Was wondering what your commutes looks like on a chart. I don't care about speed, I'm curious to see the "frequency", is it flat or does it spike?

Here you see mine from todays ride home (from Endomondo):



The downs are caused by me stopping at a red light or other obstacles. Sadly the spikes are averaged out due the nature of GPS recording (rolling average?), which always has annoyed me.

The heart monitor contacts needs to be moist to work, I didn't lick the contacts this morning so it didn't start reading until I built up enough sweat to wet the contacts. And it should be noted, the temp was -10F and I was sweating after a mile.

I am not yet riding this route on my bike, but this is a plot generated by MapMyRide as driven in my car. The first is shorter (~5 mi.) because getting TO work has a deadline. The second will be the ride home to stretch it out a little (~8 mi.)





MapMyRide has determined that there are CL-5 climbs involved. I'm not an avid trainer or competitor so I had to look that up. I think their algorithm cheats me a bit, but I do know that it seems like its uphill both ways!

My iPhone Strava run is not the least bit accurate, it goes haywire at the Hazel bridge (about 4 mile mark) due to parallel bike paths and it's not too accurate on speed either, and it's got maybe +-5% error in distance from one to the next.

My ride to work this morning. Had a nice tailwind for the first 7 minutes or so, then I turned and it was a crosswind instead.

The Hazel bridge... The Jedidiah Smith aka American River Bike Trail crosses the river here. To the west it's on the south side of the river and to the east it's on the north side of Lake Natoma. The offshoot Lake Natoma trail continues east past the Sac State aquatic center on the south side. There are protected bike lanes on either side of the bridge and an underpass on either end of the bridge with little offramps as needed. You can see at some points there are six parallel bike routes. My route goes south along the northbound side of the bridge, giving Strava fits. You can see it's picked up two segments I'm not actually on.

Got my new Garmin Edge computer today and used it on the way home. Now my charts look a bit more detailed and a got a pleasant surprise to see stops at red lights in the chart more clearly compared to tracking on my smartphone.

You guys have much fancier equipment than I do...kudos. My cyclocomputer tells me I vary from 0 mph to about 32 mph, and everything in between, with some big hills and frequent windy days.
No charts here!

@t x: How many red lights/stops do you got? 3-4?

On that route, I believe 10 red lights and a couple stop signs at the beginning and end. It's short so some days I can ride the wave all the way home.
EDIT: About half the lights are relatively minor streets that are always green, the others are far enough apart to time easily if traffic isn't too weird.

Do some computers not have a print screen key? That will copy the screen to the clipboard. Control-print screen copies the current window.

On a smartphone like my shots above you press the side button and front button simultaneously.

That is awesome. My LBS had a di2 demo last week and the Shimano guy said, don't ride this if you're not ready to buy a new bike. I resisted for the most part, but played with a bike on the stand. Smooth, crisp shifting, AND you can play with the data later? Cool.

I have a NOAA Chart to Navigate on the Water *, but use street maps to navigate on land.
