Hmmm. Do you cherish your wife?

hmmm can you tell me anything about the bars on the first beater? they look like a cross between a trekking bar and drops...

I cherish my rides (at least most). I admire the human ingenuity and technology that went into my bike.

hmmm.... so 4 "beaters"? Why would one want/need a collection of crappy bikes? lol

Scott Drop in bars I believe, just has a second set of flats down off the bottom of the drops. Fairly noodley. They stopped producing them in the 90's.

Yeah they're "crappy" alright, and if you have any bikes as "crappy" as them, feel free to send me them so I can properly dispose of them for you *cough*your treks*cough* ;). Your beater doesn't fit my criteria so please do not send. (and it's more like 6+ beaters)

I guess it depends on your definition of cherish. I get all my commuter bikes from the local scrapyard, paying roughly 30 cents a pound. I build them into fairly minimalist commuters that fit a variety of needs. I've got the rainy commuter, the snow commuter, the ice commuter, the summer commuter. They all get maintained, since I don't want a breakdown enroute, but I wouldn't say any are cherished. I tend to give one or two of them away each year as soon as I have another in the wings. My coworkers call me the bike missionary as I am always encouraging others to start bike commuting.

tl:dr, no, I don't cherish the commuter bikes, they are almost disposable purpose built vehicles.

Now your collection I'd like to see, is it all department store stuff or do gems drop in?

I'll see what I can do about some pics, but currently there is a raleigh detour 4.5 (2008ish I think), a motobecane 9iron elite, an older nishiki road bike, an older ultimo (I think, only "ultim" is visible on the sticker). a very old huffy road bike, and a mongoose pro mtb, uh.. cant recall the last one. its still being built up as I scrounge components from the scrapyard.

FWIW, its not that I am against buying new bikes, my greenspeed magnum recumbent trike was both new, and fairly spendy. I just don't care to invest much in the heavily used commuter that shares bikerack space with many others, and rides on some very rough roads at as high a speed as I can manage at any given time. I also enjoy being able to look at the weather/streets and just choose the right bike, without changing tires.

I had a snarky remark here, but I'm going to go back to just assuming you were messing around before and aren't trying to be an ass. The joke was you can send me your "crappy" bikes (which aren't crappy) to go with my "crappy" bikes (which I don't find crappy).

cobrabyte 10-09-14 11:20 AM

Hey, you're the one calling them "beaters", not me. Isn't a beater a crappy bike? Or are we re-defining beater now?

Refer to above, your response time was too fast here :P

cobrabyte 10-09-14 11:42 AM

my point is your bikes *aren't* crappy. It was a compliment, although I now see the misunderstanding :thumb:

Oh and the trek bit was an attempted compliment here as well, been drooling on those since I joined.

Jewel, and a tool.

Love my machine. And that love translates into increased motivation to ride and cleverly eliminate excuses to not ride.

I cherish my bike when i start my ride home from work and see the freeway stacked bumper to bumper.
