Smile and say Bing for the camera.

I was riding to work this morning when I noticed the retroreflective striping on a car approaching at a right angle to me lighting up behind the tress on the corner. At first I thought it was a cop car and hoped they would notice me (or at least notice my lights) as they turned the corner towards me, and then I saw it was a camera car with the Bing logo on the back. Apparently Bing is creating their version of Google Earth called Streetside and will obscure my face before posting the images, has anyone else seen these cars before?

cool ... competition is a good thing

just saw this

I once saw a google car, and kept checking that intersection for an image of my car. Finally found it.

Just sorry it wasn't on the bike.

They did that in Japan too when they went to an abandoned island. That would have been interesting to do.

No, though a couple of weeks back I was passed by the Google Streetview car. I know Bing is doing it as well.

Now just to wait 3-6 months and see if I get on Streetview. :)

How long did it take? Weeks? Months?

fietsbob 07-15-14 09:46 AM

*sigh* Bing has had this for roughly 5 years. Their coverage stinks compared to Google.

I do use Bing for searching though. Bing Rewards has paid for several items I've purchased on Amazon.

Went looking for Avalon on Catalina Island. No cars from the mainland allowed. Still no street view.

Kept checking for a month or two, then gave up until this thread reminded me.

Google has done a TON of non-vehicle-accessible spots. Last year they did the south pole/McMurdo station on a backpack cam. They've done street views on hundreds if not thousands of indoor locations.

I live too far out for Google street view (or any other such as Bing.) Monday night though, I was riding behind the house and a helicopter was circling the little town near me. As I cruised down the road several times it passed directly over me at a pretty low altitude. It felt weird. First thing I thought of was the birdseye view of Google or Bing maps. Then it dawned on me, they might survey the area before building all these fracking gass wells and that is what it probably was.

I was hoping to look at Google in a few weeks and see if I could see myself as I had on a day glow yellow shirt. Google caught my wife a few years ago with the birdseye view coming down our road coming home from grocery shopping. I know she was grocery shopping because on the next pass, they caught her car sitting in the driveway pulled in backwards when you scroll down to the house which she only does when she's unloading groceries.

Google Street View caught my coworker as he passed through an intersection in his town.

I think I've used Bing once or twice (I still think carburetor, not search engine when encountering the name Bing), and never gave it much thought that they would try and compete with Google in mapping. I'm sure there are other companies out there doing the same thing as well as surveying, I bet that wasn't the first time I've ever been on camera while riding.

I think of a film star and singer , last name Crosby.. back when we used to have Hope..

unterhausen 07-16-14 09:33 PM

I was passed by a Google car while on my bike. I didn't have much hope of ending up on street view, because they had previously photographed that road on a perfect day with no cars, peds or bikes. I was really surprised at some of the forest gravel roads they have done around here. I was also surpised they haven't made it to most of Huntingdon PA, I was making a cue sheet and wanted to check some things, but no dice there

Bings are carburetors to me, too.

Google Earth has my pickup in my yard, backed up to a recently unloaded pile of horse manure. But their street view people better never get near my house or they will have been trespassing for a couple of hundred yards.

DiabloScott 07-17-14 11:15 AM

I saw the BING car in my neighborhood while riding and I thought I'd follow it and get into dozens of shots, but it made a U-turn and I didn't get into a single frame.

Also, I feel like I'm cheating when I use a BING search engine in a Chrome browser.

I 'd like to see the cameras put on Boats , to show what the town looks like from the river side.

maybe show what people are, still, dumping into the rivers .
