Commuting and hair
Assuming that you're not bald or sporting a shaved head, what do you do to keep your hair from becoming a sweaty, insane-looking disaster area when you arrive at your destination?
I always end up looking like the Joker from Batman. Not a great way to enter a meeting, unless of course the room is tilted to a villainous angle and packed with your loyal henchmen.... |
I make sure my hair is completely dry and has been in the style I want for the day for at least 10-minutes before putting on my helmet. It seems more willing to go back to that look after the helmet comes off and the sweat dries if I do that. I also ride pretty slowly so that (unless it is super hot - which is not uncommon in Memphis) I don't arrive sweat drenched. I usually duck into the restroom when I first arrive at a destination to do a quick mirror check.
One qualifier here: I have a pretty short, wash and wear hair style, so I'm not doing anything terribly complex with it. |
I have a military style haircut , problem solved.... No need for a man to spend 20 minutes in front of a mirror fixing his hair.
|
Never had a problem after my hair got long enough to tie in a ponytail; never had a problem when my hair is buzzed down to 1/4". In between is only vanity.
Try a helmet liner or doo-rag. Or go without a helmet. |
I keep my hair pretty wash-n-wear short too. I can usually fix the worst of the mess on arrival by running my hands through my hair. When I kept my hair a bit longer I sometimes kept a brush in my saddlebag, just in case.
It gets pretty windy around here sometimes, and if you have to step outdoors at all for your commute, your hair is going to get messed up. Unless you use Jersey Shore-like quantities of shellac, which is probably frowned on much more than rolling into the office in need of a comb. |
Try a cycling cap or quick dry bandana

"4" on the top, "2" on the sides. I've (or the wife) cut my own hair for a very long time. Hank Hill would approve of the cost savings.

#2 on the sides and back here too, which means 2 millimeter and don't ask me what that is in inches, just saying and not trying to steal this thread into metric v English system, ....

I always shower the night before and don't mess with my hair in the morning. I just hop on the bike and go. I rinse my head in the sink at work and style it. I do keep my hair fairly short so it dries pretty fast and is easy to style. Frankly I'd go with a more military hairdo if my head wasn't so misshapen. I'll echo the advice to keep hair short.

People who know trimmer stand-offs by number rather than length are generally balding.
Not that there's anything wrong with that / just sayin'... |
Are you saying that guys with no hair is like a tree with no leaves???
jk |
I thought the OP wanted to shave his hair in order to be faster and get to work on time.

Are any of you women? There are not so many of us actively posting on this forum, it seems.
My hair is pretty wild if it's any length past one inch long. The only problem I get from biking is flattening (from the helmet), so when I get to work, I go into the bathroom and fluff it up with wet hands and let it dry naturally. I have a lot of female colleagues who commute and don't have much of a problem with hair. Now, that would probably not be the case if you were to commute with permed or specially styled hair, but our workplace is rather informal. For the guys here, it seems that heavy gel application is the norm (I'm in Europe). It would take something a lot tougher than a helmet and an urban commute to disturb that. |

I carry a comb.
I goop up my hair before the ride (gel or wax pomade) and ride with a helmet. When I get to work my hair is damp and the hair has a couple of depressions from the helmet cushions; I remove the helmet and comb things back into shape in the bathroom. Easy-peasy. #4 on top, #2 .5 on the sides. |
I assume you didn't post this because you're looking for grooming advice (which seems to be just shave it off). Your helmet choice makes a big difference. Many nicer road helmets are very lightweight. The lighter it is, the less it will muss.

I commute hair and thair.
|
I get cleaned up in the washroom... wet a washcloth and wet down my hair, face, wash other parts and dry off with a towel.
get dressed and before I leave, I comb my hair... |

I wouldn't want the OP to get the impression that you have to have a military style do to bike commute. Professional women with styled hair can definitely make it work. |
