Today was a bit warmer than it should be this time of year... 55F, and drizzly. Which is very pleasant to ride in. It has been about 28F and windy, so I'll take the change in temp.
The commute was really good until I got a quarter of the way to work and my RD cable pulled out of the STI... Or it snapped, I'm not sure which. That of course means that I was stuck in my 11t cog in the back... Riding my 36/11 up the hills on my way to work was rather difficult, but a good challenge. Made me a bit more sweaty. |

Pull the cable until you're in a tolerable gear and put an overhand knot in it. Or tie it to the handle bars and make a rudimentary grip shift.

Both options I never thought of. If I was actually proficient at tying knots, I would give this a try. I think I'm just going to adjust the limit screws and see if I can make it tolerable. Otherwise I will give this an attempt. Thanks!

Did a 11.8 mile commute to make my 2000 miles for the year! Thought I would have to ride till Jan 1 to hit that goal, a mile here and there really adds up! So far switched everything over to the Trek twice this week just to switch it back. Tuesday was the only day with dry roads so far, won't even try it with no fenders. A bit of head wind but overall not bad this week. I did fry this morning with my rain jacket on! Only taking the actually holiday off no others this year so should hit 2100 miles at least, save all my vacation for summer trips!
|
Thick fog this morning made today a more treacherous ride. I could not see the roadway in front of myself, despite my lights. Unseasonably warm, I've been unable to wear the right clothes to prevent sweating. I was close this morning. Maybe I should wear a tri swim suit and tank top...

I was pleasantly surprised this morning, the lightest possible rain rather than what we've had forecast. Construction on the Greenway is complete, a raised section over some drainage from off the hill. It was one of those mornings where due to the weather and holidays I had it to myself for miles at a time. We still think thunderstorms are approaching so I'll have to deal with that on my way home.
After tomorrow I'm done for the year with 211 days of bike commutes, which means as usual I neglected to use all of my PTO. But that's better than not working at all so you won't catch me complaining! |
Foggy this morning. I had a lady who insisted on trying to pass me going down a twisty hill. Since I hit 30-35mph on that downhill, she stayed next to me the whole time. MGIF!

Yep, no commutes for me this week. I'm off all next week which means last Thursday was the last commute of the year for me (hopefully not the last ride of the year, I haven't reached last year's total miles of just over 3,600 yet). Strong storms and tornadoes possible today. I'm leaving the office around lunch here in just a few.

Little wind this morning and not a bad temp hope it's the same on the way home. The wind about has me beat and wanting to drive. Actually having to stop going up hills and resting.. could be from giving blood on Monday.

My last day riding was on Monday. It was a lovely, cool morning. By the evening I felt awful and in the morning the Dr. confirmed that bronchitis is paying me a visit. I hope to commute tomorrow by bike on Christmas as long as my lungs are working better.
|
well I did a 20 mile ride and busted my past record of 20 miles a week. I have done 32 miles in 2 days and love it and over 117 total as of today. I will try to do 200 miles before end of year. Looking for tomorrow to see if I have the time to be able to ride and see how close I get
|
Working over the holidays so i get to ride in and back on pretty much empty roads..same thing next week for New Years too.. weather has been great and took the trails back in the morning (i'm on nights). My holidays will be when everyone else is heading back to work :) The only down side is you have to be extra careful for inattentive drivers, stressed & worried over christmas and not expecting any bike commuter traffic.

Last day riding was Wednesday drove Thursday and Friday. Traveling I have not ridden to work for me this week (I have been OFF, YAY) but it has also been rainy all week as well. I decided to do some running this week while traveling instead of bringing the bike and subjecting it to hundreds of miles on the back of the van in the rain. So far this week 12 miles running and I hope run some more today!
I hope to commute some next week but the rain is making me debate it more than usual. :twitchy: |
Back home from school for break, and decided to do my commute from last summer as an intern. The warm humid weather combined with that route really brought back a lot of good memories from the summer. I'll be doing this commute again next summer for the same internship! Of course, I got a flat on my way back home.
In fact, I'll never forget my first commute ever, where I got a flat from a fishing hook on my ride into work. It was not a good feeling, sweating balls and changing a tube in the middle of a state park when I'd never even successfully completed a commute before. I'll also never forget how even though I was in the middle of a state park at 7:00 am, two or three other bike commuters stopped and made sure I had all of the supplies I needed. |
Slush and ice on the roads this morning and my first ride with studded tires. Wasn't easy by any means but those tires cut right through it. The last little section is a steep hill and was spinning the tire the last 1/4 way up! Going to be worse on the way home. Against the wind and supposed to keep dumping. Oh well I'll take more breaks if I have to.. one thing is for certain I won't let mother nature win.

I was off work all last week, but back at it this week. Humid and 66F this morning with some misting or drizzling happening. Wore shorts and short sleeve top.
I got a bike mount for my phone for Christmas. I started out with it this morning, but then stopped and put it into my trunk as it was drizzling enough that I figured it wasn't good for the phone. I don't suppose I really need the phone accessible, but I'll give it a try, perhaps turn on some tunes. |
Not looking forward to the cold, wet week, but at least I got some nice presents for Christmas. :) Happy New Year everyone.
|
34 degrees F. and misting most of the way to the bus (9 miles) this morning. I even had to ride my brakes on the downhills to avoid outrunning my sightline in the rain and fog. I hate that. I should have worn my contact lenses rather than my glasses. I even wondered at what point it would be better to sit on a spin cycle (or other indoor exercise machine) than to ride my bike. What the heck, I didn't get too wet and (more importantly) didn't get cold.
Our forecast after tomorrow looks gorgeous. |
Ice!! Talk about butt pucker looking down hill which is entire sheet of ice. Just took it slow and the studs stayed hooked up so no real issue's. The only real issue is the sides of the roads isn't cleared off so either have to ride in the middle of the street or battle the snow spray.

Cooler and wetter today. 46F. It was a steady, but light rain at the time I like to leave. I waited about 8 minutes and it let up. The roads were plenty wet, but I didn't really get rained on. I went with tights instead of shorts because I knew the spray would soak my shins and get them pretty cold. Only fail was not wearing my wool socks. My feet were a bit water logged and a little cold by the time I got to work. Weather forecast says high of 74, but rain all day. I'll be surprised if it gets that warm. |
Back in the saddle after a week off. Tired, sluggish, 10lbs heavier....gotta get back into the game. Mild and light rain coming in here in DC area.

Today was likely my last commute of 2015, as we are supposed to get heavy rain all day tomorrow and I'm off work Thursday and Friday. When I woke up this morning, a line of heavy rain was approaching our metro area and I initially figured that I would drive. However, the rain moved through pretty quickly and I remembered that I have a lot of comp time that will turn to sick leave on Dec. 31, so I left for work an hour later than usual. Glad that I waited because it was a very pleasant ride. Roads were still soaking wet and the air extremely humid, but the rain had quit and the skies were clearing by the time I reached work. The temperature felt like it jumped at least 10 degrees during my commute and I had to peel off my vest about halfway to work.
Got an nice affirmation of my visibility while waiting at a traffic light. An older woman in an SUV in the lane beside me rolled down her window and yelled out: "Hey, that's a nice set of lights you have on your bike." It was already daylight at the time, so she would have really been impressed if it had been dark. |

Are you gonna top the magic number of 5,000 commuting miles by the end of the year? You're getting awfully close but the weather has been awful here. At the beginning of December, I figured that I had a good chance of topping 5K if the weather dried out. Hah! It has turned out to be one of wettest Decembers on record here and has rained nearly every day of the month. I have somehow managed to top 700 total miles for the month but that's because I've done a lot of long rides on the weekends. My commuting has been a disaster this month, and it's rained nearly every work day. |
tarwheel i wish that i had some comp time I could have ridden after it moved on 30 minutes to an hour would have been perfect. :innocent:
I was prepping to ride this morning but pouring rain, wind gusts 10-20 mph, and 42F so I just decided to drive. I hope I can make it to my next mileage goal by the end of the year. :twitchy:34 miles to 4700 for the year! |
Big snowstorm last night (still ongoing), limited plowed streets, not fluffy but wind-compacted snow, didn't ride in as I would have just carried the bike the whole way. Looking forward to playing in the snow this evening with the dog. Plowing should be done by tomorrow morning so I should be able to ride in then.
|
Light rain while coming in this morning. My face was cold by the time I got to work...should have worn the face mask. Tailgated by an idiot coming down the hill out of my neighborhood. I forgot that I'm not as important as blue Hondas.
|
Light snow but the roads were clear, still ice on some parking lots though. Temp wasn't too cold yet either. Still getting some weird looks on the road! No one is used to seeing bikes on the rode in this weather. The only bad is the boots I'm wearing must be putting more stress on my knee's and my right one doesn't like it. I think the main thing is the muscle isn't relaxing around it. Grew up on a farm and have been kicked at least once on that knee.

Yesterday morning I waited an extra five minutes and it stopped, but I rode on wet streets. Today it wasn't raining when I left and it looked like it wouldn't start for a bit. And it didn't start for about 35 minutes. My commute is about 50 minutes. The last 3.5 or so miles was in a steady rain. I was totally soaked when I got to the office. I can't remember being this wet when getting to work. Luckily it wasn't too cold at about 60F. I wrung my shirt out in the bathroom and could have filled up my water bottle halfway or so. My shorts seemed pretty dry though. We are under a flood watch until Thursday morning. I very well may be calling my wife for a rain rescue this afternoon. |
well this week has been horrible for commuting
mgw4jc be careful and congrats on the goal.
This week has been horrible for bike commuting. I think i would rather deal with cold than rain. It has rained and rained. Between now and thursday.. Heavy rainshowers with rainfall ranging from 1-2 inches.. 2-4 has already fallen in our area. That is a whole stinking lot of rain. I have a rain coat but I just can not psyche myself up enough to ride in the pouring rain multiple days in a row. (Tip my helmet to the PNW people, I could never live there) I am putting my hope in being able to ride Thursday but I have be smart because some of my extra mileage ways would be affected by the runoff from a local lake. I am sure it is flowing like crazy with all this rain. Maybe I need a fat bike to commute on to "float" over stuff haha |
