Tyre sizes for commuting?
 

Hello

I am currently running 2 x 700 x 37 hybrid tyres on my bicycle.

I am wondering if I should make the drop to 32 or even 28, but I dont know how to measure if I should.

I weigh 63kg, I am 5 foot 10 3/4 and am 19 years old, my route I bike through is mainly road and some cycle path. The roads I ride on are on the good size with only the odd pothole and bump. I do like comfort but im trying to find the balance between speed and comfort.


What size should I go for?

On well maintained smoothly paved roads, I'd opt for 25's on either a road bike, or a Performance hybrid. OTOH, on a typical mid-western American urban street (a deteriorated thoroughfare), filled with potholes and such, I'd run nothing less than 32mm, on my hybrid (currently running 35's).

A hybrid running 35mm tires within any typical mid-western urban environment should do just fine!

It sounds like your roads are in fairly decent condition. Therefore, I'd possibly even go with 28's. Of course, you have to be mindful of the fact that the less width on the tire, the more observant the cyclists has to be, and the more he has to be attentive to keeping his line.

Judging by your replies I reckon I will decide between 32 and 28s. Cheers

28-32 should be fine around here and I don't think you'll see a big difference.

I do find that the streets around here are of different material than Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

FWIW, I ride along the Tees with the 23s just fine (even on the gravel between Stockton and M'Boro) when I head to MiMA.

Hi there, yeah I usually just bike from middlesbrough to saltburn and back at the weekend and the rest is commuting to work. The roads are still pretty battered now following our winters, so much better between 2006 - 2008 :( well I could get 25s couldnt i? do you suffer much discomfort?

honestly it's fine on 23s for me. i usually just commute to work and back (20km RT).

is Saltburn nice? worth a ride from yarm?

I could even go as low as 25 then, got my eye on continental sports contacts

Saltburn is lovely for a bike ride, from where I go I enjoy taking different routes but my main route is through eston straight down the dual carriageway to redcar and then along to saltburn, love riding down the coast road (A1085) through marske then to saltburn. Summer or autumn it is really pleasent. where approx in york are you? do you mean york city or york county?

For dedicated commuting in the fast realm I lean towards 28-32 now. Did most of mine on 23 or 25. But I think the tiny speed advantage in speed you *might* gain on the skinnies is often outweighed by comfort, traction, and stability on something you can run lower pressures in.

Also, it's not all about size. You can get a good 28 that is lighter, smoother rolling, with better traction, than lots of 23s. I just ordered some jack browns in 33.3333 and fully expect them to be faster than some 25s I used to commute on. All while being much more comfortable, and able to drop way down in pressure when I'm playing in the dirt. (rarely)

Obligatory "consider something fatter" post. I won't go lower than 35. 50 is when things start getting really comfortable. Coming from 28 Conti Gatorskins there is no appreciable benefit to the harsh ride of hi pressure /smaller profile tyres

I have a bike on layaway getting ready to commute to work. Here are the specs for the tires, 700 x 32c, 30 tpi. What does all that mean? They seemed a little rough when I was test riding the bike, but I'm used to cheap Wally World mountain bikes. My commute will be on trail (paved) and roads.
