It is nice but I don't know why they didn't make the change runs and shower rooms bigger.

For a hermit like me anything with more than four people. is a gong show.

My wife does Monday and Friday Zumba there already and I try to go Thursdays for a swim with a friend.

We try to sneak a weekend skate or family swim in also.

Now I'll just amble over once or twice a week for a swim which my core and mental health needs.

How how were the swim lessons last week?

Not much chance of keeping the bike cleanat this time of year. :(

Great pics everyone.

6F / -3C here in DC with a light snow coming down. A quiet wind-free ride in.

noglider 01-14-15 07:15 AM

I got my wish yesterday: the wind direction remained constant. I had a very strong tailwind coming home last night. The temperature fell over the day, but it barely mattered. I rode really really hard, and only my hands got a little cold. My feet only got cool. The rest of me got very hot. With the tail wind and my added effort, I really flew.

For no particular reason, I brought my battery powered headlight and compared it with my Dynamo powered light. The latter won. It's a Philips Saferide. Very nice beam shape. The battery light is a B&M Eyc IQ2.

Local news stations were warning about the freezing rain coming early Wednesday morning. A couple of guys at work were asking if I would ride in this morning. Some schools and daycare facilities announced a 2 hour delay.

Maybe it was worse north of me or in the higher elevations, but it was a normal morning for me. I felt a few drops when I retrieved the paper at 5am, but nothing on the ride. It was 30F which has been the norm around here for the mornings.

It looks to be good for the rest of the week too. Happy Commuting!

acidfast7 01-14-15 08:19 AM

Windy with ice/slush on the ground!

Not so common here in NE England!

dramiscram 01-14-15 08:29 AM

Only my second commute of the year. cold morning -24°c but no Wind and sunny.

Hypno Toad 01-14-15 08:32 AM

What a difference a day makes! Today 18F, sunny with a light dusting of snow (yesterday was -13F). Felt like I was flying this morning, maybe cause I was 10 lbs lighter without all the clothes for sub-zero temps.

KCBikeCommuter 01-14-15 08:52 AM

There was a bit more headwind than I expected this morning, but not too bad... although when I looked at the time I realized it was not a fast commute by any means 19F (-7C), so the temperatures are getting better and supposed to keep climbing through the weekend!

Yeah, and I don't even try! I figure eventually it'll rain and wash the crap off.

6F this morning with very little wind (for a change). Almost got nailed by an SUV. My experience is that people who drive big vehicles need extra driver training because they seem to have little concept of where they sit on the road. I was coming down a downtown street with cars parked both sides. The middle part of the road was cleared of ice but the sides weren't. Apparently this SUV driver (I'm trying not to generalize) thought it was more important that she not put her right-hand wheels in the ice than forcing me into it. And perish the thought that she might slow down or even stop to let me pass. Without studs I'm sure I would have gone down and she'd likely have run over my head. My fault for assuming drivers have any compassion, courtesy, or common sense. Phew, rant over

The only things I clean in the winter: chain and rotors. And the chain is more like add more T-9, and only clean a couple times over the winter. It just doesn't last.

Also, to the rant about your experience with the SUV. I have to agree, over-sized vehicle and drivers with little knowledge of their vehicle scale. I've had the exact same experience, WAY too close pass by huge SUV, 'cause god forbid they put an SUV tire on the ice to yield room to the bike.

i drove ... again

mgw4jc We had freezing rain last night here. (north of ya) It covered the cars and roads. this was just minutes after leaving my house. there is a white van who somehow rolled up onto a minivan who was parked a good bit off the road. hope and pray everyone was okay. it was a good reminder to me to slow down and take my time.

I was slipping on the bridges in the car. I am kinda glad I drove because I would hate to go down on some black ice. plus with a high of 32 doesnt look like fun riding weather.

spivonious 01-14-15 10:31 AM

It was "buzz the cyclist" day in Lancaster. First a tow truck passed at speed with his mirror roughly 1' from my head. Then a municipal pickup truck gunned it to get around me just as I was moving out to avoid the door zone.

Temperature was 19F when I left, but very light winds made it much more enjoyable than yesterday. I've finally figured out a way to keep my toes warm in this weather: nice thick wool socks and very loosely-tied sneakers. My fingers still get cold for the first few miles until my core warms up enough to let the blood flow back down.

Still a lot of ice in spots, but that should all go away this weekend when we get some nice California air and highs reach the mid 40s.

timvan_78 01-14-15 11:19 AM

I'm fighting a cold so i drove today. :(

joeyduck: I'll have my second swimming lesson tonight--I didn't drown during the first one, so that's good. Right now I can generally 'not-die' but I'm hoping to learn how to actually swim.

Hypno Toad 01-14-15 11:34 AM

Finally.... finally was able to edit and post this video from Monday night. Warning, my loud voice give some very clear commentary on my feelings about this driver's lack understanding of traffic signals.

