We both have "boo-boos" on our knees pretty sure his will heal faster than mine.  s'mores made him forget about the wreck. Overall a great day of riding.

Very nice. I'm jealous.

I rolled my left ankle running this morning. It hurt, but I was able to make it back home. Biking was fine, but I knew I shouldn't try to unclip my left foot as that twisting motion would be bad. I made it to work by only pulling my right foot out. When I got to work, I took my foot out of the shoe and twisted the shoe off with my hands. Hopefully a little rest will help it out.

Light, steady rain - better than predicted thunderstorms. We need the rain and my bike needs the wash. A fellow commuter pulled up next to me at an intersection. He had a very nice, hi-tech bike and was all kitted out. I turned and said "good morning," he didn't look at me then grunted and rode off in a huff. A few miles later I saw him under an awning fixing a flat - karma's a *****

tarwheel 09-09-15 07:49 AM

Our forecasters are going berserk here lately. When I checked the forecast this morning, they were calling for a 20% chance of spotty rain, so I rode today with no qualms. Now they have changed to forecast to 50% chance of thunderstorms. Oh well, thunderstorms can crop up just about any time, any day around here when it's hot and humid like this.

KCBikeCommuter 09-09-15 08:15 AM

Alarm clock was supposed to go off at 5:15am. Not sure what happened, but I finally woke up around 6:15am. Argh!!!

Ok, so I'm going to be late to work, but decided to go ahead and ride anyway. As it turns out... it was a nice ride. Still a bit humid, but very nice temperatures. Cold front comes through tomorrow which should put our high temps in the low to mid 70's for a few days! Looking forward to it!

Last week was blahhh. Only got in one commute on Tuesday, then felt crappy the rest of the week. Unfortunately I once again ended a month with fewer miles than the same month last year (August).

Saturday I was supposed to lead a group ride but had no takers, so did the ride solo mio on my newly-completed Marin bike, and it worked out great. I may ride it to work one of these days. Later that day I also ran an errand to the hardware store with it.

Monday was the local club's Labor Day ride, visiting a bunch of historic music locations in Memphis like Sun Studio and Stax Records. I rode from my house to the ride start (18 miles), did the ride, then headed back before the ride end, for a total of 61 miles. Could have made it a metric century if I had rode around the block or something, but I couldn't turn the pedal another revolution by the time I got home. Had some nasty Charlie Horse leg cramps, too, despite me eating and drinking quite a bit along the way.

So Tuesday I did not commute since I was still recovering from Monday. Today I rode in, with fenders and everything. Chance of rain this afternoon, hopefully it won't be too heavy or lightning or anything.

Was on vacation most of last week so yesterday was my first ride in a week. Went smoothly. Today again riding in the dark but wore a light reflective safety jacket since it was 48*. Got trained on the truck route into town. The road is narrow with no shoulder so I waited 11 minutes for this slow train and then let the line up of cars go by before heading back out. Made it to a choke point where two gravel driveways meet the road and has pushed gravel piles a couple feet into the road. Other lane is still backed with cars and as I was moving over to avoid the gravel and take the lane a pick up truck squeezed in between me and the other lane. He was so close I reached out and smacked his truck. Not sure how his mirror missed me. Caught him at the next light just when it turned green. He was rolling down his window to say something. I rode by and called him an unfriendly name and continued on through the light and he turned left. No idea what he said or wanted to say to me for hitting his truck. He's a vendor we do a little business with so I'll be talking to our maintenance guys about not using his service in the future.

Made my goal of 1,000 miles by Aug 31st. I got a late start this summer. Next goal is 500 more by the end of October.

1st day of school. Did not accompany the older on his ride to 1st day of high school. Main concern there is how many teenagers are driving to school for the 1st time and don't have a grasp on staying in their lane. Went w/ the younger on the 1st day of her last yr of grade school. Same old same old there, lots of parents hand-delivering precious cargo w/o regard to other people's kids.

Finally, massive gridlock at a middle school near my office, just great to ride around.

Oh yes, back on CF road bike after 2 wks of rain. Flew! 2mph faster than steel roadie (w/ handlebar bag, fenders, 10 extra pounds of bike)

groovestew 09-09-15 11:11 AM

cool, damp, and foggy. Ran lights for the first time since early spring due to the fog, but when I got to the office, I discovered my tail light wasn't working anymore.

mgw4jc 09-10-15 06:19 AM

Muggy morning: 72F w/ 70 dew point and 94% humidity.

