Nice cool crisp morning when I stepped out the door, took a minute to get the bike ready and enjoy. The commute was quickly soured as I'm approaching the exit to my neighborhood, a camry makes an aggressive left into my neighborhood. So we're headed at each other for at least 150 ft. as i'm about 5 feet from the first driveway on the street (my right) she swings left at the last minute into the driveway. I braked hard and managed to avoid hitting her by about 1 foot. Shined my headlight directly into her face and nothing, no acknowledgment, apology or anything. As I'm standing there straddling my bike she backs out leaves the neighborhood and heads in the opposite direction. I kept my cool mainly because she had a young child in the back seat, but man that was the closest I've come to being hit. If I had taken a few seconds less getting the bike ready I would've been run over. The rest of the commute was nice and uneventful.

Uneventful and temp just right. Sounds like the wind is going to be issue going home. With the change of the season it's now out of the north west pretty much everyday. During the spring/summer has been out of the south east.

A cool 52F this morning, but sunny and gonna warm up this afternoon. My chain got jammed just after I made a right onto a busier road. I couldn't pedal, but had just enough momentum that I managed to coast to a left turn lane and cross over to a sidewalk and fix it.

Consecutive bicycle commute #116 :

About a 30 mph headwind this morning. Wind is supposed to dramatically pick up today, so if the wind shifts as I expect it to the ride home should be more exciting. At least I took my road bike which is much more wind-friendly than my hybrid.

It was 56 degrees this morning. I wore my jacket thinking it might be a bit chilly out with the wind (hey, they call it a "windbreaker" right?) Big mistake as it was way too warm. 56 degrees can be a little nippy if the humidity is high, but this morning the humidity was quite low. Should have paid more attention to the weather.

I tried partially unzipping the jacket, but the wind kept blowing the zipper the rest of the way down which left the jacket loosely flapping all over the place. I could have stopped and taken it off but my bag was pretty full and I wasn't motivated enough to jam it in, so I just left it zipped all the way up and got drenched in sweat.

Yikes! Next time educate her small child that her mom's a clueless idiot. Mid 50's this morning with a pretty stiff headwind. Winds are supposed to be gusting to 30mph by this evening - hopefully behind me!

KCBikeCommuter 10-12-15 08:23 AM

Mid-60's for the morning commute. I had to modify my route a bit since they are re-paving a portion of my primary route. Otherwise, a nice ride. The ride home could be a different story. It's supposed to be sunny and 78-degrees today, but very windy. 20-30 mph winds with gusts over 40 mph!!! And, of course, it will be a headwind so...

No ride today, there's an hour of daddy daycare required at lunchtime

WOW! Thanks for posting.

25-35 mph sustained winds (head winds) for the entire ride home tonight. Temperature on this morning's ride in was 63; ride home was 55. Talk about a tough ride. 11 miles would usually take me 35 - 40 minutes. Tonight was 53 minutes. I got my workout.

essiemyra 10-13-15 04:51 AM

Another nice uneventful commute to work today. The temp was 48f degrees when I left the house, and there was some fog in a lot of places.

dcb23 10-13-15 05:26 AM

Oh man...a beautiful morning with a tough ride in. 61F / 16C was a dark but pleasant morning.

Here's the hard part: After assembling my brand new repair stand last night, I hoist my bike up only to discover that the rear derailer cable had stopped responding...no idea how this happened and why it happened just at that moment. Turns out it was snapped right at the handlebar shifter. So I'm stuck on a Monday night before work with three gears to choose from up front. Of course I rode in but it was tough on those hills.

Plan is to hit a bike shop on the way home either for a repair or at least a cable and try to repair it myself.

tarwheel 10-13-15 06:25 AM

Dodged a bullet this morning. I mistakenly left my expensive U-lock, cable and keys unlocked at the bike rack when I left work yesterday afternoon. I did this one other time, and someone stole the lock and keys overnight. I got lucky this time, and they were sitting right where I left them when I got to work this morning. It would have been an expensive loss and hassle to replace all that stuff.

The last time this happened I started making a concerted effort to double-check all my gear before I leave work in the afternoon, but my job has been very stressful lately and it's making me absent-minded. Looks like I better refocus. My routine also got thrown off yesterday because a lot more of my coworkers have been bike commuting lately due to the nice weather. I normally lean my bike up against the rack and then fasten my lock and cable to rack before packing up to go, but there were so many other bikes on rack yesterday that I had to lean my bike in another spot, and that threw off my routine just enough to make me forget about the lock.

mgw4jc 10-13-15 06:41 AM

A little warmer at 60F this morning. Some overnight showers made for wet roads, but not enough to kick up any spray. The sunrise was quite nice, but I didn't find a decent vantage point for a picture.

