand and all his tools. A storage room off the shop has the two mtn bikes stored in there.
|
I used to keep my bikes in my room but I was growing tired of the related mess, I want to have a "quieter" room without all the visual noise. But I was living on the ground floor so I would just roll in. Now, I'm in a second floor walkup, in a larger apartment where the largest bedroom serves as storage room so I keep all my bikes in there with the exception of the commuter that sits half-way in the stairway.

In the 50's (vintage of my house) it was popular to have a breezeway between the house and garage - ours is a bikeway now

my spendy road bike goes in the living room.
my folder goes folded-up in the front hall closet. my foul-weather commuter and my wife's hybrid go down in the bike room of our condo building. i'm not allowed to get any more bikes until we move to a bigger place. |
I have hooks to hang bikes vertically along the wall in the garage. We live in a townhouse w/ a 2 car garage; my wife parks her car on one side of the garage, I park my bikes in the other side. My truck lives outside on the street.
|
My building has a dedicated indoor storage room with racks. Great for when the weather is bad, I'd hate to track all that into my apartment.
|
The two bikes that get ridden live next to the door in my apartment. I have a stand to hang them up, but it requires 2 people to assemble. My cat has refused to do his share of the labor.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps459465d1.jpg My C&V Schwinn lives in the spare bedroom. I'm planning on selling it this spring, and buying a mountain bike. |
Garage. I've debated mounting one of the remote door openers on my handlebars. For now though I just use the external keypad to close when I'm leaving and open when I get home.

Wait, you have a house and bike in each one of these cities?! Anyone want to be really hip you can invest in this kickstarter, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...hang-your-bike
I hate having bikes inside of my living space ... so I won't invest. |

That's very cool - I bet your commute(s) never gets stale and boring!
England (40%) is on a bright SS and to the university. Usually stop at one pub with wi-fi if I need to work a little in the evening or a different pub if I have no work to do CPH (40%) is on a 20yo 3sp city bike stuck in one gear with rusted fenders. Usually about 10mins to the university and usually for coffee/beer afterward. Totally beat to crap and pick it off the cobblestones every morning. Germany (15%) is on the MTB and usually involves riding into the Alps if I'm ambitious or just to the biergarten in the summer or to go swimming. Hungary (5%) is just to the lake and down the promenade to go swimming, drinking or eating. Sometimes I cycle partially around the lake (Balaton.) Usually up to here for a drink or two: http://www.estateshungary.com/img/kornyek/tihany2.jpg |
When I only had my 90's MTB I decided to hang it from the top tube on a pair of ladder hooks in the garage. Works great and it still stays there.
When I got my road bike, no way was I going to leave my shiny, brand new expensive bike in the garage. So I kept it in my bedroom on my side of the bed. Wife was okay with it. :D Then when I got my wife's bike, we were just leaving it between the table and the wall in the eat-in kitchen (we have no true dining room). And now that I'm commuting every week I just put my road bike there, also. Road bike has no kickstand so it leans against the wall. Wife's bike has a kickstand so it holds itself up just next to my road bike. Part of the reason for keeping the newer bikes in the house, besides security, is that there's really no room in the garage for anything else. We actually USE our garage for both of our cars. No way in heck am I going to junk it up to the point where one or both cars have to stay outside all the time. I'm thinking I would like to get the Xtracycle conversion kit for my MTB one of these days. If that happens I'm not sure where I'll keep the bike. Likewise if I build up a dedicated commuter bike from scratch I'm not sure where I'll keep that one, either. We have a 3rd bedroom but that's being used as a (very small) movie room with 1080p projector, 5.1 surround and all that jazz, so no bikes can go in there. Having a small house sucks. |

LOL, that thing only goes up to 80 lbs. Before I put my basket, rack and panniers on my commuter it weighed in at 56 alone.

Less expensive or attractive bikes in the shed out back, better bikes in the house.
