Why do you Bike Commute?

This is multiple choice. I have more than one of those reasons.

Mine, in order of importance are 2,3,4,1, and 7.

Any more, it's simply because that's how I get to work. It's normal, routine habit, and driving in would have to be for some exceptional reason - transporting something, body broken, that sort of thing.

And I like the feeling of getting stronger, and otherwise improving physically, when the alternative is the gradual decay of aging.

schiiism 05-23-14 09:46 AM

Also to reduce road congestion, it's just as quick to ride my bike home at 5:00 as it is to drive, and I prefer the wind in my hair to being strapped into a stuffy box :D

Steely Dan 05-23-14 09:51 AM

"I just like riding my bike."

yep, that just about perfectly sums it all up.

no need to over think this one.

RaleighSport 05-23-14 09:53 AM

I checked off all of them cept for the court appointed, too cheap, and no car... I actually happen to have two registered running vehicles, valid license, and insurance.. I just prefer not to use them if at all possible.. since I like to ride my damn bike ;)

groovestew 05-23-14 09:54 AM

I voted 2 and 3, but probably should have added 4. I used to drive when both my wife and I worked downtown and she got subsidized parking. After she went on maternity leave (1 year in Alberta) and lost her subsidized parking spot, I decided that we had better things to do with $250/month than spend it on parking. So, I guess that makes me too cheap to drive the car I have.

Wife once requested I drive to work so I could get home earlier. I ride a commuter train fifty miles to my commute and on that day the interstate was at a stand still when the train I would have been on passed me. She no longer does that.

Didn't include the choice of "hate traffic," so voted "court appointed," which will probably be underrepresented on BF.

walrus1 05-23-14 10:34 AM

You're missing two very important options!
9. Owning a car is impractical for me or where I live.
10. Mass transit in my area is either nonexistent or unreliable.

fietsbob 05-23-14 10:38 AM

I Now live close in, I could walk .. but Its easier to ride my Bike , and Justifies having previously bought them .

Null66 05-23-14 11:15 AM

Uh,
Missing a few options.

like:
It makes me happy
I could use the miles
Doc prescribes miles
I need the miles
I'm much nicer all week, even though I only commute 1 day.

andyprough 05-23-14 11:22 AM

Along with "health" and "love riding", I checked the "I am too cheap" button, but that's not really it. I'm not too cheap, but I do love thinking about the money I'm not spending on my pickup truck when I'm riding. :commute:

Rick@OCRR 05-23-14 11:46 AM

I checked #2 , #3 and #7 but would have also added: I hate driving in freeway traffic! Part of my commute is on a Metro train that runs down the middle of a freeway and the train is always going faster than the motor traffic, even with station-stops.

I did not realize it was a multiple choice poll.

My rank would be 3, 2, 1 and 8. But I am cheap, I do not want to have to pay extra gas, but not too cheap to afford a car (I am practical and love the car I have, though is someone gave me an Aston or '68 Camaro I would gladly take it).

Also a choice should be it is as fast as driving and makes me much happier.

I am cheap though I had a hard time justifiy a full strip down, clean, reface everything service after 8,000 km. I do not want to know what my bb looks like inside. But really $200 for a full strip and clean every year should be worth it.

I think about all the cool cycling gear I can afford to buy with the money I save

DunderXIII 05-23-14 11:54 AM

It's good for the heath for sure; if you take the road. Who rides in heath anyway?

Before someone answers, I'm a dad, and have 3 kids. I'm allowed to make bad jokes.

mconlonx 05-23-14 11:57 AM

Enjoy riding
Health
Cheap

hyegeek 05-23-14 12:02 PM

Along with health and love riding, I use it as training for goal rides I like to do each year. I also like being different, but it is turning out that I'm more of a trend setter at work.

sebnukem 05-23-14 12:13 PM

All of the above (not quite sure about the heath?). A more interesting poll would be why THE HELL are you using a car when you can bike?

Not saving, just re-allocating. :D ;)

Anyways, for me i voted 1, 2, 3. :)

I bike commute so I can post in the "How was your commute today?" thread.

And so I can sing, "I want to ride my bicycle! I want to ride my bike." over and over to myself.

GhostSS 05-23-14 01:26 PM

I live and work in a city and finding parking is a nightmare. I can bike and be on time or drive my car the same distance and show up late from having to go treasure hunting for parking, pay the parking fee, all while paying for gas and getting more road rage than average from rush hour.