I actually spoke to other cyclists on my ride in today. I rarely see other cyclists, and they are usually recreational and going the other direction. But today a couple (male & female) passed me on one downhill stretch. I caught them on the the next uphill and they asked if I was headed to work, what my route and mileage was, etc. Then they were stopping for a minute and I continued on. It was nice to chat with someone for a little bit there.

Light sprinkles this morning. Cool!

96 and counting?

Ride home I was trained again for about ten minutes. Train is done, I wait for a few semi's to cross and then the rain hit. Started pouring and just to spice things up, pea sized hail is mixed in. One big cloud, took me a few miles to get past it. Pretty much dried out by the time I made it home, except the shoes which are probably still wet.

Last year I was shooting to hit 100 consecutive days when we had a blizzard on day 94. I still attempted to ride, but the snow was so deep (not yet plowed) that it took me nearly an hour to go 2.5 miles. I had left the house early that morning anticipating the weather, but it slowed me down more than I expected. I could have slogged on the remaining 6.5 miles, but I realized at my current pace it would have been 10 AM before I made it to work. I didn't feel like trying to explain to my boss why I showed up at a client's office 2 hours late, so with my tail between my legs I rode back home and drove my truck. I wasn't happy to get that close to my goal and get thwarted.

This year I started my commute streak a couple months earlier. I'm not expecting a blizzard in early September, so barring something unusual I should be able to easily hit 100+ consecutive days. :)

A really strange thing that I've noticed about that: when you're counting down, the commutes somehow get harder and the pressure builds up. Even though the previous 95 days were just care-free rides that you thought nothing of, the last 5 the pressure and uncertainty builds. The only way out is just ride and don't think about it.

arsprod 09-10-15 09:13 AM

I don't know if it was the cool temps (60F) but I was on it this morning - fast for me. At least it felt that way until I saw I only got to the office about 4 minutes earlier than usual... sigh

Yep. :)

Wednesday is the day I hit magic 100. Then I'll just see how long I can keep the streak going. So far this year I've only driven to work 23 times, and most of that was back in February during the most brutal part of the winter.

Today my son has a school golf tournament. The bus is leaving from the high school at 1:45, however he still attends middle school. For any middle school kids playing on the high school team, it is the parent's responsibility to transport them from the middle school to the high school.

My wife's work schedule isn't very flexible to allow her to pick him up and take him over to the high school, so I said I would take care of it. However, I didn't want to drive to work and wreck my streak.

So early this morning I put his golf clubs and my bike in my truck, then drove to his school. I parked my truck, then rode my bike to work (7 miles). I got to work early so I could take a little extra time this afternoon and still maintain my billable hours. My son rode the bus to school at his normal time. Around 12:45 I will ride back to his school (7 more miles), put my bike back in the truck and take him and his clubs to the high school. After dropping him off, I'll drive to my house and park my truck, then ride my bike back to work (8 miles.) I'll finish my work day and then ride home (8 more miles) for a total of about 30 miles.

I explained my plan to my wife. She said, "Why don't you just drive today? It would make things a lot easier for you."

On day 96? Are you kidding me? I'll ride through a tornado if I have to.

timvan_78 09-10-15 10:19 AM

nice ride this AM. I hate riding directly into a sunrise because I don't know if cars behind me can see me at all.
Weather is perfect for riding though!

Wolfhaven 09-10-15 10:26 AM

My wife does a similar thing. My goal was 1,000 miles and I was pedaling down the road at mile 999 and she pulled up in her car and asked if I wanted a ride... Seriously? WTH? She's done it before and I've told her if I am pedaling down the road I will never, ever quit and want a ride.

PatrickGSR94 09-10-15 10:32 AM

Once again I expected rain on me going home yesterday, and got nothing.

We had plenty of rain during the afternoon yesterday while I was at work. And I correctly decided to put the fenders on the bike the night before. It was plenty wet when I left the office, and there was water dripping from trees everywhere (pseudo rain haha), but it never did actually rain on me during the commute home. I even put my phone in a bag and went sans socks in anticipation of getting soaked, but it never happened.

