first day commuting to work on my bike

Woke up this morning and saw I hit 203lbs. Got on my bike and rode to work --- making a commitment to ride to work from now on. That's 20ish miles roundtrip.

Feels good and I hope I can keep it up!

Careful - bike-commuting is additive! I start biking to work about 10 years ago, now days, I never drive to work. I get tons of (good-natured) crap for my dedication to bike-commuting.

Enjoy!

It's always encouraging to read the "First Commute to Work" accounts. Congratulations, and welcome to the club! :)

I agree. I hate days that I can't bike to work :(

You've made a wise decision! I filled up my car yesterday for the first time since July 11th. Bike commuting is awesome.

My wife tore a contact lense at work today and didn't bring her glasses....so I have to miss my afternoon ride home and drive her instead. I mean, safety and blah blah, but man I was looking forward to that ride! 66, sunny and almost no wind - the reward for biking in in the 30s earlier.

yeah it was alittle tough this morning but I'm looking forward to my ride home. I should have done this a long time ago but kept making excuses. Now that I have though it wasn't as bad as I thought. Took me about 40 mins but it's probably becuase I'm so out of shape. I think I can cut that down to 25 or 30 once I'm back in shape.

similar here.

on Monday morning and Friday afternoons I take the rail-speed train and don't cycle :(

therefore, my commuter week it cut to 4 RT days :(

That's fantastic! Don't worry too much about cutting your time down, that will happen eventually.

Stick with it and you'll find yourself wondering why it took you so long to get started - many of us now hate it when something prevents us from riding and we'll look for ways to fit a ride in even when it might not make much sense to do so.

In fact this morning I had arranged to bring my bike into my local bike shop for a bit of work. Logically I should have simply put my bike in the back of my pickup and dropped it off then driven into work, but I couldn't bear the thought of driving in. So instead I tripled my commute time by riding to the bike shop (in the opposite direction of work) and figuring out a bus route to get me to work.

I'll reverse the whole thing at the end of the day. Sure, it took me a long time to get here but it was worth it because I managed to fit a morning bike ride in!

Sidebar: You are in the Vancouver area right? I used VeloFix once and they came to my work place and did the service. It was a bit more but well worth it in time and convenience. They did great work also. But if you have a shop free service plan then it is not worth it.

To mrduck826 congrats on starting. It gets addicting. I took today off for a personal sick day and it pains me to not ride. Just keep going and we look forward to hearing how it goes.

I'm in the greater Victoria area, but I'd never even heard of VeloFix. It seems they service the Victoria area as well, so I'll definitely keep that in mind. Thanks for the recommendation!

Congrats! We all needed some motivation to get started, and it didn't take too long for the realization that we could have been doing this sooner for a lot of us.

Congratulations! You're doing the right thing.

It'll probably take a bit of getting used to. Almost surely far less than you think, though.

And you've joined an elite club. You've become one of those who know that life is better on a bicycle.

Congratulations. You have chosen the red pill.

That really great to hear, congrats! Since you already are a rider, I think the biggest challenge is how you get beyond the initial fun and excitement and turn it into a sustainable habit, some might say addiction! Think of it as playing the long game, come here and search the forums for questions, answers and motivation. Keep pedaling and it will come.

Welcome to the ranks!

Welcome to daily commuting!

takenreasy 11-06-14 04:50 PM

Congratulations! You’ve got a really nice commuting distance. Soon it will be a habit that you’ll never quit.
