I've got a Timbuk2 Swig, just picked it up a couple of months ago. I dig it. I had a Timbuk2 medium laptop messenger bag for almost a decade before that. I'm actually not using the bag quite so much right at the moment, I just did another commuter rebuild and am using a rack and panniers. It's done a great job of reminding me how much I hate what a pair of panniers does to the handling of a zippy cyclocross bike. On the other hand, the sweaty back thing is kind of annoying in the summer. For a while I was rocking a big Wald front basket on a different bike, and that was pretty good, but more than a couple pounds in a front basket on a bike not intended to carry weight on the front wheels and things get pretty unpleasant. So pretty much everything is some kind of compromise. For three seasons out of the year, I think I lean toward the backpack, provided it's designed for wearing on a bicycle.

I check thrift stores for bargains. But had to buy a new one recently. KMart, Outdoor Products (not my favorite brand), with a waist belt ~$25.

I normally don't need a backpack, but if I do I just grab whatever my teenager threw out last year after wearing it half to death. I don't know what it is. It has two compartments. I don't feel much need to be picky about backpacks.

I just picked up a Timbuk2 messenger bag - first time hearing of the brand and only cos my friends told me the airport store was selling them at 50% off, plus an additional 20% if 3 or more bags are bought.
Looks and feels good. Loving it. |
Has anyone tried to carry a mini New York Krypto in the lock loop of a Timbuk2 Especial Messenger bag? I'm worried that the lock is too heavy and will rip my bag, lose my lock on the street and possibly damage my bike when it falls. Maybe they designed it carry such a lock but I don't know for sure and Timbuk2's customer service does not respond to my inquiry.
Thanks, Puma |

I have a Nike sling bag that has a caribeanor lock on it( that's right its attachable with a lock.). I bought it back in 2004 and it has a expandable mess fabric construction, a bling pocket, and a cool pocket on the back. It literally has the greatest feeling strap. I added a belt to it to keep its rotation around my torso from slipping. I think they stopped making them but I would buy another if I could find it. If anyone knows please PM me. V |

On the other hand, I drove about 30 pounds of tools and supplies on my 40-pound bike yesterday, from lower Manhattan to Bushwick Brooklyn and back. I used panniers. No regrets. The bike drove like a truck, which is fine, because it has the gears to do so. If I could have made the transmission and diesel sound effects while shifting and accelerating, it would have made the experience complete.
It has been flirting with 90F here this week and the humidity has been really high which would not be considered backpack weather but this works quite well... :D http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...ikeE%20(3).JPG http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...ikeE%20(4).JPG This carries a Kryptonite NY, pump, tools, wallet, camera, rain jacket, and a litre and a half of water and still has room to spare... |
