2 Choices Commuter/Tourer
Right now my primary use is commuting but I plan to do more touring in the future.
I often pull a trailer with cargoes of various kinds and would probably tour this way too. Right now I am using an older Fisher hybrid for these uses but would like to upgrade. The contenders: Salsa Vaya II Vaya 2 | Bikes | Salsa Cycles BikesDirect Fantom Ti Cross Bike Save Up to 60% Off Titanium Cyclocross Bicycles | Road Bikes - Motobecane Fantom Cross Team Titanium | Cross Bikes Vaya advantages: I like my LBS and they give me good service Maybe just ignorance but I am hard on wheels and believe these wheels might more durable for hard use 3 ring crank set with lower granny gear more relaxed geometry probably better suited for my preference and for longer rides I have ridden this bike and I know I agree with the saddle, bars, and shifters (though it made me want a shorter stem) Fantom advantages: Like that Ti frame $300 cheaper Actually, I think the exercise of writing this post has made my mind up for me already. But still interested if anyone notes any advantages or disadvantages that I have not mentioned. |
They are both great bikes and you should buy the one that just speaks to you. With the Fantom you are buying a bike that you most likely have never ridden which is a risk, not a huge one but one none the less. I think Salsa has done a good job designing the Vaya's and it can do everything you need it to do. There is also something to be said to buying from a local store.
What ever you choose, I am sure you will be happy. They are both great bikes. |
