This is only referring to the bicyclists who ride in groups that take up a full single lane in packs on a one way two lane road. You have every right in the world to be on the road, honestly, bicycling is a beautiful hobby, workout, way of life the road is to be shared.. I agree and ride daily. But when you decide to take up the entire lane doing 15-18 miles per hour on a 45 MPH road, impeding traffic, that you leave no way to go around, instead of sharing the road there will be Irate drivers. In the last year I responded to 3 cyclists hit by cars in S. Florida, Boca area. While one was unconscious in the middle of the lane, ( later died ) I blocked his body with my RMP, and as another pack of cyclists passed by, they called me every name in the book, while I was in full uniform, and asked me why didnt I get the F##k out of their lane, with my vehicle, light turrets all flashing.. I don't know if they were right or wrong, I was just responding to a call of a Bicyclist crash, but I do know my response now to cyclist hit is waaay slower than it used to be when I was a NYC Sgt. I am the most polite person you will probably ever meet, some say I am too nice to be a cop, but to those cyclist who get into that mob mentality, that they are above any rules, simply by virtue of sheer pack size, and then get into their parked BMW's at the beach rest areas, and still have that mentality, when pulling out, I say don't hold your breathe waiting for me, it may be your last, your decision made much earlier that day.. You behave like an animal you get treated like an animal. Sorry if I offended anyone, believe me after almost 28 yrs law enforcement, and 9/11 first responders on duty in uniform, and working for my step pop in A LBS NYC NY since roughly 10 yrs old, I am competent to handle anything. But, if you behave in a manner that you believe law does not pertain to you, expect others to treat you in the same regard. This in no way has any reflection on the ladies and gentleman who abide by traffic laws, commuting, enjoying a ride, etc and following the rules when some idiot in an SUV, and I do find young women on phones to be the biggest offender, I can't tell you how many times at night they were going to clubs talking texting, doing 75 MPH plus, in a 35 MPH zone on A1A, and when pulled over asked me to hurry and finish the ticket so their dad could pay it, they had to be SOMEWHERE, is more than common unfortunately. To those bicyclists who try to follow the rules, and some markers, cities, drivers make it almost impossible, I am your biggest proponent, I am the Officer you want to respond, because you deserve it. But to those in packs, blocking traffic simply because they can, by sheer size, as I said above.
That same measure of ignorance that tells you, there are 30 of us on bikes and only one vehicle waiting, is countered by the same wrong ignorance of that driver thinking he has 5000 pounds of vehicle that says otherwise. When those forces meet, usually a DOA signal 7 happens.
And as not to be negative, and leave this as just a rant with no positive advice, I add this. A little courtesy, a quick wave thanks, a small amount of friendliness, that thank you as someone in a vehicle waves you past, or when you yield for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, those little things are remembered, and add up to a split second decision on the actions of anyone involved in these dynamics. Just some courtesy, a wave hello, a driver at a traffic light commenting what a beautiful bike, or a rider, telling a driver what a beautiful auto. Those little differences are what make us civilized and possibly cause the biggest saving of precious life. LET THE FLAMING BEGIN

You missed my point, and/or I expressed myself poorly?

What I'm saying is the statistical differences are mostly a matter of perception to us as individuals, as the odds of our being seriously injured or killed are still low.

Perhaps I incorrectly interpreted that the topic your OP is our perceptions of danger, not actual incidents?

Wow. Because some cyclists ride in a certain manner, all cyclists deserve this treatment?

Pure unadulterated car head. I feel pity for your cognitive dissonance.

A little courtesy, a quick wave thanks, a small amount of friendliness
I stopped "waving", "smiling", kissing @#$, or giving a @#$% about the hypothetical "feelings" of cagers decades ago. And despite the fact that I flagrantly violate *THE LAW* just about every trip, no one complains, no one yells, and no LEOs harass me.

spare_wheel No need to feel pity for me. I am not asking for it, If the time in my life ever comes that I need the pity of a anyone, then that is the day my life should end. Feel pity for the bicyclist who lays in the middle of the road bleeding out, while packs of other cyclist pass by telling me to fu@k myself while blocking the struck bicyclist from getting run over again. And please, your ignorance is not hid by your availability of a synonym validate, it does not make you appear any more intelligent, just like a little boy wearing his mommy's under garment clothes. Go back to China on your Chinese bike, and spout your redirect ignorance there, see how tolerant they are of your opinion. This is the greatest Country in the world, even with it's problems, that is why vacuous populace like yourself can have the great freedom to pass judgement on others. See, ignoramus, anyone can use a synonym guide for their insinuations. Stupid

Can you please provide the reference/source for this quantitative statement about relative dangers of driving and bicycling in Europe and the U.S?

You don't need any help in proving, self promoting, your stupidity, do you? You are doing a great job on your own, better than in fact I can do. You are saying, you break the law flagrantly, you are discourteous, you are to blind to see any
compliant, to deaf to hear anyone else's opposition, opinion, and I'm sure to cowardly to violate the law flagrantly in the presence of LEO's. You are the exact definition of a loser, so please as you insulted me first, let me call you a failure to your face. I tried looking up a synonym for a better definition to use, but really " STUPID " becomes you, it is so fitting.
Your inherent selfishness, and purposeful hinderance to all those who promote good conduct, and try to at least follow the some semblance of rules, is beyond ignorance. You, little girl, simply are a stupid loser, really that is the best definition simple as it is, I can find for you. Go find your synonym resource, and continue your little girl who wet her panties retort.

Driving fatalities are easily available via google. Here are two references on bicycling safety:

Bicycling: Relatively Safe | streets.mn

Safety in Numbers: Biking Is Safest in Nations With the Most People on Bikes | Streetsblog USA (Note the chart at the beginning)

Katie - thanks for posting this; Seems to explain some things. While I disagree with your heavy-handedness, at least I have better insight of the environment you inhabit, which is completely foreign not me. We do need to hear from folks in your position (cyclist and community service) to better understand how cyclists behave to non-cyclists.

I wish there was less animosity that is starting to show in this thread though. No need for it.

spare_wheel, If there is not going to be anymore intelligence that your replies so promote, like calling me a " car head " how old are you, 6 or seven??, I will leave now and go do more important things than converse with you, I don't know, like maybe cutting one finger nail, or re-wrapping the toilet paper role. Something important in that area, as you are not supplying anymore ammunition, and I don't want to seem like I am insulting the challenged or any other group but you

RoadTire I sincerely thank you for your response. I am truly a good person, I would step in front of a train if need be, believe me I would, to help someone. But, unfortunately I learned you really can't change these silly peoples mind in just a conversation. So why not have a little fun with it. This person, if they actually break the law, is not even smart enough to do it without admission in writing. I could only imagine the intelligence level there. Anyway, I am a great Bicycle proponent, I have worked for the Schwinn team in Manhattan in the early eighties, I taught the Schwinn certification shop in Edison NJ, for a few years before they went Bankrupt, as a NYC cop and now Florida, always always tried to promote safe bicycling. It is not pretty seeing a young kid ( the truly innocent things in this world ) hurt or crying for their parents after an accident. the scared look and afraid feelings they have after they thought they did something wrong by causing the( Accident in NYC ) ( Crash in Florida ). My step dad ( adopted ) still owns Franks Bike Shop NYC NY ( Frank ) and their are few things I love more than bicycles. If Ioffended anyone else besides spare wheel, I sincerely apologize. To them I am sorry.

You've not offended me (nor likely others) but the maturity exemplified in your posts have been a good example of why people have so little regard for LE in the U.S.

i predicted that your response would be to double down on your bigoted views:

hobby, workout, way of life
