I've seen the kick scooters and their electric brethren used in urban environments but that was the first time I saw one on a scenic MUP like the Mt. Vernon Trail.

The electric unicycle is cute. With a 12 mph max speed, it fits fine on the MUP as well as city sidewalks. However, for the price of one I'd rather get a regular unicycle. Also, the self-balancing feature only works front-back - still have to develop side-side balance.

If a fixie is supposed to be great for building up my cycling muscles, wouldn't a unicycle be even better? ;) In the winter (granted, our winters are mild) a unicycle with studded tire might actually be safer to ride on our icy sidewalks, than to walk on them. :)

Canada geese are no fun! I did not know they bite, but around here if you find Canada geese living in an area, you also find Goose Poop Alley and you do not want to get off your bike at all!

still shaking my head on this...

great ride this morning.

I stopped at Bojangles and tried to order a biscuit for me and few coworkers. They said that they could not serve me through drive thru. I had to had to be on a vehicle and I said I was. They said motorized. I said I have been served at this restaurant through the drive thru before would you like me to take my business elsewhere? They come back was that two egg and cheese biscuits.

I pull up to the window to pay and the manager comes over and says that I cannot come through on bike. I said where does it say that? I just see a sign that says drive through. He says it is dangerous for his employees for me to be on my bike in the drive through. I said how? He said a person on bike could reach through the window and grab cash and get away by bike. He says they have many customers who come by bike and they park their bikes on the other side near the newspaper dispenser. I said is there a bike rack there? No he says. Can I lock my bike to the newspaper dispenser? No they just lean them over there. I said I am not leaning my bike over there. If you install a bike rack so I can lock my bike up I would. He says I am not installing a bike rack. He said we can also just refuse you service. :twitchy::notamused:

Working from home today, but "commuted" 18km beforehand anyway. Lovely ride before the breezes picked up.

I did forgot to mention the lady I scared on the MUP yesterday. I came up behind two ladies who were chatting and walking in the middle of the path. I said, "On your left," and although subtle, it appeared they moved over a bit. I saw enough room and started to pass. As I did, I said, "Morning."

"Aaa!" was her reply. I continued on without saying anything. She said something about "you scared me." But I was too far away by then to reply. Apparently she never heard the "On your left."

I saw deer in the same area on the MUP again today. That's 3 days in a row for deer somewhere on my route.

Well I do have many oddities...

I've had to yell pretty loud to get some people's attention. Seems the mo is to immerse yourself in a world other than you're in.

Incredible! Do they refuse service to motorcycles too? They could get away more quickly.

And what's even crazier? You didn't get the cajun filet biscuit?!?!

It's a challenge not to challenge myself, if you know what I mean. I feel macho when I climb, and I'm proud that I can climb faster than most young people. Another of my macho ego trips was to use as few gears as possible. I'm trying to give that up. Yesterday, I went through many gears to keep my effort level low. It's hard to give up this egotistical habit.

:) i have discovered this is the key to remaining fresh while riding so i can do more and also just be kinder to my body. i also gain more ground/speed and do it in less time.

I had not even thought of that

Cajun is tempting but I went with the Sausage egg and cheese! The usual! :)

I have never tried a fast food drive-thru by bike. I always either lock up outside or take my bike inside and lean it up against a booth or something. If anyone says anything I'll say "well put a bike rack out there and I won't have to bring it in". Have been through my bank drive-thru many times, though.

So far this year I haven't seen 110 F yet on my ride home. Forgot to check yesterday so not counting it. Getting ready to leave and it is 114 F. Good thing it is less than 20 min.

txcrash 08-14-15 05:55 PM

Cmmute home was fantastic. A couple butthead drivers, but made good time and a decent average speed despite a head/cross wind the whole way. Have a couple segments of the route I'd like to breeze around, gotta explore that. Today was fairly cool (96), so enjoyed being able to push a little harder. One KOM, a PR, and a third best on the way home. All loaded with panniers and gear. Had a second best on the way out this morning. Yeah, I'm getting faster.

