Weather chancy. Scrubbing launch. :-/ The news keeps saying "historic drought" so I took off the fenders months ago, this is the first time since that rain has intersected my ride time. Maybe I'll drive home at lunch and ride back in.

I'm glad to say I have begun my aggressive resting period, it's been okay. This will give me a great opportunity to get some disability paperwork read and filled out this next week.

It seems the surgery went well. I just have a splint on the leg from knee to foot to keep it immobilized and it is held on with a plaster cast and ace/tensor bandages. So hopefully this heals and doesn't give me further problems. I figure this will set my discharge back by a week or two. I'm okay with that as long as I get home before the little gal peeks her head out.

I didn't get my commute back to the rehab center last night, but I got to spend the night in the same ward and room as my first 6.5 weeks. They wanted to monitor the bleeding from my skin donor site since I'm on a seemingly decent dose of warfarin/Coumadin. But the nurses are nice and cuter than anyother place I've been.

I had to ask a friend to gbet the key to my locked drawer and to go and get me some things I needed since this was an unplanned stay and my phone was nearly dead and I wanted to watch shows on the iPad. He kindly arrived with a treat and hot chocolate, it may have been different if he knew the nurse in the recovery room thought his wife was my wife. She also kindly brought me a treat, it was nice her schedule gave her time to take a short walk to visit me, I appreciated it greatly.

The hardest part of my commute this morning was not stopping every few hundred feet to take a picture.

I moved to a home office 6 weeks ago, and I only went to the office once last month. Tomorrow I have a meeting, so I'm riding to the office. I keep thinking about things I can't forget, like my laptop or office keys (I'm always the first one to arrive). Funny how quickly I can forget my routine. I'm sure I'll forget something, it'll be fun to see what I left at home.

Nice (steamy) ride in, 65F and really high humidity. I didn't forget anything, well I forgot one thing... what a giant bag of d____ this guy in the office is. Since our company was sold and split, I've been working from home for a couple weeks. However, by a contract, we are paying rent to keep these office through June. I come in this morning to find 'this guy' had been squatting in the my office. This has been an issue since he started, he wanted my office (windows), but I have no interest in giving it up. We are all leaving this building this summer, so moving offices is really a dumb waste of time. He tried to talk me into moving to a different desk, my response "I'm comfortable in my office and we're paying you rent for the space, so I'm staying". [/rant]

It's warm enough to not be collecting on the streets, but this is the kind of snow that wreaks havoc on the budding trees. I considered riding today, and it might have been fun, but I don't have access to showers at work anymore, and there's no way to ride in this weather without getting dirty. That's my excuse, anyway. Nasty winds and other errands also factored into the decision to take transit today.

that is crazy to see snow in May. I am amazed thanks for the picture..

Yeh I rode to and from Wall Street two days ago around midday and MAN I forgot how crazy traffic is. I took the West Side highway back to avoid that cluster for the return trip. A moron tour bus operator made a right on red and almost took me out too. He was apologetic but man drivers are clueless and impatient.

Today's 6 mile morning commute was beautiful. Cool and sunny, just a perfect spring morning.

It was about 36 degrees F. when I left the house and just thinking about being daylight. I think next week I can start to ditch my Blackburn Flea helmet light, though I leave the generator hub powered head and tail lights on all the time. It's supposed to go up to 70 today so I wore running shoes rather than my hiking boots, resigning myself to cold feet this morning. It's weird how my feet can be cold when the rest of me is warm and sweating.

The forecast for the next week is for nice weather. I'm enjoying it but I fear they'll close down my local forest roads to public entry due to fire danger a lot earlier than usual. Maybe if I take off my fenders for the summer it will start raining again!

laxster 05-07-15 11:53 AM

Week #1 of bike commuting, and wish I had started doing it sooner since I've only been living 6 miles from work for the past 2 years! Today it was lightly raining this morning with forecasts of 80-90% thunderstorms between 4-6.

I'm kicking myself now because had I waited 15-20 minutes, I could've biked to work without rain -- and the thunderstorms when I normally go home have decreased to a 40% chance. Sitting in traffic and waiting at so many stoplights reminded me how much more I prefer my new cycling commute -- and the endorphin high is a great way to start the day!

I know I'll be biking to work tomorrow. I can't wait!

noglider 05-07-15 12:52 PM

laxster, that's great. I keep an entire set of spare clothes at work in case I get drenched. I find when I only get a little wet, I don't mind.

esmith2039 05-08-15 04:56 AM

Light rain this morning and very little wind. Threw on a poncho and shopping bags over my shoes and worked out great. Need to get some more ponchos and plastic booties (bags barely held up) for the future. Definitely getting fenders though!! Those muddy trails of river you don't notice till you look in the mirror are enough justification!

essiemyra 05-08-15 05:04 AM

It was a nice uneventful ride to work today.

ericy 05-08-15 06:06 AM

Uneventful ride for me as well this morning. It was 60 degrees when I got up, which means no more extra layers :D. I forgot to turn on the GPS on the phone before I left, so I don't know whether I set any personal records in Strava.

Gradually getting back into form - each time I ride it gets a little easier and I go a little faster.

tarwheel 05-08-15 06:28 AM

Beautiful day despite forecasts for a tropical depression, which fortunately has stayed further off the coast than expected. However, I made the call to drive last night and slept in. My legs needed a break after riding 260 miles over the past week. Tomorrow I'm riding a shakedown for an upcoming bike tour and wanted to keep my legs somewhat fresh as I'll be riding my touring bike loaded with gear about 45-50 miles.

