Chilly 43 degrees F this morning. Got a late start and paid for it. First 4 miles were highway directly into the sunrise. I could barely see the road and by the close passes of cars I am pretty sure most didn't even see me. Bright yellow safety jacket with reflective strips and a blinking red light didn't appear to be enough. Moving up my start time to ensure I'm off this stretch before the sun comes up.

When the sun is exactly wrong on a stretch of road and you can't see in front of you, that scares me more than anything else I encounter. I'd rather turn off or stop and wait, if at all possible.
I hope everyone has good rides today. |
Temps were terrific this morning, I took care of my brake rub problem yesterday afternoon, but I felt like I was fighting myself this morning. Halfway in I realized there was a headwind (supposed to drop away this afternoon) and my calves kept wanting to cramp up. Slowed my pace and took the scenic route in along the riverfront MUP which turned out to be a great decision.

64 degrees and a wonderful level of humidity. It was a good ride this morning. Going to ride to a youth group pool party in another town. I am sure people will think I am crazy for riding from another town to the party but I think I can beat the Google time estimate!

It was a bit cooler this morning. A good pre-dawn ride in and I feel good this morning. I am so enjoying riding versus driving a car. It's much less stressful and I arrive home more relaxed in the evening. My wife notices, too.

This morning had that rare perfect range of temperature where you can keep up a normal effort yet still arrive cool enough to go right to work. I get a kick out of days like this because you'll see bike riders wearing everything from shorts and jersey like me to sweaters and jackets. The "old guys" were out, a group that I see from time to time who like to holler "on your left" to each other as I pass, after I "dinged" them and bid them good morning. A pleasant, cheerful bunch who I used to think were just beginners warning each other, but they've been at it long enough that it's a group convention of some sort. The older cranky walker (another regular) was also out, standing in his lane staring up at the trees as is his sometimes habit - he gets quite upset if any bicycle passes by without acknowledging him so I usually ding at him as well. I wondered how he and "the old guys" interact with each other, but circling back to eavesdrop would have been too weird.

Blah. Ride home was full of traffic. My usual route to get to the start of the bike lane seems to be shut down for the forseeable future, as student housing is being built (like our city needs more?) I mean, the Lil 'uns have to live somewhere, but that's a terrible intersection. Almost got clipped later on in the ride, and traffic in general is just crap with school back in session. I guess I need to adjust my ride times, bc with part of my route shut down it means I have to go over a busy, steep bridge that has no shoulder and lots of students paying minimal attention. I'm not a morning person. In other news, get off my lawn ya whippersnapper

Put on armwarmers for the first time since May.

First bike commute in a week and a half, staying dark a lot later now. I finally have a decent light, so I'm feeling more confident in the dark.
|
With school in session I think driver behavior, along my route at least, is better.
Sure, I have the intersection where the prep school has decided to put cones out to "take" one of the lanes for parents leaving the campus, but I go through those with no issue (it's on a busy road on a fairly steep but short grade... There's no way I'm taking the middle lane), but for the most part they're the same terrible drivers. Yesterday was the first with a helmet cam, driver response seemed favorable. No incidents to film, which is kind of the point. It's a bit heavy, but I think it's going to stay there (along with the flashing cygolite that I can point towards drivers that are acting like they don't see me... Flashing light plus hey, you're on candid camera... Winning. ) |
Haven't checked in for a while, I see some autumn-esque indicators in here. 64F / 18C coming in this a.m., coolest ride in a long time.

This morning was a very nice commute as the humidity has left and it was cool at 60f degrees.
I left work early yesterday due to some appointments I had. I was able to add miles to my commute home and the weather was awesome making the ride even that much more enjoyable. |
It was a perfect temp IMO this morning.. prefer 65-68 or higher. Not too cool starting out and and not to warm arriving. Seem to have a headwind both directions this week. Gears are hanging up a bit so have to address that this weekend. Still waiting on the doc to call me back about my breathing issues.. it's like a snow ball effecting my riding. Start out great the first of the week but by the end of the week I'm zonked.

Cool and low humidity again today. No complaints here.
I managed a slightly faster pace today than I have been the past couple of months. A speedy 16.5 mph, including stops. |
i wish that people would be safe and careful while driving.

I rode from work (19.7miles) to a youth group pool party. My daughter said one of her friends said, "someone just showed up on a bike!" My daughter said, "oh (nonchalantly) that is my dad!" Wife met me there with the bike rack and we drove home together. Google maps said it would take 1h37m but it only took me 1h16m.. How does Google calculate bike time? |
Extra-long commute yesterday as I went to a retirement party for a coworker at a local bar after work. That added about 3 miles to my afternoon commute, which was further intensified by a stiff headwind and the effects of two pints of ale. The ride home felt more difficult than it should, however, and my position felt wrong on the bike. So, I checked my saddle height after I got home, and sure enough, the bike shop had repositioned my saddle height while doing some routine service earlier this week. I should have been clued when the bike shop owner commented how nicely my bike rode. Nevertheless, I hate it when bike shops change your saddle height for test ride and then don't put it back in the original position. This has happened to me many times, and I generally don't realize it until I'm in the middle of a fairly long ride -- or afterwards when my legs are more sore than usual.