KCBikeCommuter 10-13-15 07:23 AM

A little chilly (46F) when I left the house, but a really nice commute.

bmthom.gis 10-13-15 07:48 AM

I was on the fence this morning when I woke up. By the time I had finished the 1 mile walk with the dogs I had talked myself into going by bike and dealing with the one bottleneck area we have at the moment. One of hte major bridges going into the city is closed down (scheduled for the rest of the month) and the other two (not counting the highway) are getting super backed up, leaving me really with only 1 way to get into the city on a bike (the other one has a sidewalk I have used before, but right now there is a huge pipe on it as they try and pump water from one side of the river to the other). The bike lane on the bridge I ride over is blocked by another big pump, right where traffic bottlenecks. I had to be a bit aggressive getting over into the traffic lane. That was the only downside. The rest of the ride was fantastic.

It showered right before I left, and the sunrise was beautiful. I forgot my helmet and gloves. Temperature is terrific, in the 60s this morning, around 80 this afternoon. I am riding a century not this weekend, but next weekend. In lieu of a 50-60 miler beforehand, I am going to try and bike commute everyday until next wed, then give myself 2 days to rest up. I'm slightly worried about the distance, as the longest ride I have done in the past few weeks was a 40 miler.

arsprod 10-13-15 08:45 AM

53F and windy again. Today it's a crosswind, what a waste of wind energy!

PatrickGSR94 10-13-15 09:40 AM

No ride yesterday because I took the day off for a funeral. I was a little bummed because I would have had a fast ride home with a huge tailwind! Oh well.

After an insane high of 90 yesterday (missed the record by 2 degrees), actual temps outside this morning were lower than expected, and I felt a bit under dressed. I used my new Nashbar bib shorts, a compression shirt under the bib shoulder straps (the straps feel a bit scratchy), and a short sleeve jersey and arm warmers. TWC said upper 50's, bike computer said lower 50's down to 51 in some places. My knees and toes were a little cold when I got to the office.

On another note, FINALLY Strava has added a button for the Commute tag on the mobile app! WOOHOO now I don't have to do it on the web interface after the fact!

Hypno Toad 10-13-15 09:54 AM

Kinda commuted this morning, relocated from the home office to the coffee shop office (located by my favorite LBS). 12 miles with cloudy skies and 43F. Felt good, and it's fun to see the busy bike-commuter routes into the city.

I'm always surprised to see people post that 50F is cold-weather riding. This morning was great, knickers over my padded shorts, wool socks, T-shirt under my PI windbreaker, full-finger gloves, and a cycling cap under my helmet. My friends around town have a game to post the first balaclava sighting of the season... it happened weeks ago on a warmer day than this. I guess cold is in the eyes of the beholder, or something like that.

Darth Lefty 10-13-15 10:07 AM

Fast one today. Sub-27 minutes, might be a personal record. I think it's morale. I planned ahead, did all my prep last night to so there was no harried feeling at home and I still made it out the door on time. I just got some new Novara duds from REI to replace my old ones, some of which were fraying from wear or torn from MTB wrecks.

Since we are obligated to talk about weather when it's changeable, the weather here in Droughtopia is very unseasonably warm. High 60's in the morning and headed for the mid 90's in the afternoon. It might match or beat the record.

HardyWeinberg 10-13-15 10:27 AM

dark and wet but warm (50s) and great.

FalconRider54 10-13-15 10:35 AM

First commute since last Wednesday. Over the weekend I replaced my bottom bracket and put on a new rear tire. What a difference both items made. Foggy ride in this morning. A couple of pseudo right-hooks. I say pseudo because they passed me and then turned right but I didn't have to brake.

timvan_78 10-13-15 12:48 PM

i almost got creamed this AM:
There was a guy stopped at a red light at cornwall Ave. I had the green and was going through the intersection (Cypress Ave) and as I'm in the intersection the guy lurches forward! There were no cars around so he decided not to wait for the red light! I swerved, he just missed me and he slammed on the brakes and backed back up to the stop-line. (What's the point, now, D-bag.) I pointed at the still-red light and lit into him. He shrugged like he knew he f-ed up. Then the light changed and he left. Black accord? BC Plate JDX ??5

I run 2 front blinkys, but now i'm busting out my big one. Sorry if it bothers people but I want to be noticed!

Daniel4 10-13-15 01:56 PM

I thought I was pretty smart to re-cycle an old helmet light by strapping it onto my headtube. Then the lid fell out and I lost my battery pack with three eneloop AAA ni-mH rechargable batteries. Recovered only on of them as the traffic was zipping by.

Anyways all was not lost as I enjoyed the morning live radio the rest of the way with my new radio strapped onto the top tube.

Yikes, glad you are okay. Driving around this past weekend I had numerous closer than I would have liked calls and many WTF are you doing or thinking moments. I don't know what is up with drivers lately.

Bike safe everyone.

Nice ride today, both ways. Fall was in the air during the evening ride. Chilly but not quite jacket weather. Nice not to arrive home dripping in sweat.

Morning ride was actually summer like. Warm and and enough humidity to break a sweat. A little wind but not too much.
