Footwear

Now that it's getting colder, what type of footwear are you using under (or over) your shoes?

Sorry, couldn't resist the sister thread to Headwear.

I get cold toes on the way in. On the coldest days, I have used the toe warmer packs. Today was 31/32F for my ride in and my toes started getting cold around the halfway point. I wiggle them some, but mostly just suffer. Is there a better solution?

I wear Rocky Gore-Tex socks. They block the wind.

Once it gets consistently below freezing, I switch to wearing wool socks and hiking boots. Keeps my toes warm down to about 15F.

you know you can re-use most chemical warmers, just put them in an airtight plastic bag, they will shut down, then when you need them again just take them out and give them a little air most are good to go again. thicker hand warmers last longer and can be re-used more easily

I've been riding the past week in 6 to 10C wearing Gore Tex socks and Gore Toe Covers on my road shoes. Keeps me warm and dry.

At those temperatures I wear Keen sandals with socks and Louis Garneau shoe covers. I wear those to about 28f or so. Once the temps start getting consistently cold I switch to LL Bean Snow sneakers. They keep my feet warm to about 0f, give or take.

Good hiking boots and BMX-style platform pedals. I escalate from there as the weather gets colder.

At those temps a thick Merino wool sock over a thinner summer sock in regular clipless riding shoes is enough for my toes to keep warm.
