Seriously, my LBS's selections are just Cannondale and Trek and that is it. Its road bikes start at 700 dollars and I really need one for commute and fitness. Recommend some to me.

If you want to use the bike for fitness as well as commuting, I would get the Trek 7.2 FX

Get a cross bike. If you live in the greater Chicago area, you have a lot more choices than either Cannondale or Trek. In any case, the shop you prefer does business with Quality bicycles so you should be able to pick up a surly cross check which would make a fine commuter as well as a fine all rounder for general fitness riding.

+1

The Surly Cross Check is top of the line, as far as I'm concerned!

At your price point, I'd recommend the Motobecane Fantom CX bike from Bikesdirect @ $570

I ride a Surly Crosscheck, but the Trek Crossrip is worth a look.
