Left to "Fend" for Myself...
 

Five hours, split over Saturday and Sunday, but I finally have my SKS Longboard fender on the front of my Charge Plug! Next weekend...the rear fender! What a struggle! As with any fender mounting there is a little give and take. The biggest problem was the front disk brake caliper. It was right in the way of the left fender braces. I tried bending, but it was too severe. What I needed was to shift the mount down. I had a black plastic reflector mount that did the trick. So I dodn't need to kink the braces so much. I may order another fender brace and try again later. Here are the photos to show what I did.

Next weekend I attack the back fender again...there are some clearance issues. The fat 700cx32 Kenda's that came with the bike are okay, but I I'd rather have a smooth road tire over the Kenda mini-nubs, and I think it is those nubs that are making the tire too big. There is a support across the rear frame that has a braze-on. I think that is the problem. I may drill a hole in the fenders and screw it there. The fender-hanger might work but there is no practical way to connect it to the frame there. I was going to buy smoother road tires when these wore out, but I may have to buy earlier, to get a fender to work.

As with all past bike related projects, I may skin some knuckles, I may break some components, I may end up paying twice as much in replacement parts, but I WILL PREVAIL.

What I did for the rack(similar issue) on mine was a couple nuts and a longer bolt. The nuts form enough of a standoff, not same size but larger bore, then the puts the arm out past the caliper widthwise but still in the same line it wanted to be. Make sure you use a good enough grade bolt that can take the leverage, but it shouldn't be a problem. My touring rack takes a lot of loads continuously and has never bent or broke the spaced mount.

When I was installing Planet Bike fenders on my MTB with disc brakes I had to make some custom extensions from a piece of steel to make everything fit. It was a HUGE PITA....ON my other bike with rim brakes I had no problems, the fenders went on fast and easy.

You didn't want to use the spacer that came with the fenders? That's what I did, took less 30 mins to install the fender:

I did see a coupe of long-ish bolts in the kit, but no spacers. BTW, nice ride!

Maybe that's why people prefer PB fenders although I'd swear my Longboards came with those spacers too. Thanks for the compliment, I really like the Saga.

Skinned knuckles? There's a 3-inch scar on my palm from when I open-fist punched a chainring after a tool slipped. That one hurt.

I've never had an issue just using longer bolts with spacers. This is about $3.50 in parts.
