Rain on weekends.

Anyone notice a pattern lately in the northeast? Since the winter, we've been having snow storms and a lot of rain centered around weekends.
I know at least in NYC during the week, there are so many cars on the road and buildings giving off heat that I'm beginning to believe in nascar's "vortex" theory, that the trillions of BTU's of heat given off during the work day helps push away the storms but once the weekend comes, we lose this high pressure and the storms come rushing in. I wonder if nature's somehow adapted to time their storms to this pattern.

svloid,

There's a lot of research being done exactly on that topic. I haven't read anything conclusive yet, but there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that the urban "heat-island" effect does play a large role in thunderstorms. Down here in Atlanta, the urban core records temperatures 5-6 degrees higher than the surrounding country side. This reflected heat becomes a thermal column and actually creates localized summer thunderstorms above the city. Like we're generating our own warm fronts. I have no doubt that you're right on and that this will be a big topic of environmentalists and weather forecasters in the future.

I am not going to discount what happens in big cities but out here in the sticks we have the same thing. IMO it is Murphy's law. the best time to ride is ont he weekend so the only time it is going to be SURE to rian is on the weekend. Lets look back. Sat was heavy rains and temps in the high 30s low 40s, Sun was snow showers with temps in the mid 30s. This morning (Mon for those reading some other day) the sun is out and while windy the high is supposed to be 54*. Tomorrow is a high of 65* under bring sunshine according to the experts and on Wed it is supposed to be in the low 70s...of course I am traveling to Charlotte and can't take my bike.

Grrr. Stupid Murphy. I had just finished building up my new fixie (my springtime, fast, road-riding fixie) on Friday! I should have just gone out on the weekend anyway, because what's a little rain, really? But I didn't and now I have to wait TWO WEEKS (because my wife is away this coming weekend, leaving me alone with the baby)! At least there's baseball to distract me.
