Scientists warn of potential wave of COVID-linked brain damage

Scientists warned on Wednesday of a potential wave of coronavirus-related brain damage as new evidence suggested COVID-19 can lead to severe neurological complications, including inflammation, psychosis and delirium.

“Whether we will see an epidemic on a large scale of brain damage linked to the pandemic – perhaps similar to the encephalitis lethargica outbreak in the 1920s and 1930s after the 1918 influenza pandemic – remains to be seen,” said Michael Zandi, from UCL’s Institute of Neurology, who co-led the study.

“My worry is that we have millions of people with COVID-19 now. And if in a year’s time we have 10 million recovered people, and those people have cognitive deficits ... then that’s going to affect their ability to work and their ability to go about activities of daily living,” Adrian Owen, a neuroscientist at Western University in Canada, told Reuters in an interview.

...OTOH, we'll finally have a logical explanation for what's happening in the news.

Yup. It is a cardiovascular/clotting disease, too.

The worst part is people are having this happen even after they successfully clear the virus.

Doctors may be missing signs of serious and potentially fatal brain disorders triggered by coronavirus, as they emerge in mildly affected or recovering patients, scientists have warned.

Neurologists are on Wednesday publishing details of more than 40 UK Covid-19 patients whose complications ranged from brain inflammation and delirium to nerve damage and stroke. In some cases, the neurological problem was the patient’s first and main symptom.

...so maybe, in your other thread, this goes all the way back to 2016 ? That would explain so much.

So, if I read this right and I put on my thinking hat, I get - when enough of us have been through this disease, we will have our intelligence reduced in sufficient numbers that we can all agree this is just a hoax, at which point it goes away. Pretty simple, We just go on about our lives and everything works out (and finally, our whole country will be on the same page).

And by that time, I will have misplaced my thinking hat and will have to go to the attic and retrieve my dunce cap.

...pretty much. They were a little vague in the background story for the movie Idiocracy. This fills in the blank spaces in future history.

Coronavirus cognitive decline is already so virulent it affects some people just thinking about it. The covidementia seems to affect folks on both the far right and left equally.

I have friends in health care and I can't believe some of the stuff they're promoting, ranging from the now-discredited hydroxychloroquine and (insert supplement here) to steroid inhalers. Zero evidence, just anecdotes from a couple of family practitioners who moonlight as doctors while playing political punditry on YouTube. I suppose that's the risk when people seek jobs in health care because "they care" or "it's their ministry" rather than for the science and sound medical discipline.

Others still swear it's a hoax or weaponized biological agent. And they can't/won't wear masks because if it doesn't protect themselves 110% it's worthless, and besides somethingsomething oxygen deprivation, carbon fiber concentration, re-inhaling toxins, the Deep State and freedom.

Even the folks who believe it's real and agree with the medically valid precautions still get the data wrong. They refuse to acknowledge that the main reason so many people are anxious to return to normal life is because, statistically, COVID-19 is relatively less risky to kids and young adults. They're terrified of the impending economic collapse.

When I point out the vast majority of deaths are among folks age 70 and older, the ninnies will cite one case about one kid who died of COVID-19, failing to mention the kid had serious comorbidities like cancer. Or the fact that a seemingly healthy actor died at age 41 doesn't equally statistically significant data. As of this moment there's no data indicating that most apparently healthy 41 year old men are likely to die from COVID-19.

Yeah, I get it, the kids returning to school and young adults returning to normal life can endanger those of us who are older and have other health issues. And it's pretty clear the government and many younger Americans don't care. So it's up to us to take responsibility for our own health. I don't like it either but that's the way it is.
