Commuting bike videos

Being new here there might be a chance I didn't dig deep enough in the threads but are there other forum members who have videos of their commutes to work. I have a few on my youtube channel and I enjoy seeing what kind of traffic/terrain/hell and high water other people bike through on their daily adventures on the way to working for tha man. If you do have one post it here for all to enjoy as I do.

and if you are curious I am riding through the streets of Van on my '90 Cannondale SR800

Sweet! Looks like you were really flying down that hill after Boundary...

I've made a couple of Traffic Slayer videos from my commute. Haven't been recording much recently though.

Crank it! :p

Ya get some good speed down that part of Hastings... also the area with the most jackasses flinging the driverside door open with out looking first.

Thos are a couple of cool vids you got there. See all the cars sitting in rush hour as you go flying by is the best especially on the way to Annacis. Makes me want to get the camera back on the bike.

Cheers,

Dave

ps: feel free to use my videos as a demo of what to do on the road (if any) and what not to do on the road (plenty). This video may not be used as evidence in a court of law.

I have close to 100 commuting videos in this album at Vimeo:

A few of them don't seem to be working. Don't know why. Just keep going down the list until you find some that work. You can always download them and watch them that way too.

thanks for running traffic signals. if more cyclists cycled in this manner motorists would likely drive a little more cautiously. :)

Fascinating videos. I don't agree with running the red lights, but the only person that will get hurt by doing so is yourself, so go for it if it makes you happy.

I may try to do a video someday, but it would be much more tame as my commute is mostly rural and a couple of neighborhoods.

I also enjoy bike commute videos. FWIW, here are mine: bgvideo62 - YouTube

Another vote for JoeyBike, I live close and recognize many of the streets he lights up. I tried today to do a 20 MPH JoeyBike commute. I didn't quite make it, when I do, JoeyBike's getting a PM :)

Just keep at it. You will get there if you keep hammering.

To quote Greg LeMond when asked if bike racing ever gets easier. His response was: "No, you just go faster." This is truth.

Is maybe it's the camera angle but I happen to think the OP is riding in the door zone far too much.

Well the camera does have a 142 degree lens angle but I must say you are right.....I live in the door zone. there isn't one bike lane on my 28km commute to work and I ride at different times than rush hour so all outside lanes have cars parked. I am constantly filtering through parked cars and the cars passing on my left. I have learned from many close calls to have one eye on the driver seat of every parked car to see if it is occupied and some dumb ass is going to fling the door open without looking first (which is against the law). There is also the factor that I just really enjoy riding in close quarters with cars.... safer than with other bikes and pedestrians.

You have to be careful Dave.

I would ride behind a a car rather than ride through the door zone at full speed. I'll be honest and say that I ride in the door zone at times but at slower speeds. I would prefer to let the traffic go past and take the lane than ride in the door zone.

I believe most people ride in the door zone because they don't how close the traffic is behind them. I would invest in a rear view mirror (The Third Eye) and learn to take the whole lane.

I started watching your video again and noticed you were riding in the door zone even though there were no cars behind you. It's at these moments you really need to be taking the full lane. A rear view mirror will help alot!

I could not watch the entire video having been a door victim years ago. I feel it's only a matter of time. I hope I'm wrong.

You do make good suggestions and recommendations. Some I employ and some I do not. I do not use a mirror for the simple fact my head is on a swivel. I am fully aware of my surroundings and I find that more effective than a 2" diameter mirror.

Being that the camera does film at 142 degrees it is still not showing everything as the rider sees it. I have been biking to work for 20+ years and 11+ years the same 28 km route without incident because I am aware of my surroundings. Yes there is always a chance of a "freak accident" that in retrospect can possibly be prevented with better planning and preventative measures.

I like to ride fast. Getting to work is how fast can I get from A to B. I have been called the anti-commuter commuter by my friends for my lack of "commuting set up" (ie: mirrors, panniers, racks, etc). I wear a back pack, tattered shorts and futbol jerseys and have been referred to as a courier more times than I can count.

There are plenty of occasions over my 28km daily ride where I am in the middle of the lane (not just to draft the bus leaving its berth). To some it may seem as reckless and unsettling but to me it is a controlled, fast and fun experience where I have, over 1000's of occasions, weighed out the risk and exercised caution.

I do appreciate your concern that you are trying to convey and knocking on my wood desk as we speak since you brought it up;)

Cheers,

Dave