.be
I normally avoid this crossing and route, but needed to stop at the grocery store on the way home... This is one of two intersections like this within .5 miles. Both are very stressful, you can never trust the lights.

joeyduck 01-14-15 12:25 PM

timvan_78. That is all you can do sometimes. I know my mom always regretted never learning to swim and she therefore produced three competitive swimmers. Where are your lessons?

My son and I have been getting a nice phlegmy cough the last few days. I made my wife drive him today.

Last night was a nice commute. I peeked outside at 4:40 and was amazed how bright it was out. I had a nice commute and got my son and headed home. At one intersection that is off center I had a car come alongside me and not maliciously force me into the door zone. I am glad I was alert and had enough space as a lady opened her door. I let out a really loud wooh to which she responded with an equally loud and startled wooh. She pulled her door in and I missed it. But it was the closest to being doored I think I have been.

This morning produced freezing fog and I opted to put my studded tires on and not take my son. As I changed my tires the fog ice was thick and settling on everything. My pavers in my front walk were slippery. But then it warmed up in the ten minutes I got dressed and ice wasn't a concern. But I enjoyed the nice hum of studs.

I got to go in late this morning, and wow I forgot how pretty my commute is when I can actually see it. There was a nice sunrise, and when I topped the ridge I saw the Cascade skyline with the sun behind it. It may be dark on my way home, but I'll still probably take a longer route. Too nice of weather (30 degrees but clear this morning) not to.

scoatw 01-14-15 04:07 PM

5f/-15c this morning. I've still got about a third of my commute that is frozen and icy, the rest is all dry roads. Expecting warmer temps in the next few days to melt all this off so I can switch back to the road tires. The afternoon was 21f/-6c.

If you can store your bike at room temperature. Clean it outside by dumping a gallon jug of warm/hot water to rinse it off then store it inside to dry completely. Don't do it and store it in these frigid temps, you want it dry off completely. Once the temps get back up to the 50'sf/12c then you can go back to using soap and water and doing a good cleaning. But just rinsing the gunk off is good enough for me during winter.

I second the feeling! I am an early riser so I miss most sunrises on the way in, but when I do see them I'm always blown away.

Just at freezing, no wind.

And it's dirty tires, mark up the hallway in my condo season. Actually carried my bike down the hall this morning so as to avoid leaving a trail of white.

essiemyra 01-15-15 06:14 AM

The temp was a chilly 25f degrees when I left the house this morning, for a nice commute today.

mgw4jc 01-15-15 07:39 AM

I wish I had left a little early today so I could have stopped for some pictures. We had a freezing fog that looked pretty cool across some fields. In a couple of spots the visibility was less than a quarter mile. I watched car lights fade quickly in front of me. My visibility must be good enough as all cars passed safely enough.

It wasn't terribly cold, just about 30F.
I didn't get frost bitten, but I got frost mitten. Ha!

Warmer temps tomorrow and over the weekend. Looking forward to that!

I'm impressed! I'm looking to upgrade, my old Hero 2 is way past it's prime. Thanks for posting!

Ky_Rider 01-15-15 09:07 AM

Chilly 27 F and clear on this mornings commute. I thought I overdressed with 5 layers on my upper body, but I was comfortable the whole way. I just opened my jacket a bit as I warmed up. It's now snowing as I sit here at work.

spivonious 01-15-15 09:45 AM

Wow, that camera rolled about 800 times. :)

My ride in was better than yesterday (no tow truck buzzes) and a bit warmer than it has been this week. Thermometer read 26F when I left, with a bit of a headwind (10mph) out of the northwest.

My bike feels slow. I'm not sure if it's just my legs being tired, or if I need to do some maintenance on the hubs. I've done nothing to them for two years and have about 5000 miles of all-weather riding.

joeyduck 01-15-15 10:49 AM

Like spivonious I have been feeling extra slow. This morning I know I was slower on the flats. I couldn't get the legs going. I was hauling an extra pannier full of old laptops I planned to repair but finally recycled. I am also fighting a cold and have that sore throat and general fatigue that only time will heal. Also my studded tires and lack of drivetrain maintenance doesn't help.

The commute was fine.I got an awesome sunrise. Saw a seal in the river and watched him for a bit.

Last night was nice. I hurried to get a package from the post office. I was so excited since I wasn't expecting anything. But alas I was disappointed, I forgot I ordered checks. The ride was nice and quite though.

Darth Lefty 01-15-15 12:30 PM

Only a one-way commute in today. Tule fog.

noglider 01-15-15 01:17 PM

I started my job on December 2, 2014. Today is the first day I rode in for a second time in a given week, so that's progress. The temperature was about 28ºF when I set out, so I figured it would feel warmish, compared with previous days. The reported wind speed was 5-10 mph. That was a lie. I should really not trust the reported wind speeds, because the readings come from Central Park, in the middle of the island, and I ride along the river's edge. Once again, I faced strong headwinds, though weaker than Tuesday's winds. My feet got so cold they hurt. At lunch, I bought some duct tape, and I'll be wrapping the toes of my shoes.

I wonder where Garmin gets its weather reports. I see my ride is recorded as being 25ºF, and that may be closer to the truth. It also says 4 mph wind. No way.
