Fat Bikes
 

Having recently bought a Fat Bike (mostly) for winter riding/commuting, after 2 years of looking researching and waiting for something in my budget, I wonder if anyone else is using a Fatty for commuting? Also trying to create enough interest for a Fat Bike Forum.

I was just asking an administrator about a forum for "Fat Bikes".

I was directed to the "Mountain Bikes" forum.

I could think of two or three forums that get less traffic than a "Fat Bikes" forum would possibly get...

You've asked this question in a whole heap of forums. As you probably know, that's frowned on here.

And we do have a beach cruiser forum. Why not ask if the title of that forum could be changed to include both beach cruisers and fat bikes.

We need to generate interest, which I am trying to do by posting to a few forums that I frequent and/or that relate to the topic.

Absolutely agree and think there are forums that get less traffic than Fat Bikes would.

"Mountain Bikes" is kinda obvious, so I haven't tried to stir up interest there; and really think the potential would be dulled down among all the differentiated disciplines and recent development in mountain biking.
Fatties are so diverse and have the potential for so many uses. I believe they deserve their own forum!

I dunno anyone that would commute in winter around here on something with no fenders. Conversely, i know a few people that go all over offroad in summer on fat bikes. Perhaps mountain biking should be changed to "offroad biking" and have 2 sub forums, one for competition, one for recreation, and put fat bikes in the later?

As he stated "fat tire bikes are used in multiple disciplines" and I was merely trying to reach some of those potential interested parties.

Sorry if it was a "no-no" I am trying to raise awareness not irritate people, and directed my postings in the direction of forums I frequent/or could utilize Fat Bikes in their discipline. When I posted it as a suggestion a few weeks ago I received no reply from anyone. When I replied to another posting I received Tom's reply and was trying to do as he suggested - now hopefully not creating negative interest.

With all due respect to "Beach Cruisers" , some of their bikes are a "discipline" of Fat Bikes, but strictly purpose oriented.

As far as commuting - It's the only viable choice for some of us.who live in the great white north and Fenders can be mounted on them, although they aren't readily available commercially - YET. In fact some off-roaders have come up with awesome designs. This is just the type of thing that could be discussed in a positive manner we had such a forum!

I commute on the Fat bike in the winter, among other things I do with it. I love my fat bike, but I love pretty much all bikes.

Start your own forum. Nothing standing in your way.

we've talked about a fat bike forum here. The mountain bike forum doesn't get that much traffic, if there was demand for a fat bike forum it would show up in there, I'm pretty sure

Fat bikes eat up a lot of energy, Have fun.

I don't own either a beach cruiser or fat bike but they seem to lend themselves to a different style of riding. You might as well combine the road bike forum with the ss/fg forum.

Its the first forum I found when getting back into biking a few years ago; and until now has been my "go to" for anything bike related.

I vote "yes". The admin should see the dedicated forum to them on MBTR. There has been an explosion of interest in these fat-tire bikes exceeding even the mountain bike craze of the 1980s. From their origins in the Alaska Outback, they're just now becoming mainstream because they're just perfect go-anywhere do anything bike. I see them eventually supplanting other bikes since why would you need them when you can have one bike to go on the road, to the beach, on singletrack and on frozen winter terrain?

In addition to the forum on MTBR, there is also a very active Face Book group for Fat Bikes.
The "one bike" concept is evolving with lighter frames and wheels, more tire choices or swapping wheels sets for different riding conditions or seasons - 29+ when the flotation of 4" or wider tread isn't needed.
Also, Fat E-Bike models are starting to emerge - might be the perfect platform for pedal assist.
The interest, usage & availability is growing by leaps and bounds.:thumb:

I joined that group on FB and it appears to just be people trying to sell their fat bikes. Maybe it's the wrong group...

This guy tours with his fat bike. He was in Maine a year ago, camping in the winter and heading south to Florida. Then by boat to South America, into the Andes. Now he's in Tierra del Fuego.
