Which of these two tires for commuting on the bad weather days?
I just blew out the sidewall on my old mountain bike tires and need a set for the bad weather days (snow/ice). I'm on a tight budget at the moment, these at under $40.00 a set is about what I can afford.
This one I would expect to be better in snow: Forté Pisgah 26x2.1 Wire Mountain Tire But on ice I'm not sure, this one might have a bigger contact patch, being that they are less aggressive: Forté Dartmoor 26x2.0 Mountain Wire Bead Tire If its not snowy and icy I'm probably riding a road bike. |
Neither will hold a candle to studded tires on ice. Metal studs will dig in and grip while rubber will just slide over the top.
The Pisgah has more aggressive knobs that will handle deeper snow, the Dartmoor will roll better on bare pavement. For snow, use this to make your choice, but for ice you def want studs. |
I've found, though, that unless you do the majority of your riding over snow pack or ice, the studs on your rear tire are going to wear down pretty quick across pavement. I use a knobby in back and studded in the front; the lighter weight on the front tire doesn't wear the studs down, and if the rear wheel goes I can just put a foot down, in a pinch. If that front tire goes, though, all bets are off.

What part of the country are you from Turkey Lurkey? Can I make it to your house on Thanksgiving?
