Taking helmet with you? Or leave it at the parking?

Where do you guys/girls leave your helmet? (if wearing a helmet)
Do you take it with you in a bag afterwards? Or do you lock it together with your bike at the parking?

Today, I didn't want to wear my backpack to store my stuff (like jacket, helmet, lunch meal,... ). I rode without, and put my jacket around my hips, and I locked my helmet to my bike when locking it at the parking. It's stored under a roof, so won't get wet.

I suppose they won't steal the helmet, if they cut the straps, the helmet is worthless.

I'm actually the only commuter there riding with helmet.

I leave mine with my bike ... but it's unsecured in the mailroom about 50 feet from me and I walk past it all day long going to and from the bathroom.

Can't imagine someone stealing a lid ... but cripes, anything's possible.

Parked under a roof I wouldn't worry about it. Commuting I carry mine in but honestly it's only to give me a visible excuse for the way I'm dressed before changing into office clothes.

I have occasionally locked my helmet up with the bike, running a cable through one of the vents.

+1. My work entertains a ton of corporate clients, so the boss has pretty much started using me as a poster-child for how we encourage green thinking (bike gets parked inside, visibly walk past with a helmet, sponsorships, etc). Also makes for a nice excuse when I stop in somewhere for a coffee.

GHAAAA, just realised there is a street cat in the neighbourhood where I left my bike.
I once saw it climb upon some bikes; not to worry about.... but she may not piss onto my helmet !
*will certainly check if helmet is wet or smelly before I put it on*
:D

May I suggest covering the saddle with plastic shopping bag? Sniffing the seat for cat spore (a more likely target imo) would not enhance your reputation ...

I sweat so much that if anyone really wanted to put on my helmet, go for it. Sometimes, on rainy evenings, I'll hang my helmet upside down from the clothes line to rinse it out.

i park my bike in a computer lab and leave my mirror, helmet and gloves on the floor under my bike. when it was colder and I was wearing a balaclava I would let it dry on the rack.
WHen I rode to subway yesterday. I carried my helmet in the store.

You might share a selfie, eating a footlong with your helmet. :)

I do this most of the time. I really just don't want to carry extra stuff around. It took me way too long to figure out I could clip my helmet to my rack. If I am nearby, I forgo the cable. If it's parked for hours, I use the cable. But I think I over lock compared to my bike neighbors, I figure that it would be too annoying to take my stuff compared to the bike next to me.

If it's raining I'll take mine with me. Since I have a rain cover on it, it's my rain hat when I have to wait for a bus. In nice weather I leave it with the bike. Now that it's light enough in the morning when I leave the house that I don't need my Blackburn Flea headlight, I leave it at home.

I just clip it around my belt & put on a hat. Not worth the risk of losing it.

Sometimes I leave it on the bike and then at other times I clip it to my backpack when going inside a grocery store.

metz1295 05-23-14 06:09 AM

depending on the parking situation, I would worry more about my helmet getting beat on by the sun for the next 10 hours more than I would worry about it being stolen. that being said, people steal things for no reason at all. take it with you. ounce of prevention...blah blah blah.

I lock my bike to a tree that is about 40 feet from the window by my desk. My helmet is dangling from a drop bar. I did find bird crap on it once.

BobbyG 05-23-14 09:35 AM

I always take it in with me. D-clip on backpack.

umazuki 05-23-14 09:51 AM

Living in Chicago, I've found that anything and everything not nailed down can and will be stolen. It doesn't matter if it has any value.

walrus1 05-23-14 10:32 AM

I used to lock it to my bike but then I bought a helmet camera so now I just take it with me.
