Opinions on commuter

Hello,

I have been looking for commuter, road bike with a steel frame.
My commute is 20km with a hill at the end. I was looking through kijiji and came across this Kona Honk Tonk 2009 with 105 and new ultegra wheels.
I was wondering is it is a good deal for a 5-6 year old bike?
I can't find any here locally but online it is it goes for $1099 with Sora.

Vélo kona en acier 54p monté en shimano 105 | de route | Laval / Rive-Nord | Kijiji

Please let me know. (Sorry the listing is in french)

Thanks
Nassa

I take it you live in Quebec? The Kona H-nky Tonk looks decent but it appears to be overpriced for a 5 year old bike. It should no more than $500-600. $900 is about in new bike territory.

You didn't say what height you are but a 54 cm bike fits 5'6"-5'8" riders. I'd pass it up if only because its overpriced to begin with and is a not a good value.

Yes I live I'm Quebec.
I am 5'9" my other is a small or 52cm so I thought I would be ok.
i thought with the new wheels and the 105 it might be worth it.
You mention $900 is new bike territory, what do you suggest?

What's your budget? You mentioned the new Kona is $1099 - about $100 difference or so. If you're going to buy the bike for that kind of money, buy a new bike.

I recommend the Trek Crossrip, Specialized AWOL, Jamis Bosanova, Salsa Vaya and Surly Straggler as kind of bikes with disc brakes you'll want to look at for commuting.

Looks like in pretty decent shape.

54 cm is fine for someone 5'9. I'm 5'11 and often feel that a 56 is barely small enough for me. A guy I regularly ride with is the same height and he loves a 54 over a 56.

buying used, I wouldn't pay more than 50% MSRP.

1. the bike was probably sold at 85% or less of MSRP.
2. then 30% off immediately once sold
3. the current owner might get it used too
4. there are ALWAYS deals
5. this year's sora may work as wells as last year's 105.
