yeah... you're actually right.

it's probably related to hedonic adaptation on my part, but them thar fenders were just the right ones for my situation. i likes 'em. they go good with the rest of the bike stuff. and... i only own two bikes - one which is a fairly crapulous schwinn sierra comfort bike from around 2006 which i just haven't donated yet, and one which is brand new and all kitted out tips into the $1600 zone (or around $1480 without the fenders). i ditched my car last December, so i have quite a bit of unencumbered currency and time for other stuff i like. you wouldn't believe what i've paid to have a smart phone since 2008, and i've been more frugal with that than most.

What kind of problems did you run into to if you don't mind my asking?

I got a set a few weeks ago and been riding with them since. It's a very nice fender, and I like the fit of them. Although they're made for 23's, I'm using 25's and the clearance is tight. I may drop down to some cheap 23's just for winter riding.

the VO fenders come pre drilled and are complete set now. Once you cut the stays, it should be pretty easy. If you've never had fenders before, fenders stays are pretty beefy.

I think the VO fenders are easier to install than SKS fenders. However, I like SKS fenders for commuting more. Since it's plastic, it weighs a bit lighter, more durable, and I care less about it. The VO fenders are really nice quality, and probably something I would put on a C&V type of bike.

I have VO Zeppelin aluminum fenders on one of my bikes. Good fenders.

So issues were simple and I was dumb - the real show-stopper was the front fender and parts to mount to the fork at the crown. Not all bikes require additional components, this bike did, and I didn't have any spares around the house.

Other minor issues included figuring out deflating the rear tire to mount it with the fender, this bike has a horizontal drop out and there isn't enough room to mount the tire fully inflated. This is less of an issue with the VO fenders since this issue would have come up with any fender on this bike. Here's a pic of the bike with fenders mounted, damn good looking (if I can say so myself).

VO fenders can be installed at home, you need a good tool kit, may need some extra parts and not be as dumb as me. If you buy from the LBS, ask for so additional input before bring them home, make sure you have what you will need. Our shop was super nice and helpful (Calhoun Cycle in Mpls).

Lastly, I'm able to install other fenders (Planet Bike) without any issue. So my skills are totally lacking, so the VO are more challenging to mount than Planet Bike.

I must admit that the price did give me pause but then I found them for $90 during a one day sale. Still expensive but acceptable. My LBS uses Sunlite fenders. Anyone have any experience with Sunlite fenders? I am planning on having them installed on my Trek Shift 3.

I'm running Planet Bike ATB fenders on my hybrid and couldn't be happier with them. I cheated though I'm running 26" fenders on 700 X 32's. Had to do a little modifying where the rear mounts to the cross tube between the chain stays to get a good fender line and to clear my FD but I blame that on the bike's geometry not the fenders. If you'll be riding in heavy wet snow you'll probably want more clearance between the tires and fenders but this one doesn't get ridden in snow, just rain. The snow and ice bike has PB Cascadias with studded tires.
