No bike commute for me today....

No siree. Yesterday I worked my normal shift 7:30-4:30, went home, had an event to go to, then got home around 11pm, and had to work my night shift stuff late. Then around 12:30am had to come to the office to fix a dead server. And I've been here ever since. So far I've been up for 28 hours straight. And yet I still worry that I didn't get to bike to work today. On top of all that I still have to work my normal 7:30 to 4:30 shift today. And no my boss isn't a slavedriver, but I have heavy responsibility where I work so sometimes I have to go 'above and beyond'. I figure I'll have been up around 34 hours by the time I get to get some sleep.

And yet I STILL am bummed I didn't get to ride my bike. Us cyclists have funny priorities :D

No commute for me either since I had the day off WHEE!

My day has been great...rode all over the area, found a killer homemade ice cream shop...and a yardsale wehere I bought a pretty nice 8x10 oil painting for $1 (she wanted fifty cents....I couldn't do that, at least a dollar...)

Bad part is I know I'm going to be hauling butt all next week since everytime we get a day off, we have to make up for it somehow...

Did you take a nap on the server room floor?

server rooms are too cold for sleeping...sometimes behind the server rack where all the servers blow their hot air it's pretty warm.

They keep em cold for a reason, if they didn't you'd pull up the tiles on the raised floor and find all the admins sacked out!

I have nodded off in a server room before though...during a weekend when we had 2 main servers die.

get some sleep ryko!

All that soothing humming from the cooling fans, it's real easy to doze off...

Oh man I finally got some sleep! Oh, blessed sleep. Catatonic: remind me not to ever mention an open wound around you, lest you pour salt into it. :p

I actually never got any sleep until I got off at around 1:30pm. Slept in back of car while wife did the weekly shopping, and then we came home and I hit the rack.

So it sounds like some of you are in or have been in 'the business'? Do tell! IT workers untie!

hehe, I've had my days in IT....

....most irritating was new years eve, about 10PM sitting there at a server rack of LIVE servers, drilling out screws that the "admin" stripped by using a power drill to drive them instead of the cordless driver I gave him.

....needless to say I missed new years that night...

...then we had the 48hr co-location move....that one really got me angry....a mustang is not a pickup truck! 2,000lbs of steel don't belong in the trunk!

Heh, and of course the ever fun "can you drop this off in Redwood City in the next hour?" .....'dude....I'm on a bike today....remeeber my memo' ...."Oh I don't have time to read those, and it was your job to notify me, so go do it" 'I did notify you' "no you didn't" 'do i have to go sick mommy on you?' "are you smarting off to me?" 'Can I take the fifth?' "the fifth of what?" '......nevermind...I'll get Chris to do it...'

Another IT guy here. I literally kept a sleeping bag and change of cloths in my office for years. Your really don’t know when you are going to have to pull an all-nighter. Now I’m close enough to work to ride home, grab a shower, get a bit of real food and I can be back in 40 minutes.

Fortunately our management has a genuine appreciation for us technology folks and treats us pretty well.

Well, I guess that's the one good thing about not owning a car. I have no choice but to ride to work! I don't work in IT, though. I do customer service. :p

Yep. I'm the S. E. for my employer. 13 locations spread out over 55,000 square miles of central and sw Montana.

Had server go down a couple of weeks ago. So. I feel your pain. :)