You put some serious miles in. I tend to not ride at except for the commute. But that's partly because I run also.

Had to take the car for an oil change an inspection this morning. Drove to the dealer, pulled the bike out, checked in, and rode the 4 miles to the office. At lunch I'll ride back, get the car, drive home because my wife needs it this afternoon, she'll drive me back to the office with my bike (not enough time to ride back), and drop me off. Then I'll ride home after work.

tarwheel 05-08-15 07:27 AM

My riding is almost evenly divided between commuting and recreational/touring. I had to quit running years ago due to injuries, so cycling is my main exercise, although I also do a lot of walking.

BTW, I passed the 8th anniversary of when I started bike commuting last week. I bike commuted about 31,500 miles over that period.

laxster 05-08-15 07:42 AM

Was nice to hop on the bike again today after yesterday's drive.

However, some asshat in a minivan behind me as I was crossing a divided highway at an intersection decided to lay on his horn, and then proceeded to zoom around me in the middle of the intersection! :notamused:

I'm right there with you, coming up on my 5 year anniversary for this job and 2 years commuting part time before that for about 25,000 total commuting miles. The funny thing is it doesn't feel like that many miles, just relatively short rides adding up day after day. 1,064 round trips those five years, they get kind of unremarkable.

bmthom.gis 05-08-15 08:55 AM

I skipped the bike today. I did a very spirited group ride last night, and between that and the increased frequency of commuting, my legs were telling me they needed a break. I'll take a few walks around the city throughout the day to get up and moving.

I successfully patched my first flat! (I think.) Started inflating the tire---getting excited to commute again for the first time since Tuesday---and the tube poked through the sidewall at 40 PSI. :notamused:

I think the tires are just old and brittle (I'm guessing they are from when my dad was riding the bike last---probably a decade?). Or did I mess up the repair?

FalconRider54 05-08-15 10:44 AM

Got three commutes in this week. Could have done 5 if not for my daughter's college graduation ceremonies. I'll take that trade-off any day. On Monday I was loading the bike for the commute home when I noticed my front tire was flat. Fortunately I had a spare tube and could get on the road quickly. Have finally figured out my route to the new office.

Yeah for patching! It feels good once you figure out what you can do and not need to rely on other people, slowly you will amass a great set of bike repair skills to help keep you bike(s) rolling and more importantly stopping.

Without a photo I suspect it is an old tire. Did it rip the sidewall and go between the tread and the bead? Pictures should easily solve it here.

If I remember correctly, that's exactly what happened. I'll check it out and maybe post a pic. Thanks, man!

Woohoo finally got in 3 commutes this week for the first time since early December! And yesterday I had my fastest commute ever with a tailwind, making the 15.5 miles in 1 hour flat (moving time)!

Ky_Rider 05-08-15 12:52 PM

Very pleasant commute into work. Long sleeves and shorts. Left about 6:00 AM and barely needed my headlight. May is one of my favorite months to commute. The ride home was very warm with temps in the 80's! Felt like summer. 30 mile round trip.

Same here, I'm at the point where I now use all lights on flashing modes for both commutes, even when leaving the house at 6 AM. That makes them last quite awhile between needing to be recharged.

I usually just lurk around these forums although I've been commuting 3 days /week (I work 20 miles from home) when the weather is desirable (i.e. not snowing or freezing downpour). Today was my first day off since Christmas, so I had no official commute, but my 10y/o had an half day today and wanted to ride her bike to school this morning. She had a smile on her face the whole ride(10miles on rural roads), until we arrived and it was time to lock it up (I bet many of you have felt this way at least once). I rode home, took a nap and started cleaning out my garage before I knew it I had to be back at the school. Once school let out, she came running out with a big smile on her face, helmet on, backpack chest and waist straps on, and a freshly filled water bottle in her hand...She looked over to me and said "LET'S GO!"

Rode across town to get some ice cream (her payment for helping me bleed the brakes on my car earlier this week), then per her request we hopped on the rail trail for about 15 miles, and eventually made our way back home. She put in about 40 miles total today, and she's talking about riding even further tomorrow. Ah, if only I had the energy of a 10 year old...

omg how ADORABLE.

reading everyone's stories are just melting my heart. the edmonton photo with the snow in May is just wild but i know about this from hearing about it from my hubs who grew up in Edmonton until age 12 or so.

what can i say. it's great. i get to ride everyday to work and see lots of others riding too. normalizing cycling is just awesome to see happen. in just my short 4 years of commuting it's changed tons.

got stuck today behind two guys going ultra slow coming off the Brooklyn bridge in the AM, the first on a citibike. at first i was like uh why are they so slow? then i just relaxed and rode behind the two. i thought the guy in front of me would pass, but he didn't. i could tell they were tentative riders.

i'm super glad to see more people out and about. one of these days i'm thinking of running into work. maybe when the bike challenge to work is over and when it's not too hot. a coworker who lived a mile closer (3.5 miles compared to my 4.5 miles) used to run and bike all the time and i still think about it to this day - like, i gotta do that.

hah.

prasanth 05-08-15 07:55 PM

My apologies to peers here for not keeping every day logs.
Commuted all week, nothing much to brag about. Things are worming up a bit. It looks like Philly has only two seasons. Winter and Summer!
Cheers.
