...to have suffered a severe, sustained outbreak for more than four months: the United States. (Good visuals and graphics.)

Who can forget when Dan Patrick said, "There are more important things than living."

...so true, such depth, so profound. Yet the Lt Governor of Texas was pilloried by the libs for speaking truth to virus.

Meh, old and sick people. They would have died anyway.

And yes, I am being facetious. I don't think people understand how bad of a situation we are in. The fall/winter is going to be REALY bad - especially if students (K through college) go to face-face learning. All our eggs are in the vaccine basket now...

It's hard to believe how incredibly incompetent the administration's response has been to the pandemic. The President's Axios interview was a trainwreck. He had a bunch of colored charts in his hands he did not understand. He likes his intelligence briefings filled with pictures because he doesn't like to read.

We have a lot of chubby people in this country. Interesting piece on just how much obesity factors into how one deals with covid. I understand, still a lot more research is needed, but no doubt, dropping weight and putting on muscle can only be beneficial, in so many ways.

Meanwhile, our kids can have dancing at their school formals (proms). I had beers in a bar (and have been able to for weeks). Things are almost normal, only thing is no dancing in nightclubs, just in case a yoof brings some covid in after the 2 weeks hotel quarantine to get into the state. Haven't had community transmission for months. Being on an island off an island at the end of the road (next stop is Antarctica) is handy sometimes.

So we find out yesterday that the leader of the US knew the virus was deadly and contagious via air transmission. And no real discussion of how to avoid the pandemic which is easy to do. I have a friend in Korea who sent me two boxes of surgical masks two months ago indicating that other countries knew how to keep this viral spread down. Colossal failure of leadership! (And it is just my opinion, but what do I know?) MH

He didn't want the sharemarket to panic! Like the sharemarket is the economy, rather than some gambling thingo where some rich people try to make money off other rich people who got it from banks that created it out of thin air.

I guess the COVID 19 forum is now the new P&R forum? But to play the game, one country among affluent countries has the largest number of obese and diabetic people, and more than 90% of COVID 19 fatalities in this country were among people who had 2 or more life-threatening preexisting conditions. America has been the fattest and most diabetic country in the world for many years, who do we blame for this? We should blame ourselves, no one holds a gun to our heads and makes us order a Double Gulp, two Big Bite hot dogs, and perhaps a burrito to go along with it. No one forces us to drive our cars to places we could walk to in 5 minutes. No one forces us to sit in front of computer screens or televisions for hours each day instead of being more active. But of course we cannot blame people for being personally irresponsible while the Orange One is sitting in the White House.

In case no one is aware, this one country among affluent countries has spent more per person to fight COVID 19 than any other country, vastly more. Even before COVID 19, this country spent more per person on healthcare than any other country in the world. It is not a lack of money which is the problem. The problem is that little of that money is spent on treatment, too much goes to law firms, insurance companies, corporate executives, and the politically-connected. The Orange One cannot direct how this money is spent, he signs the checks, the checks are cashed at the state level, yet no one blames those that actually spend the money for looting- I mean losing most of it.

But this is nothing new. This country spends more on education and infrastructure than any other country in the world, and most of the money vanishes before it reaches classrooms or highways. It has been this way for decades.

You can try to blame Trump for the severity of the crisis, but in doing so, you are supporting those who are the real villains, which can only make things works.

Nah, looking in from the outside, it's been all about leadership. Yes, your medical system is a giant money making scheme sucking the life out of the country, and that it is the populations fault for punishing any politician who dares to actually drain the swamp. But seriously, comparisons to the Flu, it'll go away by itself etc etc just gave the morons and uneducated social licence to continue being morons and uneducated, and actually turned that into a political statement.
Australia also has pretty high rates of obesity and diabetes. But our leaders got on board pretty early with saying "this is serious, take it seriously, do the right thing" and when new guidelines came out from WHO, generally adopted them pretty quick. Our prime minister, being of the Prosperity religious persuasion is still a little bit out of step with his "open up state borders so business can make money" and that is being reflected in his waning popularity.
What will be interesting is when the general population realise that even a mild case of Covid can have long term implications for circulatory health so letting it spread, even amongst healthy people isn't a good idea.

50 Plus,
Remember I said it was an Opinion (and an observation in part as well). I spent today with my dental hygenist, who had a young person come in with a high fever claiming he felt fine. She says when he opened his mouth after she had donned the PPE, she noted marks on his throat that looked like an EKG readout. She shared with a few ER physicians and none had seen that, but then none of them ever did an intubation because a technician does it for them. Our specialization has likely created a few missed symptoms in patients, which my be ways for diagnosis. Again just another stoopid Opinion. Smiles, MH

Nah, that would be an insult to the 1980s surf-punk band from Southern California.

And they are still active and touring!

Hundreds of people turned out for an anti-mask protest in Utah. It's being mocked as 'a straight parody' on social media.

A protester at the march, per The Spectrum, part of the USA TODAY Network, said during a closing prayer that "safety is not as important as our freedom and liberty."

Have you seen this NPR story from south of the border? Excerpts below.

"Picture this: You're 17, you walk into a corner store and grab a Coca-Cola and Doritos, but the cashier refuses to sell them to you because you're underage."

"That rule is expected to soon become reality in parts of Mexico, as lawmakers in several states push legislation to keep junk food away from children, partly in response to the coronavirus pandemic."

"More than 70,000 Mexicans have died from COVID-19, the world's fourth-highest recorded death toll, according to tracking by Johns Hopkins University. Two-thirds of those who died in Mexico had an underlying medical condition such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular problems, according to Health Department officials. That has led to a new urgency to change diets so that the younger generation doesn't suffer those ailments."