I was glad to have the fenders, though, with all the water on the ground. So far this year I still have yet to do an actual commute in a real rain shower.

caloso 09-10-15 10:53 AM

Hustled home in order to have a chance to ride with my daughter over to her soccer practice. Nope, got the polite brush-off. She was planning to meet her teammate a few blocks away and they would ride together. See you later, Dad!

spivonious 09-10-15 02:27 PM

It's been pouring for the last 6-7 hours. Luckily, the radar shows a nice break in the rain that should be over me right around the time I leave work. :)

Guys, on my ride to work this morning, I spotted what I believe to be a the cycling equivalent of a unicorn where I live. I came upon ~40ish man wearing jeans, t-shirt and regular shoes, riding an old (but in good working order) completely stock 60s/70's black Peugot to work. No helmet and no pretentiousness. He was the embodiment of what cycling needs to strive for.

no motor? 09-10-15 03:34 PM

A nice cool commute this morning. It was certainly more relaxing than the right angle turn I made last night while getting a drink of water and discovered a skunk between me and the hedge a few short feet away. Fortunately I wasn't that scary to him and didn't get sprayed.

tarwheel 09-11-15 06:18 AM

I needed my car at work yesterday, so wasn't able to bike commute, and I'm glad I didn't. Despite the forecast for 20% chance of rain, we had thunderstorms that started during my usual commute time and continued for hours. I have been pretty lucky so far this week, as it has rained almost every day but I haven't gotten caught in it yet. However, I still have to get home this afternoon, so I have my fingers crossed.

Leaving on a week-long vacation tomorrow morning, so today is my last commute for a while. Hopefully our late summer hot spell will have passed by the time I return. The weather has been miserably hot and humid here the past two weeks.

Four minutes faster is actually pretty significant, unless your commute is like 2 hours long or something.

You could just be the creepy, follow 20 feet behind them dad.

My wife texted me just before 5 yesterday asking if I had looked at the radar. I had not since around lunch. I was already outside when I got the text and just looked up to the sky. "Hmm, dark clouds." I looked in the direction I was heading: blue sky. But the clouds were heading that way. My wife called and offered to rescue me. I said I can ride even if it rains.

I had a tail wind to start as I was heading in the same direction as the storm (east), but just ahead of it. Then I turned north. The cross-wind slowed me down, and some rain drops started. Then a deluge started. I was still about 5 miles from home. Visibility was my main concern - both of seeing and being seen. I turned into a driveway of a house that is surrounded by tall, mature trees. I was somewhat protected, but then saw a free-standing carport and decided to wait it out there. It came down hard for about 15 minutes. I texted my wife telling her where I was. Then, I took a selfie.

If you like bike commuting
And getting caught in the rain...

Here is what passed over me.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=476542

It let up and I rode on home. It stopped before I was home.

Humid and warm but nice ride in this morning. I believe there is a cool down happening this weekend.

KCBikeCommuter 09-11-15 07:06 AM

We picked up about 4.5 inches of rain overnight, but the roads were nearly dry by the time I rode in this morning. Nice tail wind too! :thumb:

PatrickGSR94 09-11-15 07:42 AM

ughhhh hating myself right now. I brought my utility bike to work on the car yesterday with intent to ride it home (to try it out on a commute), then ride back this morning. But I forgot my bike shoes (15 mile hilly commute would suck with my office shoes), and then this morning I couldn't get out of bed early enough.

So I have ended the week with one commute only on Wednesday. Sucks, I'm doing way worse than I was this time last year. :(

*edit* okay well I'm about 350 miles above my commuting total compared to this time last year, and a couple hundred above my annual total miles. But still, this time last year I went 2 or 3 months without missing a single commute.

Well thanks, and no it's only a ~50 min ride. Today I had a doc's appointment which meant totally different and longer route. It was great (the ride not the doc's appt)

spivonious 09-11-15 09:13 AM

Radar said it had stopped raining. It hadn't. ;)

Arrived home a few pounds heavier, but with a nice clean bike.

Beautiful weather this morning. No humidity and mid 60s. Even a right-hook by a school bus couldn't break my smile.

groovestew 09-11-15 11:24 AM

My plan today was to work from home and go for a 45-minute ride prior, but I checked my email and found a note from the boss implying that I should be at the office today. Fine with me, still get a bike ride in!

After rounding a slow corner, I suddenly heard the dreaded "pfffffffffffffffff" sound. That's the first time I've ever had a flat on the way into work. Plenty on the way home, but first for on the way in. Lost about 15 minutes. Whatev. It's a beautiful day in Edmonton, wish I could ride all day.

timvan_78 09-11-15 02:54 PM

awesome. Cool in the AM just at dawn but I overdressed and was soon hot.
complemented some dude on his AC/DC cycling jersey.

Almost finished my garage/bike/storage solution last night: 6 velo-hinges for the bikes, pulley hoist for the tandem, kids bikes against the wall.
