helmet cameras are also good for recording threats and other conversations for an urban environment.

for country riding, rear cameras are good, but there is also the drivers who do threatening things like pulling out in front of you, and slowing down to time their turn dangerously close in front of you. an HD camera should be able to record the driver's head direction.

Thanks. I was using a GoPro on the back and a Garmin Virb Elite on the front.

I have tried to use the helmet mount and it gives me a stiff neck. It sounds silly but for me the extra weight was bothersome.

Ive been using the Contour HD that I found awhile back on sale at Amazon. I wear it on my Helmet. Of course the one day I get into an accident is the day I forgot to charge it so left it home.
Contour Action Cameras - Official Website

And here is some footage from my youtube channel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9Y4...w7Qq6sHuWLMEow

Only issue with the helmet option is that straps get loose. Which is what you see in some of my videos being shaky.

Those cameras look like they have improved dramatically. I started with one 5 or 6 years ago and it was terrible. Nice price on these as well.

I've seen a few cycling videos on youtube recorded by 'key chain' cameras, but none capturing accidents. (Here's another segment with Captain Dashboard.) These little cameras seem to start around $5 USD and go up from there with increased feature sets, better optics, better firmware, removable/expandable memory, etc. For accident documentation you'd probably want a wide angle lens, either built in or accessory. Sorry, don't know much about quality, how to tell a good one from a bad one, etc. (but this guy seems to).

My ideal camera would be close to the rideye, shown on the second post, but with the added feature of Bluetooth video live feed to a phone, monitor, or better yet, to your Google glasses. So you would have an instant picture of what's going on behind you.

The black box technology although not explain, it could be a good thing to stop recording if you get taken to the hospital or die so the footage don't get erase by the recording looping if the camera is left on.

I definitely would use them, front and back! Specialy after my near death experience with a drunk driver! She didn't stop (hit and run), but was caught by a cop that saw everything. It could or couldn't have help to identify the car, in case the cop wasn't there.

The GoPros and Virb have wifi to a smartphone capabilities. The problem is it's not exactly real time, by that I mean it's delayed a second or so and for me personally, it's way too big of a distraction. I end up looking at the video feed and almost running into a parked car.

The principle issue here being a properly engineered breakaway mount.

It has yet to happen, but claims adjusters would certainly be interested in the footage of it.

Considering that to prove a theft claim on your home or renters policy requires as little proof of ownership as a quick video walkthrough of your place, footage of an incident could be pivotal in the turnaround and assessment of claims.

Almost as good as a rearview mirror. A bit more expensive, lower resolution, and with a slight delay. It's going to put the mirror companies out of business.

I have a GoPro mounted on the front and this one mounted behind (around my seat)
Amazon.com: MeGooDo SJ1000 HD 1080P 12M Sports Helmet Action Waterproof Mini DV Dash Car Camera Cam(Red): Car Electronics

I was quite surprised how much stuff happens behind me that I don't even know....

That's not good! More like a heads up display on your glasses. I have seen glasses advertise that you can see speed, distance and others things, without distracting from the front view. I never seen a video feed like that, except for first pilot view model planes, and those are wrap around goggles.

No substitute for low tech works all the time gadget! God saved my life from that rear coalition (50 mph), but the rear view mirror "take-a-look" was instrumental to get out of the way at the last minute.

In the USA: if you have any interaction with a law enforcement officer on your commute, you should probably announce your little camera is recording (1), (2).

I use one of these velcroed to my helmet. It's light, and functional.

Campark HD 720P Mini Size All Metal Helmet Camera Sport Camcorder ACT20L | eBay

I got mine from a domestic source a couple years ago for about 2X the current price.

But they don't stream while recording, right? You either watch the feed, or you record, but not both. I mean for the Virb Elite; dunno about GoPro.

The 360fly camera is full of potential; if it could be mounted upside down atop a helmet, that give some pretty spectacular imaging.

You can watch while recording, but like I said it's not exactly real time. There is a 1-2 second delay in the feed.

How are you doing that? I cannot find anywhere it says that's possible; do you have specialhardware?

the badge cam police are going to have to wear will be expensive because your taxes will pay for it, so no motivation to make it cheap .

though the actual cost will be a Small % of that.

The Garmin has a screen on the camera to see but it won't do you any good if you are wanting to see what's behind you. The GoPro has an app for your smartphone that syncs via wifi, but it is slow. Trying to view what you are recording as a safety measure is not a good idea IMHO. These screens are designed to give you an idea of what you are capturing, not as a feed. You would need a bigger screen to see anything in any kind of detail and a MAJOR distraction to what you are actually doing...riding a bike.
