It's pretty simple really and I'm sure you understand. Vaccines work (if they work) on the principle that once you've had a natural infection and survived a disease then you have developed "immunity". The principle of vaccines is that they are supposed to give you immunity without the risks of having to have the actual disease. If there is no natural immunity to the disease after having it once (pretty much like the common Cold) then vaccines just don't work. There's no vaccine for the Common Cold is there? Now I'm sure that many will argue that just one article doesn't confirm this to be true (and I agree with this position) but aren't you worried none the less? Are there too many eggs in the "Vaccine" basket? Is anyone studying the so called "Super Spreaders" to figure out just what makes them protected from the virus even though they carry it? Its not like they have been vaccinated. |
Your question was the point of the thread. How is that not addressing it?
If in fact it isn't possible to make an effective straightforward vaccine, there are alternative approaches. I suggested one idea, and the development of potent anti-viral drugs will become even more important. I think you are making too many assumptions about super-spreaders. |
Well ... this is depressing ... particularly in that it has implications not only for herd immunity but for a vaccine (something CNN did not mention, but the referenced paper did).

My dog has to get a kennel cough vaccine every 6 months. It won't be the end of the world. Anything will be an improvement from the current hell-disaster.
The other thing is neutralizing antibodies can pretty much disappear but the memory cells may still exist long-term, so it does not necessarily mean long-term immunity is impossible. It does look like it won't be an easy fix. |

No worries, I won't lose any sleep if this board doesn't exist anymore, or we just get banned! Cheers! https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ee88e46767.jpg |

...the good news here is that if you die the first time, you can't catch it again. :) |

It does look like it won't be an easy fix. I was a lot more optimisitic about our response to the pandemic back when it began. By this time, I envisioned a lot of testing, some new insights gained from that testing to help us cope. I envisioned a reality of an "army" of contact tracers that would (1) help identify transmission means and (2) help keep brush fires of infection down. I envisioned new systems that would allow us to work an interact in at least primitive virtual reality so that schools and the like wouldn't be too badly harmed. None of which has apparently happened. I envisioned people responding to a common enemy the way they usually do ... coming together to solve a bigger problem. You know how that turned out. I still have hope in the scientists. I just hope they are listened to. So far, not so good. |
Well this is encouraging ... vaccine progress:
