My SO has had a prescription for migraines (very real and bad) for years. We grew our first allotment of legit plants last year and netted 20 oz. As she's healthy as a horse!!!

It doesn't seem like smoking anything is going to help with a respiratory illness.

A related tangent (story from NYT today)

A Hidden Origin Story of the CBD Craze

The cure-all debate over the cannabis compound has distracted from the serious — and seriously odd — back story of how cannabidiol conquered the country.

Preprints isn't peer reviewed and their standards for publishing and reader comments appear to be non-existent.

Hey, I'm hopeful for yet another justification for cannabis. I use CBD and it works pretty well for moderate pain. If it's good for other stuff, fine. There's still a lot of disagreement over the balance between CBD and THC, amounts of each type, and how to estimate dosages from a lightly regulated product that varies so much between strains.

I suspect the Preprints paper, published by Canadian researchers, is shilling for the Canadian cannabis industry, which turned out to be less profitable than expected. Same problems many US growers have faced. Some growers were stuck with surplus they couldn't sell and couldn't afford to store properly.

Part of the problem is the hodge podge of inconsistent laws regarding CBD vs THC, medical marijuana vs recreational, etc. If they simply deregulated it completely the market would sort itself out. I'm sure there are buyers for inexpensive surplus cannabis. It won't keep forever and there's always next year, next harvest. But it's too expensive to process it into CBD for an uncertain market, where prices are dropping quickly as the novelty fades and people are unwilling to pay $100 or more for a few ounces of odd smelling and tasting oil.

Something similar happened with kratom, another herbal product I use for more severe pain. Last autumn an Indonesian doctor who appeared to have valid credentials published a non-peer-reviewed article claiming kratom had anti-viral properties. Some kratom vendors reprinted that in March just as the pandemic scare was finally reaching the US. But they didn't push the claim beyond March. I suspect they discovered, as I did after a few hours of reading online, that the doctor had no supporting material and was probably shilling for the kratom industry, most of which comes from Indonesia. It's a fine alternative product, very helpful for informed folks. I doubt it has any special anti-viral properties. I hope I'm wrong and it actually is some sort of wonder drug. But I'll wait for evidence.

Look folks I am going to be blunt about this just because every Tom, Dick and Mary Jane comes up with a new supposed cure and rings the bell "bong bong" to alert the townsfolk doesn't mean we have found the pot at the end of the rainbow. We cannot all just get on the cannabus thinking it will smoke out the nasty virus. We need to get at least 420 peer reviewed studies to hash this info out or it will be all up in smoke. If it does work we have to Cheech everyone about it but if it is not going to work it will just spread more misinformation in this joint and clog up our pipes.

Welp, a friend read those same reports claiming cannabis was good for preventing COVID-19 and other stuff, so he gave me some. First time I'd tried any in nearly 50 years. I'm retired now so... what the heck.

I heard some claims that smoking cannabis actually has some beneficial properties for asthmatics. Can't say it worked for me. But I already have chronic upper respiratory inflammation. Just gave me a sore throat and sinus pain. Won't be smoking again. I'll stick with steroid inhalers for the asthma and sinus inflammation. The sensation from a couple of puffs was mild and slightly stimulating, about like espresso with a shot of rum.

Baking with it is tricky. One batch had no discernible effect. Next batch... couch lock. Couldn't even finish watching a movie before I dozed off. Haven't found the right balance yet.

It's not bad. Can't say I'm fond enough of it to continue after this sample. About the same I felt about it when I was a teenager. It was oh-kay but never my favorite recreational pursuit.

CBD works pretty well for me with no side effects. Ditto, kratom, which is basically like a cup of coffee with pretty good pain relief. No real psychoactive properties so I can ride my bike or do whatever needs doing. I've gotten boring with age. I don't even like drinking beer or wine anymore. I'd rather just ride my bike.

But, hey, I still don't have COVID-19. So it must work, right? That's how internet logic works.

My cousin thinks it works for everything. My doctor is dead against it, especially for older people, she claims there is good evidence for psychological problems in over 60s who use it. I have not looked at her evidence.
Another friend makes her own CBD gummies for chronic pain relief, she has bad hips.
I will just avoid it for now, and await the medical evidence.
