That is why I’m doing what I can not to catch covid in the first place Mr. Woolery. Was he on Card Sharks? Back in the 70s I watched game shows with my grandma
if she was alive she would say Woolery is a D-Nozzle. RIP grandma I miss you’re food
But seriously that is a good article thanks for sharing.

Maybe now we can close that infernal "herd immunity" thread.
I won't miss the thread, though I wish the circumstances of its obsolescence were different.

Yup, like the librarian on the Twilight Zone where he was obsolete
. The thread could become a herd of cattle or a flock of seagulls

It is too early to say whether people who have had it are less likely to catch it. See for example this commentary here https://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2020/07/wh...9-reinfection/
But it appears that it's POSSIBLE to get it a second time. Maybe it won't be common. Let's hope.
But it puts herd immunity further away. What's that I hear about a Russian vaccine?

Here are some notes about adverse reactions to a second dose of Moderna's COVID vaccine.
The experimental subject apparently had a strong titre to the first dose, which caused a severe reaction to the second dose.
There have been questions what was worse, the virus, or the immune response. Obviously one needs the immune response, but an overreaction could also cause significant damage (thus using steroids to reduce inflammation).

If they can get this to work, the next step might be a self-replicating mRNA vaccine. Which would be cool because SARS-CoV-2 is a self-replicating mRNA virus. Fight fire with fire!

So, the immunity associated with these herds is that, after the herd is decimated by the disease, those animals (and vegetables - most herds being veggie munchers) that are prey to now have immunity to that (now defunct) herd? I think we should probably start questioning what we are asking for.
The animal (and much of the plant) kingdoms would love to see immunity from the herd that is us.

Here is a list of different vaccine approaches being tried.
.
- Live attenuated viruses, somewhat like the OPV virus. Aparently in research phase, but not trials yet.
- Inactivated virus (no self replication when ultimately used).
- Splicing the RNA/DNA to make the spike protein into a "harmless" virus, and having it exhibit the protein in the human body. The virus can either be "replicating", or modified to not replicate in vivo.
- Isolating and injecting just the Spike protein.
Anyway, "self replicating" isn't that far fetched.

Sounds like biology class in Kollage with 300 other people to get the science requirement. Not knocking on anybody but are you all in the profession of viruses and disease. Or are you a medical doctor? Now don’t get all crazy if you have a good background in the subject but don’t practice it as a profession
If you are qualified then cool. I am listening to everything you guys are saying.

Wife's a virologist. I'm mainly an RNA guy, but my focus has been on structures of RNA elements in viruses and self-replicating RNAs.
This is one we did from SARS-CoV-1, which we solved to 2.7Å resolution. The SARS-CoV-2 s2m structure is nearly identical. Now we are using it for (drug) target practice. We should have started working on it then (2005), but SARS disappeared like a wet fart in the wind, and there was little in the way of funding.
Well, now it's back...

I'm a physical scientist. No particular expertise in biology or medicine, but I can read a peer-reviewed paper and understand the statistics. You won't find me getting into the guts of this in the same way as wgscott.

On that wattage thing, sorry, I've gone energy efficient. That's now down to 8. (Don't believe me? Should have seen me yesterday try to climb the local mountain.)

Yup, Common Sense would be a great virus to catch. Unfortunately I took a defensive driving course a few years ago and well I’m trying to be nice. The general public is dumber than a stump.
The answer is written into the question! That day I realized going beyond HS wasn’t a waste of time. Though I went to Kollage. But I can’t tear down and rebuild and engine. Be careful because people have different talents. And that is cool
and my grammar sucks canal water because of spell check

There isn't much to tell! (this is the only $hitshow in Shanghai at the moment)
Its pretty much business as usual, you have to wear a mask on public trans, and in places like costco.
I'd love to venture out of Shanghai, the problem is, its still possible to be tagged for quarantine based on travel history.

Well Scientists. The question that no one wants to ask is this, If it is true that you can catch COVID-19 twice in a few months and there is no herd immunity, isn't this the end of Vaccines as an answer to COVID-19?
