Pedal Suggestion? Eggbeater?

Hello all - I recently built up my first CX/gravel bike and wanted to get opinions on the original Crank Brothers Eggbeater pedals. I have a NOS pair that I can easily throw on, but don't want to unbox/try them if they won't be recommended. Have the new Eggbeaters improved so much over the years to warrant just buying the newest model, or is there an entirely different pedal that'd be most recommended?

I will not be racing, but would just like a simple and reliable pedal with good power transfer. For what it's worth, I'll be using Giro Empire MTB shoes. See bike and pedals below.

(shown with Speedplay for road/dirt)

Thanks!

If you want reliable don't use Eggbeaters. Specially old Eggbeaters. Shimano SPD are the ones to get if you want a durable pedal.

I use Time ATAC and they are very durable too but way more expensive than Shimano.

Much appreciated!

What are the issues with the Eggbeaters (especially old ones) that you speak of?

Eggbeaters aren't known for there great reliability but you already have them so you might as well use them. I'm a Time guy.

I have to agree with @10 Wheels about the extra support being great. I have the Candys rather than the Mallets but the extra support of the bigger surface area I wonderful. IMO the larger platform makes up for the slightly more flexible shoes of my MTB shoes.

When I had my CX bikes I had Eggbeaters. Never had a problem.

I agree with canker, if you have them, might as well use them.

I went SPD and have no regrets...reliable, easy to snap in and adjust tension, and ubiquitous. That last one is nice, plenty of different pedals available with a variety of configurations from many manufacturers at low price points if your buying for several different bikes.

You've got the pedals, bolt 'em on and go ride. Most of the issues with the 'beaters were from pedal strikes off road. That won't be a problem. They certainly don't suck or anything.

I really like the ATAC and the old Aliums were a bargain.

Shimano SPDs just work, but not fancy, and don't cost a lot.

But, you've got those so might as well ride them.

Shimano M540 if you are not happy with the egg beaters. Good quality and moderate price.

Thank you all for your input so far!

One thing I noticed when unboxing the original Eggbeaters is that the rotational resistance of the spindle is much higher than on any other bike I own...some as old as WWI-era. It has definitely added to my doubts about these pedals. Would be curious to test them side-by-side with the current Eggbeater models.

Let me put it this way, I saw someone riding on a spindle -he said pedal fell off three miles from the trailhead- today. He had Eggbeaters. It isn't the first time I've seen that. Or the second...

I have crank brother eggbeaters 3 on both my bikes. My CX bike has nearly 4,000 miles without a single issue with the pedals.

I just switched this year from eggbeaters to SPD pedals. I used the CX bike for racing in the Fall and Winter and wet weather commuting for a few years before switching. Had two problems with the eggbeaters. The cleat wears down fast and I was replacing them every couple of months. I was pretty careful to limit my walking but when I commute have a short walk from where I store my bike to the locker room.

Second problem was i cracked a shoe in half right where the cleat attached. Don't know if it was cleat or shoe problem.

I switched to SPD pedals that have a small platform. Will see how those work this fall out on the race course.

That resistance is probably because there is actual grease in the bearings. That's a good thing. How much a pedal bearing spins with no load on it tells you nothing about resistance under load. As long as it rotates smoothly and doesn't feel gritty, it's fine.

I would echo what everyone is telling you about pedals. If you were just buying new, I would say SPD, no question. But you've got the Eggbeaters already, so just throw them on and ride the crap out of them.