LoriRose 08-14-15 09:24 PM

Had a funny experience on the ride home tonight. I was stopped at a red beside some old dude in a nice car and he kept looking at me as if he wanted something. I ignored him but when the light turned green he drove along beside me still staring. His window was up but I asked loudly, "Can I help you?" He rolled down his window and started saying something but I couldn't hear him so I said as much. By this point he was holding up traffic and I felt like the ppl behind him probably thought I was the jerk. Turns out this probably 90 year old man, if not older, was merely asking me out for a drink. LMAO. I politely declined and let him know he was holding up traffic. Btw I'm 36.

Geese are some of the stupidest birds there are. Normally, birds have an excellent sense of trajectory, compared with mammals. They don't get hit by cars often. Roadkill is made up of mammals, not birds. Nearly the only roadkill birds I see are geese. They seem to have no sense of trajectory when they are on the ground.

Canada geese are not aggressive except during mating season (around March) and when the goslings are here. During mating season, they swoop low, and it doesn't happen often, but they could hit you in flight. When they have goslings, don't get near them, as they will charge you.

When they are blocking my way, I just slow way down and pass them slowly.

RidingMatthew 08-17-15 06:42 AM

I guess next time I will bring it I just think it will be difficult since they have two sets of doors.

I saw more recreational riders this morning than usual. Like 5. Usual is zero. I had to think to make sure it was Monday and not Sunday.

Normal ride otherwise.

Got home late last night from my daughters soccer tournament to find the A/C in the house wasn't working. :( So, after fiddling with it for an hour or so I finally got to bed around midnight (still with no A/C). I think (hope) the coils were just frozen over from all the humidity because I couldn't find anything else wrong with it. Left it off all night, and the system seemed to be working fine again this morning.

Anyway, slept late and had a nearly 2-hour late start for the commute this morning. Roads were definitely more crowded which wasn't much fun on certain sections. Otherwise not too bad.

bmthom.gis 08-17-15 09:19 AM

No riding in today, but I did bring 3 bikes to work with me. Wheelin' and Dealin' on CL. Just got a new C&V ride I have to pay for.

Last year a woman was badly attacked by some geese on the bike path, she just wanted to around them with her bike but she came between the mother and the young geese. She ended up with some bad scratch and cuts. They can be very very aggressive in those circumstances.

Fast commute today. Very fast. I was running late when I left the house but arrived to work early.

I had a great ride in this morning. I think my knee is feeling better and I was faster. (that or the 12lbs of air in the rear tire helped)
Took this picture over the lake

awesome commute this am. dead flat calm, sunny, cool.

I left the house late, but picked up the time and arrived on time. (Then had to wait for a free shower at work anyways.)

KCBikeCommuter frozen coils and/or lines means your refrigerant level is low. My system has a slow leak somewhere and it's been freezing once a year for the past 3 summers. I need to replace the whole system just don't have a way to pay for it yet. Even if it runs fine now, it will freeze up again soon. You'll need to get the system recharged.

As it happens, my unit froze up last night, which is surprising because the past 2 years it's always happened around May. I'm surprised I made it this far into the season, especially since it's been way hotter this year than last year.

Oh well, we have a couple of small window units in the house. I woke up on-time I guess from thinking about the AC, and went on to work. Felt pretty good riding, had one person in a pickup who didn't get all the way over the center line before passing. Oh well, not a huge deal I guess.

enigmaT120 08-17-15 12:54 PM

Dark! I'm back with my helmet and Blackburn Flea to supplement my generator hub headlight. I'm taking a long route home today, should be nice.

Darth Lefty 08-17-15 02:25 PM

Sitting out this week. It's hot and I'm hurt. We did get a tandem ride yesterday, which was fun. Need to change it to flat bar.