Starting earlier helped with the sunrise issue. Tired legs and little energy this morning so I just cruised along and enjoyed being out. Normally I commute 11+ miles each way 2-3 times a week. Today was my third consecutive ride in. Played 1 1/2 hours of hockey late last night and managed 5 hours of sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a bear.
Ride home as I was on my last couple of miles on the highway I had a car pass me slow and then pullover just past where a road joins the highway. This road a semi waiting to pullout but the driver sat seeing if that car would get out of his way. I was cautious but kept pedaling. The truck driver looked at me, back down the road to his left and then pulled out. Hit the brakes hard to keep from being in the pinch point between the car and this truck. Mid turn he looks back and laughs. He was driving a company truck. That company's corporate office got an email sent their way last night. Doubtful much will happen but I know the trucking company I work for would have a serious meeting between the driver and the HR/safety office. Pull out and give me an apologetic wave when you cut me off is something I can tolerate, pull out and laugh is something I don't tolerate well. |
Nice morning here. Mid-fifties but enough humidity to make it feel as if above 60. Pumped my tires up to 120PSI, cleaned and lubed the chain, and hit a windless road which resulted in a very quick ride, shaving 5 minutes off of my usual 1:10 time.

This whole week has been great for cycling here. Cool temps in the morning, warm but not hot in the afternoon, and hardly any wind. I so badly wish I could spend the whole day riding, but work and home life are much too busy these days.
My 6-year-old daughter learned to ride a bike this week. I've tried to teach her but didn't get anywhere, so my wife enrolled her in a bike camp and midway through the first day she's riding like a champ. Despite feeling like I've failed as a father, I'm just so durn proud of her! |
I had an interesting ride in this morning. I had to drop off my daughter at school, so I normally don’t ride on those days. However, I need to drive tomorrow because of an after work event, so decided to go ahead and ride in today. There were scattered thunderstorms around the area when I left home, but thought I would miss them based on radar. This was pretty much the case, but had a pop-up storm form above me when I was still about 6-miles from the office. I found an overhang to hide for about 15-min until the storm passed. I started toward work again, got another ½ mile down the road and my right SPD pedal broke!
Managed to go ahead and pedal the rest of the way in, but will stop by the bike shop on my way home to see about getting another set. http://i1057.photobucket.com/albums/...pshzlxjxpq.jpg |

First time posting to this thread.
I only rode to the grocery store and back this evening. Some ground beef we had bought had spoiled before its time. I replaced it with ground pork. Take that, beef. It's a great ride, 6 miles round trip and all trail, sidewalk, and parking lot riding so not much traffic and the weather right now is PHENOMENAL. I did take the bike to work with me yesterday and rode home (my wife needed the car). It was really nice but kind of chilly and breezy and I got a headache 10 minutes in (it's a little over an hour ride for me, 14 miles). The headache made it bad enough that late last night I decided I needed to make up for it so I took a quick trip downtown and around and back, another 14 miles or so.

Commuted by bike 3 days in a row - each and every day being absolutely gorgeous and at perfect temperatures, both morning and evening. I love being able to ride by the river, then cross it to go past a couple of monuments, and ride through the National Mall - all in the morning - and it's even better when it's 70 degrees and no perceivable humidity/dew point. I used to dread that final stretch to the office building - a 3-lane per direction street with fairly heavy motorist traffic, but when the morning ride is this nice, I just feel like a twig gently floating down a stream or something.
Cyclocross season must be coming up I guess. There was a group of cyclists riding on the grass in a sort of pace line, near the MUP I was riding on in the evening. They all nicely called their passes even though they had no intention of getting on the MUP, for the benefit of cyclists and peds alike on the MUP. I think the fatigue of riding 3 days in a row affected me mentally more than physically. Yes, my legs were a little more sore each day but on the 3rd day I managed to lose track of the pedals on the evening commute. I suppose this is a disadvantage of platform pedals, but I'm normally not this sloppy. Other than that, I was happy to be able to ride 3 days in a row in this fine weather. |
It was a very nice ride in today though a little chilly, 56f degrees when I left the house. I took a different way. I have never ridden some of the roads that I did this morning. New scenery is nice.
|
Coolest morning since May or so: 62F. Very enjoyable. I do wish I could just keep riding and not go to work. Maybe one of these days...
|
Nice chill in the air, fog blanketed the fields. The road was clear though, and there was absolutely no wind. Perfect.
