Bar Ends Question??
I recently put some Forte bar ends on my bike. Is it possible to wrap them up with handlebar tape to make them more effective? I'm not sure if the tape would stick or not? Thanks

Effective? explain your Criteria of effectiveness.
bar tape really does not stick to the handlebars on its own, though if you are willing to add more glues of your pwn be my Guest .. On a road bike. a bit of tape wrapping on the ends of the finished tape winding is what holds it on. I bought Ergon's Combination Grip and bar end for it's integrated comfort. |
Why wouldn't it? But, you should know, the glue in bar tape mainly locates the tape, it is the pressure of the wrapping that mainly keeps the tape in place. Grips OTOH do have extremely powerful cement anchoring them in place. So much so that they usually have to be destroyed to be removed. You don't see many wrapped bar-ends. There might be some foam grips that might fit bar-ends, even if they have to be cut. Some grips have a screw tightened locking collar that makes them easily removable. Forte bar-ends are nice and very reasonable. I can't think of any bar tape that wouldn't be a total waste of moeny and not be a terrible value. What about the bar-ends do you feel would be "more effective" by being wrapped?

Rubber covered grips such as Ergon and Cane Creek (use both on my commuter bike) work better than anything else I've tried. Here is my touring cockpit, which is basically the same as for commuting, except for the GPS.

I have taped my bar ends. It works well.

Yes you can. I did it with my old commuter MTB with bar ends.
Start wrapping at the top of the bar end, where the plug is (take the plug out, obvi) with a little bit hanging over the end of the bar. Wrap down the bar and cut if off just as you get to the end and tape it with electrical tape. Pop the plug back in the top to hold in/down the tape at that end. Done. I might have a pic of it, but I'm at work right now. |
Check out LizardSkins Bar End Grips. I haven't used them so this isn't a recommendation one way or another, but I saw them recently while web-surfing for bike stuff. Nashbar carries them:
