They did that because you helped the other guy with the van?
It wasn't a van. One of those small wagons. It looked a lot like the 3rd pic on this page: http://www.zcoches.com/fotos/vw-wagon The guy could've pushed it himself without too much problem. |

you guys are hardmen...ice and freezing and stuff. I used to live in ontario, but now I'm probably getting all soft. lol.
Here's the kid on the way to school (Grade 1) this AM: (The eyeball backpack means nobody can sneak up from behind.) http://i1311.photobucket.com/albums/...psggm7u2dg.jpg My morning commute: 11 miles on the Pugsley took about an hour at -10F - which leads to another reason I love this picture, it's good to know that the trees are blooming, it will come to Minnesota.... eventually. |
Today was the second day in a row that my legs felt really fresh; let's hope that's the case on the ride home...lol. Rain is forecasted for the next couple of days, so todays ride was all about the enjoyment of riding a bicycle. Heck, I even made some coffee to carry along. It's interesting how people come and go on my route. For a year or so, I always saw the same guy every saturday walking in the same place. For a while we waved, or I'd ring my bell. One day I found myself at the top of the hill, at a red light, and he was there too. I took the time to introduce myself; it was really a memorable experience as I found out that he was deaf. I pulled out a piece of paper from my trunk and we wrote our names on a piece of paper, then shook hands. Turns out his name was Gary. I saw Gary for a few more Saturdays after that; we'd wave and smile, then one Saturday he was gone, and I haven't seen him since. Gary has now been replaced by "short dude with bike at the bus stop"....lol. There's a spot on my route where I hop off the MUT, and jump on the road. There's a bus stop at this very spot, and I often see the same guy, with his bike, waiting for the bus. Today we waved and nodded like we usually do; I think I'll stop next time and introduce myself.

Rode home wednesday and it was one of the coolest and worst rides. Met up with a friend from work and then caught up with another bike commuter so we had a train of commuters riding together for a portion of the ride. That was RARE AND VERY COOL for these parts. Then we split up and headed different directions to our houses.
I started hurting in my side down to my groin area. It felt like I had been kicked in the privates. I stopped to breath and tried to decide if i needed to call my wife to come get me. I decided to press on and ride slower. It hurt. When I got home I had to stand there for a while to recover. I am not sure what was wrong but it was cool to ride with other people but it was horrible to feel so alone and in pain. joeyduck take it easy and keep on working on getting better! http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=436433 |
It was 6f/-14c this morning. They had forecast -3f/-19c. The aftn was again sunny and pleasant. 17f/-8c.

Meanwhile in Boston, with temps in the mid-teens and no new snow, the street are opening up and riding is getting more pleasant if you have studs to handle the refrozen ice.
Street parking is still a challenge. Last night.. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=436598 |
It was warm today, -5C!! Didn't have to wear my sweater, balaclava or leather shells on my wool mitts.

We had 5" of snow fall today. I went out for close to 2 hours to ride in it and see how bad the side streets were. They were mostly hardpack and loose snow. The bikepath had been plowed. That surprised me because a lot of the primary arterials hadn't been touched yet. So that was nice. I rode that for a few miles enjoying the frozen scenery along the river. I had the homemade studs on. The ones where I mounted hex head screws to the outer lugs from the outside. It's a 2.5" tire. They do good in any condition, except of course deep snow. But they handle hardpack and/or ice real well. They do well in loose snow as long as its not too deep. The temperature was 33f/1c with snow and drizzle from time to time.

Just at freezing. City is in a bit of an ice situatin this Monday morning. Streets are fine but as I got up to the Washington monument, had to dismount and walk...like an ince rink!

Warmest ride to work in several weeks: 40F.
Foggiest ride ever with visibility only about 100 yards at the beginning, maybe 1/4 mile at the end. All cars passed me safely, so I'm thinking my visibility must have been sufficient, but their taillights would disappear quickly into the soupiness. No actual rain, but my tights, jacket and gloves were all quite damp by the time I got in. Unless we get torrential downpours, I hope to ride all week compared to just 3 times last week. We have a roller coaster of highs forecast this week. M: 60 T: 41 W: 74 T: 48 F: 47 Happy Monday everyone! |
First bike commute in two weeks due to a series of 4 winter storms here. We've still got snow covering yards and snow-plow piles on the sides of the street 5 days after our biggest snowstorm last Wednesday night. Temperatures have been mostly below freezing since then, so very little melting has occurred. I tried to ride on one of the greenways on Saturday and had to turn back after 2 miles because it was just too icy. The snow we got last week was very wet, and turned icy in the freezing temperatures, so it's not like riding through slush. Yesterday we had heavy freezing rain, which would have caused havoc if it had been a work day. There were a lot of wrecks early in the morning even though very few people were out driving. Hopefully the weather will get back closer to normal this week, but it's looking kind of sketchy with more "wintry mix" expected on Thursday.

No ride in this morning - still a lot of slush and ice on the roads from yesterday's "wintry mix".
I did get to ride on Saturday. I'm taking the League's Traffic Skills 101 course as a prerequisite to become a certified instructor. Had a nice 5 mile ride into Lancaster. Riding on city streets is so much easier than riding in the suburbs. I had no issues keeping up with traffic, and even had an urge to filter. After the class, I took mostly the same route home. It was on the ride home that I realized why the ride in had been so nice. A 10mph tailwind which was now a headwind on the all uphill route home. I was beat when I got home. I got honked at for the first time in a while. Some guy didn't like me riding in the center of the right lane on a two-lane one-way street. He had to wait all of 5 seconds before he could pass me. |
On my way home last Friday. Hudson river path, New York City.

@1nterceptor Like that picture!
I'm glad to be done with February - 9 rides at or below 0F. March started just slightly nicer, 6F this morning and nothing but blue skies! Tomorrow will be interesting, forecast for 4 inches of snow, plan to take the Pugsley and the no-roads route. |
Finally back at it. A fairly quick ride in, feeling good.

I felt like cars saw me pretty well. blinky front and headlight and on rear blinky coat, solid seatpost light, and blinky pannier.

just above freezing this am, and sunny!!
Over the weekend i installed a lot of new parts: wheels (vuelta corsa lite), chainrings, cassette, chain, rear brake pads, front tire, RD pulley wheels. I still need to do the final RD barrel adjustment, but it was good enough for the commute. It's like a whole new bike!! :) :) New rear hub is very quiet when coasting--very stealth...(I'll have to call out 'on you left' a bit more than i'm used to.) |
21f/-6c this morning. Getting out of the neighborhood was icy frozen hardpack with some loose stuff thrown in. Main roads were good. The aftn was bright sunshine and 29f/-1c that felt warmer than that. But it melted most of the hardpack in my neighborhood.
Tom'rw they are calling for freezing rain turning into rain with a high in the 40's. Then back to the teens with a chance of more snow on Thursday. I just can't seem to get back on the road tires just yet. |

It never uploaded and I gave up but at almost the exact moment this post appeared. I'm finally now getting 'round to posting mine- at this point redundant but alas here 'tis. :p

This morning it was so foggy that I could only see what is directly in the beam of my headlight. - After work - hot and sunny (80* F)...
|
Just abover freezing. I'm hearing more snow mid day today and perhaps tomorrow. But I have to say, I can taste spring in the air. A few birds singing in the dark and the sun is creeping up...until we set clocks of course.
|
42F and cloudy this morning. I left about 10 minutes earlier than normal and added a couple of miles on a MUP and through a neighborhood. 15 miles total, about 2.5 higher than normal.
The forecast showed chances of showers, but not until about 10am. They came earlier. In the first part of my ride, a few drops hit me here and there and then a light shower dampened me near the end. It didn't really bother me though I'm a little chilled now. Hmm, time for some hot chocolate perhaps. |
30 degrees but dry and clear. The moon had just gone down when I took off, which was too bad as I like riding in moonlight. But it will be up for my ride home tonight. I ran 5 miles yesterday faster than usual and I felt it in my legs this morning, but I had a nice ride. There was a lot of traffic this morning. I think about 5 cars passed me in 9 miles.
|
Uneventful until I was approaching the last traffic light to turn left. I was on a side street about to enter a busy main road. I can see the count down was around 15s and already knew I wasn’t going to make it. But the car behind me thought he could so he speeded past me and lost control. The road that we were on makes a slight right hook before stopping at the lights. The motorist skidded out of the lane and going further to the left spinning almost 90degrees clockwise just as someone was making a right turn into my street. Both cars stopped just in time. The light was still green so the offending car just continued on while I made it to the red light.
|
Went to the basement for my bike this morning. The rear had a flat :notamused:
On the bright side it's better to repair a flat at home than on the road. |
Forecast is for snow and ice this evening, so I drove in.
It's currently raining, so I totally could have ridden. |
Snow came later than expected, I thought we'd have 2 inches on the ground when I left, but it didn't start snowing until I rode out. I'd rather ride on 2 inches of snow, than the first accumulation (slippery). But is was a good fun ride, Pugsley is sure-footed. Snow accumulation is up to ~3 inches and the sun is out now. The big challenge will be the wind on the ride home; 25 mph with 35 mph gusts. It'll be a cross-wind and at times a head wind. Slow ridin'!
|
Ride in this morning was okay, 30 degrees and freezing drizzle. Ride home not looking so good, currently 34 degrees and pouring rain.
|
24f/-4c this morning. The aftn ride was a cold, rainy ride home. 33f/1c. The glacier gloves kept my hands warm and dry. They fit tight but I'm getting used to them. This was only the second time I used them and they did good. The rest of my rain gear held up good. J&G jacket. O2 rainpants, and showers pass touring shoes covers. My ride is 45mins one way and I was as snug as a bug.
