That always bugged me too. But two things are reassuring about it. Blocking electromagnetic radiation depends on the wavelength versus the size of the gaps in the cage, and windows are way bigger so you'd expect cell phones to not have much trouble. The second thing is that the metal provides an alternate, easier way for the electricity to go around even if it's not a complete faraday cage. I'd stay out of the gaps though.
