I'm using my crosscheck as a commuter/ all arounder. I've got it set up with avocet 28's and like them very much, but would like to start doing some trail riding ( fire roadish, not too tech) and also commute my 15 miles round trip. I'd like to get some kinda tread, but don't want to spend an arm and a leg. My local LBC was suggesting these 44cm wilderness trail bikes tires.. they look cool, very aggressive, but I'm thinking I could split the difference a bit more and have something a little narrower but still aggressive enough to do what I hope.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated... I'd like to not spend TOO much. Like 30 bucks per tire maybe?

Bontrager Jones 32. Came stock on my poprad, and have worn farily well. They still have lots of tread on them despite the mainly road use they see, they roll nicely on the road, and they grip well in the dirty stuff when the need to explore arises. I can always swap the front / rear when the treads start wearing too much. They should run you under $30 easily.

I've been using the stock 32 Ritchey Speedmax Cross tires that came with the complete Cross Check for commuting. I use packed sand/dirt trail for a few miles of my ride, and they handle that and the road very nicely. Of course, I'm not very picky: I don't worry too much about rolling resistance and such. Also, I've gotten lots of flats, but that could be eliminated with a liner.

Looks like beyondbikes.com has the Kevlar beaded (foldable) type for $20.00.
