Caught in recent severe weather on your ride?
Just curious if anyone has been caught out or affected in US by this recent swath of severe weather from gulf coast to northeast? Please share your story.

Im not on that side ... High of 83, low of 55 , it's all Good ..
watched the Yankees at home play the Mariners , seems like they played out the game in the rain. The stadium in Seattle has a convertible roof to close when it rains. .. |
Drove in today. Saw two bikes on the way to work, and two on the way home. Hardy souls. Coming down hard, and huge amount of water on the road. Sometimes I regret driving, but not today.

I got nailed by a thunderstorm once last year. That was entertaining.

I wasn't commuting, just out for a bike ride but I stopped in at the office to go to the bathroom before heading home. It was cloudy and a bit windy and as I left the building, there was a bit of light rain, no biggie, it was summer and the rain was not cold. About 2-3 minutes later, I saw a flash of lightning and started counting, 1, 2, 3, ... 8 and then CRASH, so, if I got the count right, the lightning was about 1.5mi away. Another minute or so went by and I saw another flash of lightning and started counting and ended at five, oh dear, that one was about a mile away. Another minute or so and another flash and before I could count one, I heard the loud crash of thunder: sh1t! that was just a couple of hundred feet over my head. And then the clouds opened up and I was drenched in just a few seconds with another 10 minutes of riding left to get back home. No more lightning but the rain just came down in buckets: the "bow wave" of water from my front wheel was pouring into my shoes and each pedal cycle was like a pump as my feet pumped water out of my shoes, only to be refilled with water from the front wheel bow wave. Once I got the scare of the lightning out of my head, the ride in the rain was rather fun.

I have not recently been caught, but have in the past been caught in hail/wind/rain. The hail was 1/4 to 1/2 inches. I was lucky to be wearing a helmet and also to be about 1/2 mile from a park so I took shelter underneith the play structure. I still had a few good bruises on my back from some of the larger hail stones. It wasn't fun and I don't recommend anyone else ever try it.

Ride in this morning was a little dicey in the aftermath of the storm. Capital Crescent Trail was closed due to sewage spill, and several areas were flooded out. I was able to ride through this, but had to ride around a small lake in another area.

Santa Ana wind in my face on the ride home last night. Fires further inland, missed the worst of the smoke.

Not this recent batch of rain, but I did get caught in a downpour/thunderstorm last Summer. I got soaked and it was a bit scary at times with the lightning.
On another occasion, I missed the rain but there was lots of flooding. I rode through enough water to completely submerge the chain ring. It took a few days for my shoes to dry out. |
I drove the past 3 days due to forecasts for severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, lightning, tornadoes, etc. It's just not worth it to me, having been caught a few time in the past. Today was the first time I've ridden since Sunday because of the weather. Ironically, the storms managed to avoid my part of the area during my normal commute times the past few days, but I had no way of knowing that ahead of time. We did get plenty of severe weather, but it hit at different times or places than my commute.
