Reality Check

Since the forum is being used to promote fraudulent claims and disinformation about SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19 (the disease caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2), and the pandemic restrictions, as an antidote, here is a link to the BBC's "Reality Check" :

Conspiracy theories are just a bunch of harmless nonsense, I don't see any good reason why social media platforms would ban them. Instead of banning them, challenge them and debate their theories.

Sure. When my kid's 77 year old grandma says the whole thing is a hoax and we need to get the economy open things are working great.

We checked our reality in back in early February as I recall. I'm guessing in about a year we will find the claim ticket.

It really seems there are only a couple of prolific posters here who have abandoned rational thought in favor of their politics. If you want to see an abundance of willful ignorance, check out the Covid posts on an RV forum.

Unfortunately, not all of them are equally harmless.

Especially when the believers are heavily-armed, and/or infected, or were "elected" president.

Former Coronavirus Skeptic Warns Others To Take Pandemic Seriously After Infection

https://www.yahoo.com/huffpost/flori...001955197.html

“Please listen to the authorities and heed the advice of the experts,” he implored people in his Facebook post. “Looking back I should have wore a mask in the beginning but I didn’t and perhaps I’m paying the price for it now.”

I don't think perhaps, he is paying for it.

At CoV-Skeptic: The mask is to help prevent spreading it. It's heartwarming he still thinks it is all about him.

This is like censorship by noise. Humans are so good at figuring things out, we can communicate on a level that could never be imagined before, and it's making us dumber.

Population density.

Potentially a more virulant strain of virus (we do know it is different from the West Coast one, and came via Europe).

Density makes sense. I would want to see some more evidence re: virulence of virus.

Manila Philippines has one of the most densely populated regions of the planet, and has recorded 573 deaths. Not that I necessarily believe their numbers, but if bodies are piling up in the streets the media would notice.

I'm not in any way a coronavirus skeptic or anything of that ilk, but I am really curious about why it spreads in some localities and not others.

Like I said before, an engaging and compelling documentary. Well worth watching.

I don't think anyone really knows the significance of these two different viral strains. But it is really puzzling why some places seem to get absolutely hammered.

I think it is a combination of opportunities and chance. The cities that were hit later had the experience of NY to draw on and could be on guard to shut down quickly if the virus was detected. Some did and did not get hammered too hard. Still, a lot of this is random. I heard one expert compare this to war. The simplistic example I think of is a grenade being tossed into a house full of armed revels. It could roll down the stairs and go off in the empty basement doing little damage or roll into the closet with all the ammunition.

News media are heavily censored in the Philippines, backed by an autocratic leader who has sanctioned extrajudicial killings of people accused of dealing or using drugs -- including reports that the police have expanded these murders to silence critics of Duterte, then fabricating evidence that the assassinated critics were "drug dealers." I wouldn't trust any statistics or the absence of reports of deaths as evidence of how they're handling the pandemic.

In addition, the Duterte government floods social media with paid media watchdogs (ie, trolls) to dominate every independent news media story that even vaguely concerns the Philippines. They overwhelm every post with comments that are probably using multiple sockpuppets to give the illusion of consensus. But that's not new. The US, Russia and other countries have done the same thing.

So I'd also be skeptical of comments from purported citizens claiming to be independent observers.

As with the US itself, it'll be years before we know the full story of how the pandemic affected some nations, and how well or poorly they responded. History won't be kind to us either.

I'm under no illusions about the veracity of the Philippine press or the honesty of the Duterte government. Still , if there was a death toll similar to New York, we would know about it, and it does not seem to be the case. At least not yet.

In Wuhan, back in January and February, it was obvious something was going on, although the Chinese state media was trying to minimize it. Bodies were piling up on the street, people were dying, we didnt know, and probably never will know, the full picture, but something was amiss.

All I am saying is that in one of the densest cities in the world, Manila, we are not seeing the same kind of carnage as New York. Why? Is it the virulence of the virus, as suggested by wgscott? It could be.
