Has anyone seen flat/matte black fenders?

Figured I'd ask here since we commuters are usually more concerned with having fenders. Has anyone seen any fenders in matte or flat black? My dad just recently got a Trek Pure cruiser-style bike, in flat black, and he would like to have flat black fenders to go with it.

Most plastic fenders I've seen are gloss black. Any ideas?

A lot of the clip-on fenders, like the SKS Beavertail, are a textured black plastic. Not really gloss, but not exactly a matte either. He could paint some aluminum or steel fenders a flat black. I wouldn't paint plastic ones though, they are pretty flexy, and the paint would probably chip off quickly - plasti-dip might not be too bad for that though. Now I kinda want to try that on mine...

Those Townie ones look perfect. Yes the Pure is a 26" wheel, and in fact the design of the bike is very much similar to that of the Electra Townie.

Wonder if those would fit the Pure without much hassle?

*edit* my dad said he thinks the LBS he got the bike from actually ordered the Townie fenders originally, but then the LBS couldn't get them to fit on the Pure. I'm not sure why they wouldn't fit, though.

Something's weird. Trek recommends the Bontrager NCS fenders for the Pure - not much difference other than the single strut pair for the rear - can't really tell how glossy these are.

Those look like gloss black plastic fenders, pretty much the same material as my SKS Raceblades most likely.

Pass-under stays get gunk buildup and over long term they can get corrosion. I would not by these.

I would get these, unscrew everything, and take 20 minutes with some fine sandpaper and remove the glossy surface, then put everything back on.

Just my 2 cent.

Okay I heard from the guy at the LBS why the Electra fenders wouldn't fit. The stays are not adjustable and are made specifically to fit the Electra, so they would not fit the Trek Pure.

I'll mention the possibility of sanding the gloss black ones to my dad. I may try it out on the inside surface of my SKS Raceblades just to see how that would look.

If you dp go that route, 800-1000 grit should do it. Used this on the glossy finish of a guitar neck, worked really well. The trick is the sanding pattern. Be sure to wipe the fenders down between each pass, then when you're done, wipe them with damp cloth then dry cloth & you'll be all set to go.

In the off chance you want to put glossy finish back, there are a number of products that can do that made for plastics, including clear coat spraypaint.

You could always spray the fenders with matte black paint. I wouldn't paint silver fenders because scratches would stand out, but that shouldn't be an issue if painting black fenders.

Well I would have to scuff them up anyway to help the paint stick. And like was said earlier I think the paint would still chip really easily off of plastic.

Oh, that makes sense. I wanted to keep the all matte black stealth look on my commuter too, but I was convinced to buy the chrome ones and the look is kind of growing on me.

Nice, that actually looks like more of a matte chrome, almost aluminum look. What kind are those?

The silver Cascadias are matte, but the black ones are glossy.

You do not need to scuff up the fender before painting. The scuff marks will show up under the new paint. Just clean your fender and apply about three coats of your favorite color. I did mine back in 2009 and they still look good. They have a few scuffs here and there, but that just adds to their character. I don't know why more people don't do it. It isn't that difficult.

Portland Design Works makes some higher end ($) aluminum ones that appear matte. Not sure about size for that bike; biggest fenders are 45mm.

Sanding was not for painting, sanding was to get the matte effect.

Looks nice but they're designed for bikes with 700c tires.

If only us everyday shmoes could make these things in our garage. Would be a whole lot easier to get the exact right thing to fit the need.

Speaking of such, you could get a strap off an old barrel & fabricate one from scratch?
