Marin Muirwoods 29er

Who is riding a Muirwoods for there commute ? Post some pics and do you have advice on upgrades ?

I sold mine a few years ago, but this thread might give you some inspiration:

I think this configuration was my favorite (though not for commuting).

I`ve had my Muirwoods for 3 weeks, about 100 or so miles, and so far I`m really happy with it. Upgraded the saddle to a Brooks Select, the grips to Brooks Plump, and the handlebar to a Salsa Bend 2. The Brooks saddle(especially) and grips were a big improvement - I like the Bend 2 bars but wonder if an On One Mary might be even better. I will probably change the tires to Schwalbe 2" Almotions and add some decent platform pedals with grip. If I change the tires I will have to get another rack as the Tioga rack I have only clears the stock tires by about 1/2 an inch.

Mine is set up as a fun bike.

I've found WTB Freedom Cruz tires made a big difference over stock in comfort and ride plushness. 700 X 52.

I've installed a Brooks Flyer saddle and Wald 896 cruiser bars. The pedals are still stock and I'd like wider platform pedals in the future.

Changed the tires to 2" Big Apples, the carrier to a Topeak 29er rack, and the pedals to xpedo Sprys. Big difference in speed and comfort with the BA's.

Upgrade what you don't like. For me it was the brakes so I got Avid BB7 brakes.

I wore the Continental back tire down to the threads, so I move the front tire to the back, and installed a Schwalbe Marathon Supreme on the front. Very nice tire for street, though it does cost $80.

Slapped on a 35 degree stem. My neck is happy but it might be a bit too much. Would like to be just a little more forward and lower. 25 degrees might be the sweet spot for commuting.

Do you still have this bike? Were the 2" Big Apples a good choice for you? I really like the upgrades you made to your bike, so would be interested in what you say about anything you ended up really liking or not liking about them.

I'm curious because I have a 2010 Muirwoods and will need to change the tires out soon.

Still have it.

The Big Apples have been great - not the fastest or lightest tires, but they (along with the Brooks Saddle) add tremendously to the overall comfort level. Reliable too - just got a flat this week for the first time. I sometimes, wish it was a little lighter off of lights in the city, but I often use it for long rides along the rivers here in Kanagawa and, for that, it`s perfect. Once up to speed, it doesn`t want to stop and miles pass by with little effort. It handles gravel pretty well too.

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely check out those tires. I use my bike mainly for commuting back and forth to work and have been pretty happy with it.

I liked your tan grips & seat so much that I copied it for my 2010 Muirwoods 29er (albeit w/ accessories that aren't as nice).

I'm currently looking at the Muirwoods 2017. How would you say the ride is with all stock? Buttery smooth as they say it to Jamis Coda Elite?

amos77 03-31-17 07:16 AM

Such a nice bike ,too bad it's not imported to Israel.
I'm commuting today with the Marin San Rafael 2010 and like it very much too.

Thread back from the dead!:lol:

Since then, Raleigh came out with the Redux and Giant offers the ToughRoad SLR.

There is a market for urban 29ers.

My 2010 Muirwoods has been my main commuter since last June. It's been very reliable and is nearing 3K miles for the last 10 months or so.

Here it is bogged down with commute stuff:

And here it is going through a puddle:

Just added a set of Compass Snoqualmie tires. They`re a little faster and, rather remarkably, even smoother than the Big Apples.

Do you know the model name of your kickstand?

Whilst I have a different type that works well on my Toughroad, yours looks like it might be even better.

I have this one from Bontrager.

It does the job.
