Best current model floor pump
 

We're looking to get one for our office so there will be a mix of Schrader people and Presta people. It needs to work well for both.

I have Topeak Joe Blow with the Twin head that I like OK but it does not always seal the best. It originally came with a head that was supposed to magically work with both but it didn't really so I switched to the twin head. I also see that there are about 5 different Joe Blow models.

Someone else said that they've had very good luck with Specialized pumps.

So, what should I get?

No recommendation ... but I'm looking for one too.

I'm always compelled to jump in and blast anyone who posts a thread with the word "best" in it, and I couldn't resist this time, either. :( I use an inexpensive Specialized pump with a gauge on it and I've had no problems with it under pretty frequent usage. However, i do not believe in "bests." There are lots of pumps that are qualified to push air through a hose.

Yeah, I'm not happy with my floor pump either. It's hard to get it to make a good seal. I did some research and it seems like the Lezyne pumps have solid reviews. Haven't pulled the trigger on that though. Would like to know what others think.

Lezyne makes a nice one. Flip thread chuck for Presta and Schrader.

I'd recommend the Nashbar Earl Grey model! :thumb:

I've also had good results with Bell pumps...

I'd have gotten a Lezyne because I've heard they're good but in the end, I saved a few bucks and got a Joe Blow and am satisfied.

How about "really good" then ? ;)

I agree that it shouldn't be that hard to make a good, reliable, and durable pump, but I've gotten some lemons in the past. Even the Joe Blow has had some issues.

Since I'm getting it for the office where it could get almost daily use given the number of people, I want to make sure it's something that will hold up well.

No reco's but I gotta think the Lezyne floor models are worth looking at. I'm super impressed by my Lezyne mini pump. Great design and high quality materials. I have joe blow as well, and it works fine but it's not great, sorta plasticy but I'll use it until it dies.

I'm not impressed with my Lezyne; Presta valve leaks (usually only from the hose), and the gauge stopped working. If I could ever find that leather washer for my old Silca when I wasn't franticly looking for something else, maybe I could get that one working again.

Watching this thread as well. I have a Bontrager pump that is just so so. Works very well with Schrader valves on my old hybrid and my son's mountain bike, not as well with Presta. Very frustrating.

I have a cheap POS Bell (?) from Target that seems to be fine. The gauge is fairly accurate from what I can tell

My shop pump is a BETO I purchased from MEC many years ago and aside from changing the hose to a longer universal it has kept working day after day and year after year and comes with a money back guarantee from MEC.

At the co-op we were using Park pumps but they are not nearly as reliable which is funny since the BETO only costs $25.00

I gotta Bell Pump from Walmart or some Xmart store, because it was so cheap, I couldn't see myself leaving without it.

Thus far, it's been the best pump I've ever had in life!

However, I just got a Nashbar Earl Grey a few weeks ago for my gorgeous neighbor, who keeps borrowing my pump without bringing it back! :D

After the buy out of Silca , there was a report that there was to be a new , most expensive floor pump made ..
for other people who can, also, buy companies.


though I've used the same Silca track pump for 30 years , and other than paint chips and a Base that lets if fall over ,

it's still working with minor service.. I grease the leather cup occasionally..

I just put mine 'toe strapped' between the legs of a tall stool in the kitchen ..

I've got one. $10 on sale. It's small enough I can throw it in the backpack if I'm worried about needing to air up on the road - much easier than using the hand pump.

I have one by Specialized. It works very well and it automatically adjusts for schrader valves and presta valves.

I had good luck with Zefal Husky which is now SKS Rennkompressor. Myself, I drifted though, away from universal heads and use Hirame for Presta and a piece of adapter hose for Schraeder.

P.S. Maybe a comment why universal/dual heads are no good. One type of heads is with one opening and some mechanism that activates pressing the pin for Schraeder. Usually that works fine at the beginning but then the mechanism gunks up, something bends and the head ceases to work in the universal fashion. Another type has two openings. That makes the head bulky and sooner or later you will run into a vent situation when you cannot attach the head to the vent, because the head does not fit into the available space. There goes the universality.

Here's the one I bought off Amazon a couple of years ago. It's a Lezyne Alloy Floor Pump currently $56.67. There are other colors but this one was the least $$$. I don't know what happened to the poster's pump above who stated it leaked. Maybe he was using the adapter. But the standard one is a screw-on for both valve types. It takes an extra minute or so to screw the head on the tube but you will not be wasting any energy with leaking air.

I apologize for being so smirky a few posts back. I'm not really sure why I get away with using so many really cheap bicycling products. My bike and all its parts and accessories get A LOT of use, at least from April to November, and very few things ever break down. I've had my $30 Specialized Air Tool pump for a number of years, have used it on all my bikes, all my friends' and neighbors' bikes, and lots of strangers' bikes (both Presta and Schrader) and have never even given a thought as to whether it's good enough or needs to be replaced. It's built tough, has a very easy-to-read gauge that appears accurate, and doesn't pump air that smells like rotting corpses. There must be other very good pumps, but if you purchase this one, you probably won't have to think about this again for quite some time -- unless your co-workers beat the thing to death.

Hirame is an exquisite albeit expensive (see e.g. here) pump head. The lever that makes the chuck close on the vent is moved sideways. This reduces chances of air release and makes it easier for the head to fit into a tight space. You agonize about the head's cost before you get. After you use it, you don't look back. That head is commonly used as Presta. I have the pieces to turn it into Schraeder, but I find the conversion for individual pumpings cumbersome and just have another extension hose with a more standard Schraeder head.

I bought a big yellow Joe Blow so long ago that on my ride home from the lbs I had to dodge dinosaurs. So I don't know nuthin' about new pumps - my tall Joe Blow still does the trick.
